Honestly, there are quite a few practical uses for a plane that can fit in a large suitcase for observation uses.

NAS Norfolk, VA had a Pogo on static display when I was stationed there in the early 70's -- I wonder if it's still there? I happened to be standing near it when I saw my first AV-8 Harrier flying by very slowly in formation with several helicopters, an impossible dream come true.

The "inflat-o-plane" was meant to be a DIY rescue craft It could be dropped to a downed flier who would assemble it, and fly himself out. Naturally it floated, too. But the wings would buckle if anyone tried to loop it, and while there were civilians who wanted it, Their lawyers told them that SOMEONE would try to loop it, crash, and sue them, so they dropped the whole project. A shame, too! A functional aircraft that you could fold up into a corner of your garage would've been great!

Cool video, tricky to pick a favourite airplane out of those. I'd pick the XFY Pogo, it flew much better than it looked like it would. It transitioned from vertical to horizontal quite smoothly for such an early VTOL attempt, seems quite fast too.

As noted earlier the video confuses the Lockheed XFV-1 vertical take off plane with the Convair XFY (Pogo). Both were designed do the same specification in parallel. A little research and diligence goes along way.

The flap jack was more of a mystery than most. Although the specs for the planed are not that great, the reality the design could exceed 500 mph when they completed the research. They did not want it because soon the jets replaced propellers.

The F-82 Mustang seems like one of those military excuses to throw money at contractors. The goal was a fighter with two pilots for long escort flights, but they could have achieved the same thing a lot cheaper by stretching the fuselage of a P-38 for a second seat.

From a builders perspective, it is a lot easier to join two aircraft together by the wings like that then it would be to develop a whole new platform. Extending the length of it would reduce it's maneuverability as well.

There wasn't one of those planes that I would have gotten into even if they had made it to the production line... Well, actually, the P52 (or did they call it the F52? I forget). I would have liked to fly that one but then, it' was just two P51s sewn together and the P51 was a very good plane, so it wouldn't have taken too much to accept a ride in it. However, every time I've seen that Pogo, I would shake my head and think, "unless that 'small ship' was tied to a dock in very calm water, that plane was going to wind up in the drink on a landing maneuver, 75% of the time! LOL. Rich

What causes what was presumably high quality film end up with so low resolution as at 5:50 on KZbin all the time? I have also deep respect to aircraft designers who dare to get off the beaten track cause that is how progress is made. And I have to laugh at people who judge aircraft from a beauty perspective only, probably kids or simple souls. Of course there are some beautiful planes, streamlining is pleasing to the eye ;)

I would prefer the sound of the airplanes instead of a robots voice , meanwhile the narration was drowned out by worse computer degenerated music. The airplanes were 'interesting' back in the day. Pilots had steel balls, and the weight of them caused many 'incidents'. (AKA crashes).
