Hauler can be outfitted for exploration on early stages of the game. It would jump about 30ly while carrying a decent pack of exploration modules, so hate for hauler is undeserved.

the only ship I disagree with you on is the Type 6. I actually use this ship to run data and cargo between two systems to get my Empire rank up. I'm able to carry more cargo with the type 6 then I can with my ASP Exp. I believe every ship got their pros and cons, it's pretty much comes down to your preference and what kinda commander you are. o7

Yep, T6 is great for exploration. Very capable explorer for less than the cost of the entry-level Asp Explorer! Get the FSD upgraded by the engineers and you can push the jump range even further. Mine's been to Jaques', Sag A and the neutron fields a couple of times. coriolis.io/outfit/type_6_transporter/0p8tdFal8d8s8f4--0202023af5v40q432f2i.AwRj-ZU8g===.Aw1-kA==

Agreed. With FSD upgrades I had a 32LY jump range on mine, fitted a big scoop and extra fuel on it, then took it out about 10k LY. That trip fully funded my AspX.
@paulom7106
@paulom7106 7 жыл бұрын
I have a ASP Explorer and T6, after FSD engineering to lvl 5, I can made jumps over 38+ Ly with both! But are 2 advantages in T6: the price and fuel usage for jumps (people usually forget this thing). If you place a fuel scoop lvl 5 in a T6 you can travel faster than an explorer, becouse the time for scopping is very reduced in a T6.

There is something the hauler does better than just about anything else, and that is smuggling. It's small size and power output makes for a very stealthy ship.

That's interesting, Sam. Thanks for the new game play to try out. So, you can dash in and out of stations without being scanned? And is it still true that silent running and heat sinks no longer work and you just have to go fast through the slots?
@Stahlwollvieh
@Stahlwollvieh 7 жыл бұрын
Fully agree with Jones here. Hauler is the single best taxi ship in the game. Whining about offensive capabilities seems a bit moot, I don't hear people complaining about Lakon Type X's weapons either - because it's besides the point of the ship. Hauler prolly makes a pretty good rares trader too for new players, that would probably be its best use apart from taxiing. Also the Type 6 is imo really good for its price for anything that's not combat related. It makes a good budget trader or miner, it's not too sluggish to consider it for smuggling and it even makes a good exploration ship, only suffering from overheating issues there. Just my 2 cents.

The only ones I agree with is the Cobra MK IV and the Asp Scout. However your argument against the Viper MK IV was very opinionated. The MK IV is supposed to be a heavily armored version of its smaller version allowing it to more effectively stand against even Anaconda's. The Viper MK IV has no reason to be hated. Neither does the Type 6. The type 6 can carry over 100 tons of cargo and at a price of a little over 1 mil. The Asp Explorer carries that much cargo as well but it costs 5 million credits more. The Type 6 is the most affordable way to start carrying decent amounts of cargo. also why hate the hauler? I know it's not something you're gonna fly forever but for newer players it's the perfect ship to start trading in. They can do a rare trade loop and make quite a few million credits in a few hours. I think this video is very opinionated. You're trying to treat starter ships as if they are end game content that is supposed to be perfect. They're not end game content though, the Hauler and Type 6 are simply there to help people get started in trading. Just as I said though the only ships in this video that are actually bad are the Asp Scout and Cobra MK IV

Im 4 years late but I agree 100%, I love the hauler, great jump range, imo good sounding, retro sci fi interior, quick (with EPTs), decent cargo for the size (one of the smallest small ships) reasonably semi decent handling (especially for a cargo ship) with the right pilot, you can even do combat or (if you are crazy good) Anti-Xeno, and just casually solo a hydra. I digress, I love the hauler and i'll fight anyone who doesn't.

Saying the type 6 is worthless (video, not you) is an idiot move. It's unquestionably the best hauler until the Explorer, which costs 7 times as much. Type 7, though, IS worthless... Imperial Clipper, which is cheaper, is also MUCH faster, better armed, and can carry MORE cargo.

I dunno, I love my Viper IV. Engineered, it has 500+ MJ of shields and is very manueverable, especially considering the Mk. III's garbage pitch rate. It also has a larger power distributor, meaning it can support the hungrier energy weapons without four pips to WEP. It also has a much better jump range, even with a full combat fit. Personally, I prefer it to the Mk. III.

