You two are one of the reasons I realized I needed a dry spell. I lost my husband suddenly 3 months ago and I was having a drink every night. I saw on one of your videos that you do dry weeks and it made me realize I was headed in a bad direction. I went dry two weeks and broke it with only an ounce tasting. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your passion for whiskey and this subject. Thank you for caring for us all.

Thank you for addressing alcohol abuse. Alcoholism is all over my family. So I try to maintain a 3-1 rule: I can only drink 3 days in a row (1-2 glasses per day) before I have to take a day off, though I rarely hit that 3 day limiter. Also I can't drink if I'm upset about something, I have to call a friend first and vent.

I get that this is an old comment, but I love it as I have given my daughter’s boyfriend and friends (who are alcohol-curious teenagers beginning to experiment, as so many do) the same advice - don’t drink when you’re sad/upset/angry. Only do it to relax, to celebrate or to just experience your senses. The human brain is a strange machine, and it will literally rewire to associate any two stimuli that are commonly paired.

I remember when I was new to whiskey at a friend's wedding another friend opened a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label. He understood that not everyone at the wedding was used to drink whiskey straight so he asked me if I wanted ice, soda, or straight. He understood that we were at different levels and that a celebration is a good reason to open an expensive whiskey. I really appreciated it. My first glass I had with ice and loved it so much that my 2nd glass was straight and I've never gone back since.

True story: my friend is a fellow bartender at a high end hotel. This guy comes in, asks for a Johnny Walker Blue and Coke. My friend quietly took him aside and said "Sir, that's a fine scotch. I recommend you don't add cola to it". Buddy asks to buy a bottle - now in my country it's illegal to buy a bottle, so my friend had to charge him by the ounce. Ends up being around $900. He signs off the bill... then dumps the entire bottle down the sink. Asks for a Johnny Walker Blue and Coke. "Right away, sir."

I mean my go to whiskey is the Knob and while most of the time when I am at home I will sip on it neat, when I am out and about I prefer to order it w/ coke (it's delicious w/ coke btw) as it helps to slow down how fast I drink each one and I tend to drink less of the them cause the coke makes me feel full. I don't really care what anyone has to say about me drinking them w/ coke either cause if it's not like I'm drinking a new whiskey that way anyway and if I'm gonna try a new whiskey it ain't gonna be spending $10 or more on a drink at a bar when there are better places to do that.

I am going into the second month of a six month dry spell myself. I was definitely in that third category. Using alcohol as a coping mechanism for issues in my life. I also have a terrible family history of alcoholism and saw myself headed down that path. So I'm taking a few months to get myself in a better place and building a small whisky collection in the process. Major props to you guys for making abuse something that can be openly talked about.

I've had a 1-3 drink a day habit for years now, but I have always followed a set of rules that for me is pretty easy to adhere to. Never drink at work(or before lol), never more than 3 unless it is a holiday or occasional weekend thing, and never if I already feel bad like I am sick or something. I use it more to unwind for the day, and it doesn't cause me any life issues but I do tend to get in depressive episodes where I can't get the motivation to enjoy doing anything. When that crops up I also take a break for a few days or switch to a low abv beer like guiness.

Thank you guys for this episode, you made me realize that I had a problem. Even as I type I am way too many drinks in. It wasn't alcoholism, but based on your drink count at the end of the video, it almost was. My grandmother basically died from alcoholism by liver cancer which had spread to other parts of her body and now I can see that it skipped a generation as diseases do (it skipped my mother) and now it has found me. Not ever before has a KZbin video impacted my very existence as much as this video. Thank you.

Guys, very well done. I suspect that the two channels, merch, etc. are all doing far better than you anticipated. You're a great team, and you've earned the success you're enjoying. That's what makes your discussion regarding abuse so impressive. There was some risk in raising the abuse issue. It's not pleasant. It could cost you support, subscribers and viewers. But its clear that this was on your minds, and you felt a responsibility to raise the issue. What you did shows genuine honor and integrity. Seriously. I was a fan before today. Today's episode has taken my "fandom" to a new level.

Awesome video! Growing up, alcohol itself was taboo in my family. I come from a long line of alcoholics and abusers and most of my family has a Native American heritage. It took me years to be willing to even try it. Needless to say, I was 21 when I had my first drink. Since, I've found out how to drink in a responsible way. At 26 I love some good whiskey. The thing I do to prevent abuse is just simply putting rules around it. I do not drink before 7 (except special occasions), I only have 2 oz if it's a week night, and lastly I cannot drink 7 nights in a row without a night off. And aside from all of those rules, I will stop before I feel like I'm getting drunk as my goal with whiskey is to enjoy it, not be intoxicated. Idk, it what I found that works for me.

