It was just mess, because those people could not vote people out, it was not really competition "worth" something, just to keep them on the screen. I understand why they did it (keep people invested even if their favs got voted out), but there could have been more screen time for main game without the tokens mess.

Absolutely not. EoE by itself had a chance to work, but when combined with fire tokens, it makes it to where the optimal strategy is to get voted out as early as possible, then come back at Final 6 with an idol and only need to win one immunity challenge and one fire-making challenge to get to the end and win thanks to the relationships you made while on the edge.

Hot take: The Outcasts is not a bad twist. Assuming that all the voted out contestants are living under similar conditions as the players still in the game, the competition to get back into the game leaves the results in the hands of the players. Separately, the fact that they have to get voted back into the game makes the result closer to what survivor is all about. Outcasts is the best and fairest way to bring players back into the game. Far more than redemption island or edge of extinction.

It also helps that the Outcasts twist didn’t drop the two returnees right off at the endgame, unlike what could happen with RI and the Edge. Knowledge Is Power is probably one of the best case scenarios of an advantage creating amazing television in spite of itself. It has never successfully worked in its iterations through 41-43, but I would argue it produced some of the best or funniest moments of the New Era: the Yase 3's quick thinking to counter Liana, Omar's maneuver of Mike's trust to orchestrate Drea's blindside, the 43 cast playing advantage hot potato leading to Jesse inadvertently stealing Jeanine's idol. It's an awful advantage on paper, but MAN has it produced excellent TV.
@StickTrickDominoDude Жыл бұрын
KIP is a way better mechanic for TV moments than I would ever care to admit. You didn't even mention the very existence of the twist is what prompts a player like Jesse to acquire 2 idols that he didn't find. It's weird that they created an advantage that is much more satisfying to be beaten than it is to see played correctly.
@williamjones1419 Жыл бұрын
You're so right! KIP is a pure TV advantage and I love it. It also allows a whole other layer to the social game. Who do you tell and how do you use it? But it is purely for TV because you have to have so much dramatic irony as a viewer for anything revolving around KIP to make sense. I hope we see it again soon!

I would also argue the “fake” merge on Gabon made the end game better. If the Kota 4 just steamrolled it would be boring but by splitting the tribe in 2 and Susie flipping on Marcus we got a more messy yet unpredictable season.
@ashen_roses Жыл бұрын
Doesn't help that the great and powerful Marcus played things so badly in every aspect that it's downright questionable what happens in a world where they merge. Does he still brush Susie off? Does he still offer Susie up to Crystal in favor of sixth place. Doesn't help that generally all of the Onions were very stank very stale people and singlehandedly gave the win to a guy who was caught creeping on and perving on people because he was one of them and not one of The Evil Gang

I think redemption island also makes SoPa better. Probably not to the same extent as BvW, but still. The season is generally not regarded well largely due to the post-merge being a big pagonging, but Ozzy coming back in at the end really shakes things up. We also get "for revenge, basically", Christine, and "chuck e the cheese jokes" which are all highlights of the season. Obviously, if ozzy had gone on to win it would've felt quite unfair, but... he didnt, and we're left with a very satisfying win from sophie who needed to beat him in the FIC to win.
@lexa_power Жыл бұрын
I think narratively i would have actually been a lot more satisfied as a viewer if Ozzy won. I really felt like i didn’t know Sophie at all and i find her win very unsatisfying to watch. However, i still enjoyed that season somewhat because i found watching Coach lose very satisfying. Wish it would have been to someone who i got to know more or wish Sophie had a bigger edit, which is why that’s a bottom tier season and not one i can ever stomach a rewatch of for pleasure. But certainly a lot of good character moments that season and a lot of arcs (just not really for the winner sadly).
@midnalazuli79310 ай бұрын
There’s so many things that make the outcast twist work. 1. It’s in the theme of the season. Pirates who were left for dead by their own crews coming back to enact their revenge. Ever notice how Redemption Island and Edge of Extinction are only implemented in seasons with returning players? Obviously they only exist to give alpha male faves like Rob, Ozzy, and Joe extended screen time in case they get voted out. 2. Nothing is guaranteed. Unlike Redemption Island and Edge of Extinction, no one is for sure coming back. If the outcasts came last in the challenge, none of them would come back. If they came second, only one of them would come back as opposed to two. 3. Incidentally, Burton and Lill added a lot to the season, and so would have any of the other four pre-jurors (can’t say the same for Sean and Osten). And it’s narratively satisfying seeing the most socially ostracized first six boots of any season come back and defeat the people who literally “outcasted” them, and it’s especially fitting that Savage, the worst offender, was most screwed over and met his downfall at the hands of the people he mistreated.