The keelback had recently become my favorite deep space vessel with its improvements. Carries two srv's and a fighter with room for my shields and scanners, and doesn't have a half bad jump range compared to my first explorer, the cobra mkiii (made it past Orion in my first excursion thanks to the cobra). That, and it's so endearingly janky, it's like having my own Eureka Maru in elite!

The cobra 4 neeeeds a buff. It doesnt have to be the "Be all, end all" small ship like so many people seem to think. I would love if it could be a bit faster than it currently is. (No faster than a mk3) BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAKE THE THING FASTER! If i'm going to be out-gunned pretty much every interaction, and have weak af shields, at least give me the option to run instead of leaving it down to sheer luck.

Trading ships need only one thing, and that is cargo. Lakon transporters have that, so as far as I'm concerned they are good freighters. Yeah they are bad at everything else, but what else are you going to get at 1M and 17M credits? There are no other trading ships around those price points. So you have to get T6 and T7. As for Cobra mk4, they made it because it is the iconic Elite ship (idk why but it is). And they had to make it a bigger version of mk3 because otherwise people would just stick to mk3.

so when you get interdicted that cargo space is going to help you how exactly ? trading ship that cant survive long enough to get away from the interdiction is USELESS
@epithet052
@epithet052 7 жыл бұрын
Asghaad You don't seem to understand what "useless" means. Freighters haul goods, therefore they are not useless, period. Also if you die to NPC interdiction then I would tend to suggest you are not a very good pilot; whereas if a player with a good ship kills you then they would have done it even if you were in a different ship.
@Asghaad
@Asghaad 7 жыл бұрын
Tatco™ freighter that blows up the moment pirate looks at it is USELESS. and i wonder, how do you survive interdiction by NPC when your boost speed is slower than theyr normal speed and your shielding is nonexistant
@epithet052
@epithet052 7 жыл бұрын
Asghaad You can keep all capping but that doesn't it true. One doesn't run away from pirates in a straight line. Turn off flight assist, start doing rolls, pitch and yaw randomly, boost as much as possible, drop mines, use your chaff. If it's an anaconda or a python then yes you are probably doomed, but otherwise you'll get away. The combat ships are faster than the Lakons... IF they divert power to engine rather than weapon. And if they want to nerf their guns I'd say go right ahead. Also it's your fault not the ship's if you don't install shield on it.
@Asghaad
@Asghaad 7 жыл бұрын
Tatco™ sigh, Type 9 Heavy has 206 (199 when laden ...) boost speed with 7D thrusters and whopping 300 shields with 6A shield generator ... if you get interdicted by anything larger than Viper, you will die ...

Ehh you shouldn't worry too much I have one and I enjoy flying it. It has it's upsides as well as it's downsides. Think of it as a Cobra 3 with better acceleration and lateral thrusters (it has a lower top speed, but it doesn't "stall", when you change direction), and a smaller profile so it's not as easy to hit from the top or bottom. The trade off is that it doesn't have quite as much cargo space or jump range. It's manoeuvrability is different but not necessarily worse. It's pitch rate isn't good, but every other aspect of it's manoeuvrability is good. If you fidget with the lateral thrusters whilst "jousting", with another ship you can avoid PAs, Railguns, and Cannons pretty reliably. This is pretty useful considering how heavily the AI ships use Railguns and PAs. I wouldn't consider it a pure combat ship it's basically a more combat oriented Cobra 3, so it's good for lots of missions and a bit of combat. The strong lateral thrusters make it ideal for planetary flying because you don't have to worry about it sinking in high gravity, or drifting down too fast when you are trying to land so of course It's a good choice for base assaults and planetary salvage missions. I can make it work with fixed weapons in a Haz Res using a standard A rated build with no engineering mods. I'm going to switch out the engineered thrusters from my Cobra 3 later and see what it can really do, I think that this will alleviate the poor pitch rate and give it some decent speed thus eliminating it's main weakness.