The fact that you touched on a subject that could "harm" your image/ business and continued on with it is absolutely amazing and I'm sure you've been praised many times over for doing so. This was probably your best episode yet. Thank you for that. Perfect timing too....my dad just got home wasted as fuck....and he drove home. Wasted from goddamn wine (that's what you get when you skip dinner...). I know there is always a lingering threat with alcohol. I had one major fuckup with it when I was 17 (can't remember much of that night), and since then I always switched to iced tea after a couple of drinks (because riding home on a train at 7am when completly fucked is no fun). Now with my whisky collection at home ever growing, I set myself a limit, 2 ounces max. When I'm tasting I'm not getting anywhere near that. I do have my 30th birthday coming up in a few weeks, and we are celebrating at an irish pub with an amazing whisky selection, so I might get a bit drunk on that day, but I alrady got a hotel about 100m from the pub so I should be good. Not going to drive 80 miles drunk....but come on, on my 30th I'm allowed to get a couple drinks in. Won't be able to drink any for 6 months after that anyway (surgery...). So yeah, long story short, thanks for this episode you magnificent bastards.....sorry for the incoherent post, it's 1am and I'm still a bit dizzy from a hot bath^^

That's what's great about these videos (both the whiskey vault and the biscuits): it's fun and easygoing, which makes for a very low threshold, while at the same time, in a weird, half nerdy, half goofing around kinda way, makes sense and is educational. The way you guys handled the last 2 taboos especially is just great. I have a lot of friends who are not into whisky at all and I wouldn't dream about telling them to try this or that or to drink it so and so, but when they do ask, I sometimes find it hard to not overwhelm them because I'm such an enthusiast, at the risk of getting too nerdy or pedantic. As for the abuse, I have a tendency for getting addicted to just about anything (from alcohol to pot, to sports, to videogames), so I have this sort of code or rule: I don't drink strong liquor on weekdays (or it should be for a really special occasion) and when I drink, it's no more than 3 glasses (usually even no more than 2), spread across an entire evening/night. That way, I can savor the anticipation, starting Mondays all the way until I can kick back and relax on a Friday night. Anyway, just want to conclude with saying congrats on all the good work and slainte, from a bastard from Belgium to 2 pretty magnificent bastards in Texas.

My grampa has many controversial opinions on whisky, here are a few: - whisky from outside Scotland isn’t whisky - Speyside scotch “is for posh wankers and children” - Ardbeg is “peaty shite” and “made for cleaning drains” - Talisker is “a woman’s drink” - Lagavulin 16 is “the best! A real Scottish drink!” You can see how some of these things might be subjective...

Yes sirs, great video. My New Years resolution was actually to consume less alcohol, and I am doing a good job keeping to it. I was probably going through a bottle a week through the last 4 months of 2017, and so far this year I probably have not passed the 3/4 bottle mark. BTW last year I spent $2,623.93 on alcohol, 95% whiskey, and a lot of that can be attributed to the whiskey vault channel. This number just includes bottles bought, and not drinks out, which would make the total even higher.

Gentleman. I just started watching/subscribed to your channels about a week ago and immediately became enamored by both your knowledge and the banter between both of you. It reminds me of myself and many of my friends. I just recently picked up a bottle of Monkey shoulder (loved it) because you inspired me to try it. So you had my attention because of the humor and overall relatable personalities. But now you have my utmost respect for taking on the responsibility of addressing alcoholism/ alcohol abuse. Something that has deeply affected a majority of families in some way. Needless to say i will now be a frequent viewer. Thank you!

I have become a huge fan of your channels and your reviews. I just want to say that the way you approached taboo #5 was refreshing. I used to be in that category until my wife got pregnant 8 years ago. I then quit drinking for almost three years. I love how professional and passionate you guys are about this. I always had a thing for whiskey. It just seemed so cool to me for some reason. Now I finally pulled the trigger and based of your top 10 beginner whisky's, I bought 4 bottles to try out. They'll arrive in 2 days :) Previously I only had Johny Walker red, because my parents had it at home. And it was terrible, almost couldn't get it down. So that turned me off of whisky. So I thought maybe I just don't like whisky. But after some research, I heard other people complaining about JW red. And then I came across your channel's. So I decided to give it another try. :) btw the whisky's I bought were: Monkey shoulder, Jameson, Glenfiddich and Elijah Craig. I really hope I will at least like one of them xd

Found your channel recently (Oct '21)....I've been a drinker since age 21, have always set a budget and stuck to it, and since finding your channel, I can still spend the same amount per month, but expand the variety in my home. I used to regularly attend some drink/food events in the area when they were really popular here and learning that some alcohol can really accentuate the foods started me down the path of drinking more for pleasure than a buzz. That was over 20 years ago.

