When it was first discovered, I was among those that believed nothing from Titanic should have been preserved. In the late 90's, I went to the Titanic exhibit in Las Vegas (then at the Rio). Seeing those artifacts changed my attitude completely. It made Titanic 'real' and created a strong personal connection to the tragedy and the victims. That experience changed my view completely.

Shortly after the sinking numerous ships from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland went to the site to recover the deceased, (many of whom are buried in Halifax NS). As the crews were working out there, numerous bits of wreckage were picked up, practicality being a part of life, things like furniture or wood panels became parts of their homes. As time has passed, many of these items, as well as personal items from the unidentified or unclaimed bodies have found their way to the Maritime Museum in Halifax. Seeing their collection made the Titanic story and that of her passengers and crew real, relevant and meaningful. I support responsible recovery and conservation efforts for the Titanic.

I somehow didn’t know the RMST Orlando exhibition had the smaller portion of the big piece. We live close enough to the exhibition that we drove there, and upon arrival I had to use the restroom (it’s a part of the story.) One of the employees in the souvenir shop directed me to the door in the back, which lead out into the exhibit and the bathrooms down that same hall. I walked through this door and took maybe 10 or so steps and there it was on my right. The smaller big piece of Titanic. I was finally seeing a fragment of the very same ship that has captured my imagination since I was 7 years old. Full body chills, even now writing this. It took my breath away, and to non Titanic people that would probably seem so silly because to them that would sound so needlessly dramatic, but I think my fellow Titanic folks would understand how I was feeling in that moment. That was an extremely powerful experience, one I will carry with me forever.

the 78rpm shellac records could be a goldmine. they were often made in very low numbers, let's say 1,000 or even lower. imagine if they found a new song from one of them, crazy! they are very fragile so saving them would be a real challenge. i'd say they should build a hard case with slots (soft inside) for each record or something like that. a bag would destroy them. the records in the picture look like 12", not 10". i think they weight around 250g each.

they already had, at least some of them: "The central newel post at the base of the staircase had a bronze cherub holding an illuminated torch. Smaller replica cherubs likely graced either end of the B and C-Deck levels. The base of the cherub that once graced the forward A deck landing has been recovered, as has one of the smaller cherubs that stood on the flanking newel posts of the aft staircase on C deck."

I clearly remember the world-wide media sensation when Dr. Ballard discovered the Titanic (yes - I'm that old). Before that, I had never given Titanic a second thought. But when I got Ballard's book as a gift one Christmas - it completely engrossed me and has ever since. In the beginning, and for many years after, I agreed with Ballard's notion that nothing should ever be removed from the wreck or even debris field. However, in more recent years, as the wreck's progressive deterioration has become more and more apparent, I flipped on that. I visited a traveling Titanic exhibit and was permitted to touch a giant section of steel hull plate that had been raised. That, along with seeing actual Titanic dinnerware, cookware and other artifacts, I was overcome with emotion. I realized then that the best way to preserve the Titanic's tragic legacy would be to bring as many artifacts up as possible to display publicly.

I remember telling people about Titanic and they would say What was that! Not anymore. My Titanic collection pieces are my most prized possessions. In the 80's Before she was discovered, I found an old postcard collection that spanned about 60 years in chronological order from date mailed. I saved the one from April 17th 1912 where the sender referenced the Titanic Tragedy. What I feel for this ship I simply can not put into words. It is an emotion that is indescribable. I'm okay with artifacts being brought up and kept on permanent public display in exhibits and such, as long as you don't cause damage to the actual structure in order to acquire them, but I am 100% against them being sold in auctions to private buyers. No civilian, no matter how rich and privileged they may be, should ever be able to own artifacts brought up from that site. It actually took me a while to support removing anything at all, but I will never support a single item being auctioned off to private buyers.

I really want the Diana statue to be recovered. She was one thing I really wanted to be found again and id love to see her in person. Id even love to own a replica because I love that type of art. That music id love to see recovered and scanned so we can hear what the music that person liked. Its even possible those could be the only surviving copies of whatever is on them. I too feel like the historical significance of these items is too great to let them rot away. I feel like we should recover what we can before its too late and I feel like these items recovered should be in places available to the public. I feel like replicas of some artifacts should be made so that people can hold and hear a piece of history. We should do these things so the memory of the disaster lasts forever. We today are long distanced from the disaster in time but also so close when we can see and hear what those people aboard her did over 110 years ago.

The level of dedication to this project is staggering. It's about preservation of history, the stories they tell and the importance of the role they played. Especially given the bow railing beginning to fall. I fear that time is rubning out to save anything from the wreck as it begins to deteriorate rapidly. Recent wreck footage was heartbreaking, but the work being done by yourselves and titanic Inc is a shining light in the cold icy darkness. For the records, if you go through a long and careful procedure of cleaning, you might be able to play these on a modern record player with a lighter pickup needle. The shellac of which these records are made won't get damaged by the seawater or mud that easily in the next few hundred years.

The standard for 78 rpm was set in 1912, therefore these disc don't need to follow this standard. And even if you could set any rpm speed at a modern record player, in the early times there have been several systems how the groove was cut/pressed into these records. Therefore even if the material is still stable you first have to clearly identify which kind of records they are. And then it is very likely that you can find the already digitized recordings from the same company. It's unlikely that there is a completly unique record, which isn't available anymore today, down there on the bottom of the ocean.