There is actually ONE single good purpose for the Hauler: To quickly get to Ceos/Sothis systems if you make a fresh start (happens to me now and then because I play permadeath). Hauler is super cheap so within 30 or so minutes you can be on your way. Only thing you need is the B-rated FSD, a cheap fuel scoop and if you want one or two fuel tanks. Saving for A-rated FSD is a waste of time at that point. If you can, get all other modules to D (they are the lightest). Keep the basic scanner and use it on each jump for good extra cash at Sothis when you handle in the exploration data. Hauler is so fuel-efficient that you don't even need the fuel scoop, you can reach 440+ LY with those tanks which more than is enough. Once you get to Ceos/Sothis you do data missions between those systems, start ranking up with factions and quickly upgrade to Cobra MkIII -> Type 6 which once fitted with the A-rated FSD and bunch of cargo space will be good enough for your first hauling trip back to the bubble and that single run will earn you enough credits to buy the ASP Explorer from the Chinese - your first "real" ship. Few more runs and you can get a Type 7 and then a Python. Don't stay too long in the Type 7, it's too risky. From that point you can work your way up for an Anaconda or whatever you desire. It's beneficial to get as soon as possible to Ceos/Sothis because the lower your trader rank and higher your factions rank, more money you will be offered for a ton per cargo, sometimes as high as 300.000+ per ton. I don't accept anything lower than 100.000.

When they came up with the ships it is like they wanted no ship to be perfect at its role. So fighters have a few issues to keep them from being perfect fighters (and being crap at everything a fighter doesn't need) and multipurpose ships though usually only have one or two things they are bad at. Then we have trade ships, what do they need? Just cargo space and jump range. So you have small cargo ships that have the jump range but not the cargo space and then you have the large ones that have the cargo but not the jump range. Meanwhile there are multipurpose ships that have both of those qualities.

I would like to argue that the hauler is actually quite good. It can carry quite a lot of cargo for its size and can get over 30ly jump range which is fantastic for trading rares as a beginner.

Hrm! That was cute. Viper 4 can be a nice alternative to a Cobra 3 for a multi-purpose ship geared more towards combat, if you, for some reason, need to keep jumping systems quickly whilst doing so. This comes down more to personal taste then anything, but sometimes one really can't suffer those Cobra 3 C1 convergences. However, my biggest complaint of this video is lumping the Type-6 in with the rest of the Lakon Type series, because the Type-6 is a fantastic cheap/mid ship for trading, mining, exploring, fuel ratting, basically anything that isn't direct combat. It's actually a zippy ship with 350m/s stock boot, which outruns the Vulture and Python and keeps pace with the FDL. The presentation of this list feels like it comes from someone who focuses more on combat to merit a ship's weight, which is cool and all, but then you miss gems like the Type-6, which is good at everything except combat.

Most of us got our MKIV Vipers for free, then busted out bigger thrusters to make up for maneuverability. From a solo-perspective, it's ok if you got it for free and beast out the parts. From a wing-perspective, it's awesome as a support system for large-scale bounty hunting.

I think viper Mk4 is a great ship, I flew it for hundreds of hours in HRES and combat zones. Certainly not as maneuverable as Mk3 but the better shields and armor let it take on much larger ships with ease. The added compartments can take additional hull reinforcements or SCBs. It's a really good stepping stone to the vulture.

The worst ship is the sidewinder, not because it isn't functional but because it's the ED equivalent of the Ghastly Gibus from TF2. It's just humiliating to fly around in. I don't know anyone who unironically chooses to pilot a sidewinder.

Aw, I like the Viper Mk IV. It's better used as a light multipurpose than as a fighter IMO, although I do plan to engineer one to the max and see how it handles in combat with G5 Dirty Drives! It's got great jump range and a good amount of internals for all your mission-running necessities (SRV bay, cargo racks, discovery scanner, fuel scoop, etc.) You gotta fly it like a mini Python with lots of active pip management because it benefits a lot from having more pips in ENG while turning. It wouldn't be my first choice for low-budget RES hunting, but it definitely has its place among the multipurpose ships as a slightly tankier alternative to the Cobra Mk III.

Couldn't agree more, and hilariously well delivered. I would have chosen the T7 as the hands down worst ship in the game, but I had forgotten about the Cobra MK IV "thank-you", which was just spot on.

