When you're building a cargo ship it should be designed around maximizing volume while still meeting galactic-wide docking size standards... fill the pad, and still fit in the bay . The Type 7 fails at this... its foot print is built for the medium pad, but it's just a tiny bit too tall for the bay. Making it have to inefficiently use large pads. That's Lakon "functional design" in a nutshell for you.

The Cobra III is a great ship, nobody denies it. It's just an ugly one...and so avoidably so. Just give it a rear fairing to make it smoother, rather than making it look like an octagonal ship that was chopped in half.

I like Anaconda because it looks like what a fancy freighter would look like, and that's what Anaconda is. It's classier than the Lakon freighters, but under its skin it's still a big space truck and not a death dealing warship like the Corvette. I didn't play Eilte back in the day so it's not just nostalgia talking but I also really like the Cobra for its iconic look. It's got a flying saucer vibe going on and has that sort of flying-wing look that early atmospheric re-entry prototype ideas had in real life. Also the Sidewinder is adorable. It reminds me of the little single seater UFOs from the old X-Com. I do agree that Dropship is by far the ugliest piggy and the Type 10's spoiler is the dumbest thing ever.

i actually never crashed in 1300 hours of play. but if you refer to disconnects.... it happens a lot. i mean srsly a lot. in 2.3 it got kinda bad, and in 2.4 i gave up. opening a mission board, disconnect. opening passenger lounge, disconnect. Going into super cruise, disconnect. Jumping to other star system, disconnect. Coming out of hyperspace jump, disconnect. Dropping from super cruise approaching a station, disconnect. Going into glide, disconnect. Launching a SLF, disconnect. Absolutely doing nothing... you guessed it. disconnect. And im talking about private group and solo play. Open is worse...

we know why the Cobra is shaped this way - in the original elite, the game had to use ridiculiously low amounts of memory so it could work on those computers. The ships had to be wireframe polygons without anything protruding.

Yeah, the Cobra Mk III is the pony car of ships... affordable, sporty, and big hood you can put all sorts of fancy paint jobs on to further style it. What it needs is a ship kit to put a turbo on it... those are even better than spoilers in space! Suck that vacuum into the FSD for increased performance!

1. Type-7 Transporter. Obviously inspired by the real-life Super Guppy. Which wasn't exactly a looker, either. 2. Type-10 Defender. It could have been merely ugly, but the spoiler elevates it into a true monstrosity. 3. Anaconda. Is it good at everything you'd want it to be good at? Yes. Is it terrible to look at? Also yes. 4. Beluga Liner. Not a fan of any of the Saud Kruger yachts in space, but this thing is truly abominable. 5. Federal Dropship. A giant grey brick with some balsa wood taped to the sides.

The cobra design is from the original game when it was all you could fly. It looked good when all you had in terms of graphics was straight white lines. I wouldn't be surprised if it was put in as a nostalgia kick for all the 45 year old players

Re: FDS, FAS and FGS aerodynamics- seach "aircaft lifting body". Guess they made the wings thick and square to lower the polygon count. Engine power can overcome lack wing surface- search "Lockheed F-104" Funny video as usual- always enjoy your content.

Personally I think the Type-6 is the worst offender here, especially because it's lacking some parts. There is some plating missing on the left and right side of the ship, and said plating is sold on the cash shop. I don't think anyone would ever purchase customization options for that ship, but.. it's the intention that counts, and I see some really bad intentions when it comes to the Type-6.

While the Cobra can look good, most of the time it doesn't and while picking one up for a cheap exploration vessel and to grind wake scans, I just don't like using it. The Diamondback Scout is a far nicer ship for the job and to be in.

The reason most of the original ships look the way they look is because they had a very small amount of memory on the BBC micro, so they had to limit the number of surfaces, and mirror the designs all to save precious bytes - literally every single byte counted. Not really any excuse for the new ships though.

1:Anaconda: always hated it and always will, from the lose wires to the bottom of the ship. Add to that all those point things under the José and we're done. 2:Chieftan:looks like my dog taking a shit just like Yamiks said in his review. I can't sit inside the cockpit for more than 2 minute, I know it's Lakon that made it but that's still a stupid design for a cockpit of a combat ship. 3:Challenger: same reason as Chieftan. 4:Imperial Eagle: imo opinion the first Eagle looks way better. The Imperial version looks like some kind of shitty space boat. 5:Adder: for some reason reminds me of a frog. Don't ask why.

I want to point out, most of the ships you mentioned existed in some form in the original 1985 game. This explains the odd shape of the Cobra, for example, as the original game had nothing but simple wireframes to show the different ships, and for its time, those were top of the line graphics. Being that the Cobra is version 3, they’re simply continuing the same shape from the previous generation. I get you might understand that already, Yamiks, but maybe at least mention it next time you choose to mention ship shapes.
