One mistake I made was waiting too long. I wanted to be really good before I started getting clients. I have to admit, I would recommend against this. Now, I have seen some woefully poor photography being offered on ads where I live. However, they do charge small amounts and they will improve. I have learned that the best way and fastest way to get good is to charge for it. I spent years doing photography my way, when, and how I liked. Thats good and you can get pretty good like that but it takes lots of time. When I placed my first ad I was shocked at how fast I got my first few clients. I was also shocked at how fast I had to improve. Nothing improves your skill set like being paid for it. Cant wait to see where I'm at next year.

Been a youtuber for years and finally upgraded to a DSLR last month and I been trying to improve a tonn!! got my first paid job from my cousin and another client i met at an event, she saw my pictures and want me to take pictures of her daughters birthday, I try my best and take lots of photos but its more of a donation for my time until I grow as a self business that can sustain me but for now i wouldnt do free photos for strangers that want pictures. friends usually get a deal but they understand its more than just a hobbie and that i am trying to its great to have the support. i try my best and word of mouth does the rest for now until i get a website =D

Thanks for the tips Jared. I agree with networking with peers, but have also found that others feels awkward about the relationship except for one person in town, so I'm concentrating on developing that relationship. Maybe you can suggest ways to get a good honest critique of my work to help me (and others) grow?

Not really, they hire you "who you know". And it's hard. True networking with Photographer's so true, I stay away from competition and they sneaky, gets my idea and backstabbing.. It's hard, even DJ's will hire own friends. Nope!

I agree with charities. I'm an the list of several photographers with the Ronald McDonald House. One or two is OK.