This was great. I agree on all areas. Why get a slow, weak hauling ship when you can sack a cargo rack and get a multipurpose one? Keelback was one of the ships and I didn't understand why it existed.. now it's actually getting buffed into vague usability in 2.2 as it's capable of launching fighters (but the python isn't, what?).. and so is the type 7, but nothing else apparently. Frontier really do make some bizarre, if not stupid, design decisions.

Just want to make note if you strip weapons and sheilds off a type series and get the best power plant, distributor, thrusters, and frame shift drive you can out run and out jump most other ships in their class or better. THEY are freighters not fighters. Most of the other ships in the game are converted military craft designed to fight. The Lakon Type series is purpose built. Plus the idea behind them is that they wouldnt be alone since they have short jump ranges or be more players securing routes to reduce the pirating in areas for their safe travel. I agree with most of your reasoning for all the other ships. Though I just want to say they are not great ships but I know pilots who have fitted them and can be interdicted but not be caught. Not always but pretty consistently.

The Viper IV is not a bad ship, it's just misunderstood. It is not a fighter, but a multipurpose ship with combat capabilities. Something along the lines of a low budget Krait/Python. Also, the Hauler is pretty great as a space taxi. It's speed, maneuvrability, jump range, and performance are pretty much the same as the Adder's, but at half the price.

Late to the show, but hey, recently picked up the game. Moved from viper 3 to 4, puked a bit at how it moved and filled it with cargo racks and an A grade fsd and ran haulage for some hours until I could get a good kitted out dbs. Never again. Surprisingly large cargo space when you skip shields though...

The imperial courier is a beast in combat, and it has a much better jump range than other combat ships. Yes it's a bit overpriced, but I don't really see any other major downsides to it. The Diamondback Explorer (not saying anything about DBS, as I haven't used it before) is a fantastic explorer ship. It's about 25 million cr cheaper to fit for exploring than an AspX, has a greater (unengineered) jump range than the AspX (37ly max 40 compared to 33ly max 36) and will never overheat while fuel scooping due to the diamondback's insanely low heat output. So it's a pretty good ship for exploring. (All numbers taken from coriolis, both ships fit with a maximum size A fuel scoop and ADS, all internals D grade except for FSD)

Cobra IV is actually OP. It can have over 2,400 hull integrity. Against 2 clippers I finished the fight with 47% hull. The thing can take a beating better than most anacondas. It is actually a valued fighter with 3 small and 2 medium hardpoints and plenty of power. It costs less than 9mil to fully A rate, and best of all it has the speed and maneuverability of a stock asp, if not better. The forums claim the Cobra IV is a gift to players who purchased the season 1 expansion, and by getting rid of it entirely from shipyards it is now a more rare ship, perhaps even a collectible.

I owned a Type-6 and 7 and hated them both. The Type-6, I felt so horribly exposed flying that thing, like I could just feel every pirate in the system ready to jump me in my crappy space U-haul and the Type-7 was even worse, because it handled like a rusty hulk of junk covered in steaming pig-crap, hardpoint placement was terrible so even with gimbled or turreted weapons, you could never concentrate all your guns on a target and to cap it all off, the thing is huge, requiring a large landing pad and so cutting you off from numerous smaller ports, where you'll need to go as a trader to get the best deals.

You should equip trade ships with mine launchers if you are terrible and get interdicted all the time. Also the Lakon trade ships are more cost effective when trading than the higher priced ships of similar cargo capacity they were never meant for combat. Their entire purpose is to haul cargo and that they do very well.

The Asp Scout has it's place - it's got a good jump range and is nice to fly and has lots of power. It is better armed than the Cobra as it has a better power distributer. The Cobra Mk4 is a cheap way of getting LOTS of modules, so you can carry a lot of (low-rated) equipment. If you want a budget mining explorer, it's perfect. None of the ships in the game are actually "bad" - but some are more popular than other.

YES! I just saw your first elite video and im so happy man! I've been playing for about a year and its fun to see other people doing content on it woo edit: the hauler is a nice newb ship, and can be used as a taxi with 32ly jump range so I think it's fine. I honestly think that most every ship in the game is pretty good, it's hard to find one that is really that bad (and t-7 and keelback are getting buffs so woo). and saying that the anaconda ( a multi-hundred million credit ship) is better than the type 6 (a 2 million credit ship once upgraded) isn't fair to the type 6. it has a nice unladen jump range, and is an awesome early game trader. i used it in CG's multiple times, still do every now and then.