I am not a true whisky drinker, though I do enjoy a glass from time to time, I prefer craft or homebrew beer and often watch channels related to that, though lately I've been watching more of you two than any of that, you are great to watch. I found you guys accidentally through the Modern Rogue and really appreciated your non-snobbish but appreciative take on whisky, it matches my take on beer... and pretty much anything else that can be enjoyed. It is really great to see you addressing the issue of alcohol abuse, it is one thing I try to be mindful of and often goes completely ignored in conversations and videos about alcohol consumption. I think it is fantastic that you are literally working it in to your channel and demonstrating it not just talking about it.

Just turned 21 this past week, I've been watching your channel for several months and am so excited to start this journey. That number 1 taboo hit home. Not because I even misuse alcohol but the way my family has a knee jerk reaction to my enthusiasm for whisk(e)y. I work nights and so unless its a weekend if I drink its usualy around 1pm-2 and the family won't stop ball busting me about how I'll become an alcoholic. Idk I love this tribe I only have a dram at a time never more, has anyone else experienced a pushback from family even when you really arent consuming a lot? What's considered moderate alcohol consumption, is one a day too much? I like beer and wine too but different drinks for different occasions idk the family make me feel like I'm overdoing things.

Thanks for the video. I find Strong beers like Russian Imperial Stouts, Strong Euro Lagers, Malt Liquor, etc. hit me harder than whisky. Thank you for this video. I wanted to touch on the breathalyzer. I’m a phlebotomist here in Texas. One thing I’ve learned through my schooling and licensing is that your blood alcohol level rises for up to two hours after you STOP drinking. So, if you are under the limit when you drive off, that doesn’t mean you will remain under the limit. I would continue to do the breathalyzer until you are under the limit and see your level start to decline. Thanks again for your great videos!

One thing that I do is have my wife around when I drink. She is my cutoff. She will tell the bartender when I've had too much. I should note, I do not, repeat, DO NOT become mean when drunk. I'm loud and giggly. She will cut me off and we go when she says it's time. At home, I don't drink any whiskey alone. She is there when I do and there's a reason. From what I've been told my brother and my father are mean drunks when they have whiskey. I do not want to find out if I am one of them or not. She keeps me accountable. When we do go out we go on our own free will. Not with friends and we have a budget at the bar. When that budget is done, we're done. Unless I'm getting too loud then we're done sooner. I also don't drink around my mother because my grandfather was a violent drunk. Respect the Mama. My respect to you guys for this video. Cheers to all the MBs.

However, my dad's an alcoholic and it's caused a lot of hardships in my life and his life as well. He is getting sober now though and I'm proud of him for hitting his 90 day mark yesterday. Rule three: If Scotch you drink is on sale, buy some. . . . For my first several years drinking whisky, EVERYTHING, (Laphroaig, MaCallan, Dalmore, Old Pulteney . . . everything) went in a glass of coke (hence the name Malt Philistine). Then I had a life changing moment when I opened my first bottle of Scapa 16. I caught a whiff of that sweet pure grain, and I was like "Holy S#!T, there is no way I can put this in Coke. . . Enjoy your journey everyone.

It's really disappointing how little any of the bartenders or liquor store owners in rural MN know about anything besides the typical Miller Lite and Capt Morgan and Coke types of alcohol...it's like being surrounded by everyone who's the lowest common denominator that only mixes garbage whiskey with soda or does shots...I'm trying to not be snobbish about it, but it's so hard to find any selection around here and everyone just seems to be an alcoholic that's only concerned about what gets them the most drunk for the least money...

I've been a serious alcoholic and drug addict. Doctor said I needed change and prescribed me naltroxone. That along with counseling has changed my life. I have truly limited my alcohol intake. I take the naltroxone if I plan on going out that weekend. This helps with the desire to get drunk and basically prevents any euphoria from the alcohol. My health and wallet are so much happier now. I'm still able to enjoy a drink or two. This makes me appreciate the taste of good whiskey so much more