As a HUGE fan of the Titanic, I’m intrigued with some of the artifacts retrieved (respectfully) around her. I wish Titanic’s sister, the Olympic, wasn’t dismantled after her service. After everything the Olympic survived/encountered… she should’ve been docked, maintained and boarded by the public as a “Tribute” to her fallen twin, Titanic. Perhaps then, there wouldn’t be a massive need/want to visit Titanic’s “gravesite.”

I think there is a reasonable middle ground that can me made in the whole "historical preservation vs. grave robbing" debate. If the artifacts are taken up with the most delicate care possible and preserved, then have them be placed in a respectable museum for anyone interested in Titanic to see. Don't sell them to private collectors and don't parade them in some traveling circus or some Vegas "Titanic Experience" between a McDonald's and a Burlesque show. Make sure the museum is not for profit and any admission fees made go towards maintaining the museum and the artifacts themselves. I personally feel that saving these artifacts are helping keep the memories of those perished alive and can be done with the utmost respect. And naturally (I'm not sure how many are still around today) but if a passenger's personal item is identified and there are living descendants still around who might want it, give them the chance to claim the item if they choose.

The boiler will be the most difficult seeing as its weight has likely sunk it into the seabed. They will probably need a team of ROVs to excavate the site while weight-balancing the boiler with flotation bags. They can't just rip it out the seabed, the last thing they want is for it to have an uncontrolled ascent.
@E46Knight
@E46Knight Ай бұрын
I agree. However, the boiler being embedded into the seabed isn’t the most challenging issue. The ocean’s floor is soft. The challenge of lifting the boiler resides in the weight of the actual boiler… WITH the weight of the water INSIDE of it.

Nice selection, I like them all except for the boiler. Those were 91.5 tons each, or approximately 183,000 pounds. I don't know if the technology exists to pull one of them up from 2.5 miles today. Where to hook up to it and whether it would crumble are also big problems.

Solid list 👍. Definitely, the recovery of the remaining rockets would be beneficial as it would indeed put to rest the controversy over their colour on the night of the disaster. Recovery of one of the single ended boilers would be difficult and expensive but not impossible, I think. Perhaps we owe it to P. H Nargeolet to at least attempt it. 🙂

The Diana Statuette is likely made of bronze, which means probably the longest lasting item of the entire wrecksite. Bronze, not corroding, nor melting, and apparently marine bacteria don't eat that either. It would be a nice touch to see at an exhibition but I think it has even more impact staying as pristine as before while the whole ship slowly deterioriating... The rockets mostly made of brass, but already show corrosion. The rocket box has historic value and also somehow aesthetically pleasing because of the brass surface so I think it's worth to salvage before eroding to unrecognizable. The boiler is huuuge. And not just huge but heavy. I understand the parallel of Titanic with size, but not 100% agree on that. The sentimental value is obvious, however I thought something easier salvagable and more unique detached part of the ship like the cover of the #1 Hatch would have as big impact as the boiler with way less effort (read: cost). Letters... a full intact word on the plank is just something hard to believe that still exists after more than a 100 years. Small, delicate, easy - how it's not recovered already? The music records however ... I never even dared to think about things like that remained. It would be an eerie addition to any exhibit playing the _exact_ music from the ship. I would feel like seeing a ghost somehow. Very close touching experience. Too close. Part of me really want it, part of me simply find it unearthly disturbing.

I totally agree with everything you said as far as artifacts being recovered, those artifacts would be very nice to have except the boiler would be so costly to bring up plus where are you? Gonna keep it at cause you can’t just transported to every museum it would have to be in one stationary museum And that’s where it would have to stay but my personal artifacts that I would like to see is one of the funnels some of the railing.

I first would like to thank you all at Titanic: Honor and Glory for all of the magnificent work you are doing. I really wish you would make a video game where the player was the 1st officer and the challenge is to see if there was an order he could have given to avert the horrible ending. By using the model you have as well as the order hard to starboard and full speed astern, and achieving the damage to the first 5 compartments and slightly into the 6th, you would have nailed the proper distance the ship was from the berg. This is when the bell would ring, not at 11:40, but sometime around there to prevent cheating. With this accomplished, the player could then try different orders, such as hard to starboard, (engines left full ahead), hard to port, hard to starboard stop port, hard to port stop starboard, stop engines full astern, and any and all others. This ofcourse would not help the victims of the disaster, nor would it be an attempt to apply blame. Rather, it would be to see if W.M. Murdoch had e chance to save her, himself and all the others. You see with the technology we have here today, this can be discovered.

I believe as much as possible should be salvaged from the wreck. Leaving all those pieces of history get slowly buried in mud and eaten away by bacteria makes as much sense to me as leaving a modern plane wreck get buried by nature in a jungle.

Many people actually have a problem with this. There’s a double standard where our dead are granted perfect eternal rest, but the dead from ancient civilizations can be dissected, displayed, and exploited for tourism in the name of science and history. A dead person deserves peace. Tombs, from all eras, should be left undisturbed, and the argument of knowledge or archaeology should not be accepted.

There are certainly lots of interesting smaller things that could and arguably should be recovered. The boiler would be a tricky one for sure, even if they got it to the surface the 57 ton weight would dwarf the 'big piece' and then treating / stabilizing all the metal surfaces would be arguably too much of a task, think of the internal square footage that would be almost impossible to access. It would also have to have a singular display location as the weight would prevent it from easily be moved around, unless it was done at great cost. Though, it would be an incredible piece to see in person.

Considering that the Titanic was such a monumental disaster when it occurred I do believe that whatever can be brought up should be brought up. Any and all research that can be done to help improve safety of travel and passengers on ships, airplanes, and trains usually it's time from some kind of disaster. Sad but true, but yet it's how progress moves forward.