First of all, thank you for the video explaining your opinion about these ships and why you ranked them the way you did. But even more, the part of the video I enjoyed - well, not enjoyed, but appreciated - the most, was showing your approaching your cargo-hauling destination only to be interdicted and destroyed. I'm a new player, first discovering Elite: Dangerous about 6 weeks ago, and my best ship at this time is the Asp Explorer, equipped so the insurance cost is @822,000. I've managed to accumulate about 21 million credits, and am hoping to get enough to purchase and upgrade an Orca, for those type of missions appeal to me. I am NOT a good fighter pilot - at my age my reactions are not what they used to be - so I only play Solo mode. And in spite of this, it seems when ever I fill up my Explorer with cargo (96 tons), I will inevitably get interdicted near my destination by an Expert or Master fighter pilot, and then get my ass handed to me on a 822,000 credit insurance receipt! This leads to deep depression on my part, and a decision to only accept missions where half of my cargo is utilized. Of course, I'm overly dramatizing my reaction, but it has been frustrating to encounter pilots WAY above my abilities, and of course no other pilots assisting in these battles. In spite of this, Elite Dangerous is still, without a doubt, the best game/sim I've ever played, and I started in 1980 when I discovered computer games in my senior year of college.

hauler - good for a disposable ship that can go long distances viper mk4 - better power plant so more hardpoint options, and a bit more armor can keep you from poping as quickly as your shields, do when fighting bigger ships lakon type - 6 is a good early trader. 7 at the time i had enough to buy one i was of rank to get clipper so maybe if clipper isnt a option. 9 that is alot of cargo space and can be a stepping stone to the anaconda. all of these ships are no good in a dog fight, but boosting and laying mines as they run is devastating to any ship that is after them. i think the only one i agree with is the cobra mk 4, and that i can under stand you dont want to make a good ship an exclusive to people so its more of a trophy you can get.

I would actually say the worst ships are as follows #5: Imperial Eagle - It's fast and that's about all it does well, it lost most of the agility that made the original Eagle great, it has as much firepower as an Adder, and its price point is within 30k of the Viper Mk3 which is fast, agile, has more firepower, and is tougher. #4: Hauler - It's really a rubbish ship, it holds less cargo than the Adder, it's slower, and its offensive/defensive capability is a bloody joke. The only thing its actually good at is having a high jump range, but with the Adder being so close in price point there is really no reason to buy a Hauler. #3: Keelback - Lakon wanted to build a fighter/trader around their Type 6 frame and ended up just adding a bunch of bulk and two more guns. Despite having extra engines the ship is still slower and less agile than the Type 6. It's only redeeming quality is that it has a fighter hangar and really if you're going to be getting into scrapes with a Keelback you'll survive a lot longer if you launch a fighter from its bay than try to take out the baddies yourself in the Keelback. #2: Federal Dropship - It's lack of agility and shielding make it more or less useless as a combat vessel, sure it's tanky and in the right hands it can be deadly but when the Federal Assault Ship is only a few million credits more and the Vulture is several million credits less it really serves no purpose beyond being a ship to round out your collection. #1: Cobra Mk4 - It's totally useless. I've tried to like this ship, sure its got better hardpoint convergence than the Cobra Mk3. But its agility is so awful that if you're not at least using gimbals you'll have too hard of a time staying in the turns with your target, it holds plenty of cargo but its price point is within a couple hundred k of the Type 6 which holds more, and frankly if you want a small ship that flies like a large ship then the Viper Mk4 is actually the superior choice, and it was hard not to put the Mk4 viper on this list but at least it serves the purpose of being a cheaper alternative to the Lakon Diamondback Explorer where as the Cobra Mk4 is basically a Keelback that can't launch a fighter.

Honestly.. They were damned if they did damned if they didn't with the Cobra MkIV. If it was too much better than the Cobra MkIII people would complain about pay to win or something stupid, because it's an exclusive ship you can't get anymore and can't earn in game. They went the opposite route, and basically made a ship that is basically a lateral move in terms of effectiveness. Probably the better way to handle something many players will never have.