I've said this before and I'll say it a thousand times, the edge of extinction made winners at war a better season. As a viewer I waited 20 years for that season and I wanted to see as much of all of them as possible. It would have been a real disappointment to have all the old school players just get voted off and not have a chance to really put a bow on their time playing the game and to give them their flowers.

Yeah...I remember way back during All-Stars, it just felt really bad to see your favorites go home early and just disappear forever. WaW finding a way to keep those players in the show was so much more satisfying, and led to some great character moments, not to mention the emotion of the family visits for everyone which really brought home the feeling of the Survivor community having become like a true family. When even the Exile Island players got to see their families, it was like the producers giving all those legends a gift of appreciation. Such a genuine feel good moment, in a show that sometimes works a bit too hard to manufacture them.

The thing about the bottle twist is that, due to federal regulations on gameshows, it always had to have existed before the season began filming in order to have occurred. My guess is that based on the placement of the bottle at F11, and the fact that the Mutiny was offered twice before and only accepted once, the producers probably thought that Mutiny would be taken up more than just once and by more than just 2 people. Heck, looking at the starting 4 tribes, it was probably planned as a season where jumping ship multiple times was supposed to be encouraged, and the bottle just exists as a way to either even the playing field before the merge, or mercy kill the minority tribe after they had all their tribemates and supplies jump ship.

Some of my picks. -The swap: China An incredibly unbalanced swap that should screwed over Aaron, James, and Todd, yet the latter two used this to their advantage to get possession of both idols. This also led to the most memorable moment in the season, which was James being blindsided with both idols in his pocket. -Idol Nullifier: David vs Goliath Normally a twist that can only hurt the underdogs and enable pagongings, yet the Davids actually found a way to use this to turn the tables. -Edge of Extinction: Winners at War An unbalanced twist that actually rewards being voted out early, but it also allowed almost every player to get a healthy chunk of screen time, which is especially great for a legands season like this. This twist would’ve been frustrating if it took away Tony’s win, but having Natalie present a challenge to him without ultimately winning did make the endgame more exciting, when it otherwise was starting to wind down. The Extortion: Winners at War An unfair burden that almost ruined the biggest move of the season, but the fact that Tony successfully paid the extortion was an extra feather in his cap and made his performance that episode all the more impressive.

I have never been a fan of anybody coming back into the game once they have been voted out of it. The votes should always mean something. That is the main reason I detest fire making at final 4. It negates the whole idea of voting someone out of your tribe. I really disliked Edge of Extinction the most. I think the only way I would have hated it less was if they had just devoted an entire episode to the players on the Edge while they competed in a mini fast paced version of the game. They could have had a series of group/individual challenges with immediate vote offs and the last person standing gets back in the game. This way it isn’t just people doing nothing for weeks on end. Plus, it would mean that the returning player would have some blood on their hands from people they voted off the Edge.

The Outcast twist is definitely the best example. It's on theme, and Pearl Islands (a virtually perfect season) wouldn't be the same without it. "Without it, it would have just been another Panama." That's a bad thing? Being "another" of one of the best seasons the show has ever had? The bottle twist was unfair producer intervention and I 100% believe the conspiracy that if Aitu had lost, the bottle would have cancelled the tribal and merged them at 11.

I think EoE on his first season was good. We had the Reem storyline, the comeback of Rick Devens who became a fan favorite and spiced the season when it was getting boring.. and honnestly : did the Chris win was legitimate ? no. Did his comeback provide the most epic end game of any season ? yes. For WaW, I think EoE was too much and don't provide as much entertaining story line as s38

Yeah no the Bottle Twist ruined Cook Islands for me. I highly doubt the producers would’ve given Aitu the bottle if they lost. And the Aitu 4 was one of the most boring and sanctimonious alliances of all time. It’s the most overrated season.

I have an idea for a Survivor twist. You have 2 tribes say Yellow buffs and Blue buffs. You have a tribal immunity challenge. Jeff says there's a twist that'll I'll share after the challenge (challenge is done around dusk). After the challenge, Jeff reads the note it's a tribe swap. The winning buff color wins immunity and everyone who draws the losing tribes buff color is a loser. With no time to talk Jeff says we are headed straight to tribal council giving no one time to scramble if they got swap screwed.

That's just similar to the hourglass thing in a way though. If a person won immunity they shouldn't have it taken away from them because of a twist they had no way to prepare for. It's just random then.

Or, get this. It’s the merge except it’s not. We split into two tribes and run an immunity challenge, except two players don’t compete. After one team wins immunity, they choose to send one of the players that didn’t compete to exile. They then get the option to reverse the entire outcome by, I don’t know, smashing some kind of symbolic item (perhaps an hourglass). Now they’re safe as well as the losing team and the winning team is vulnerable for elimination.

That's basically what happened in Survivor Fiji, which resulted in the swap screw to end all swap screws #bringbackmichelleyi

I feel Pearl Islands would have been a bit more thematically appealing without the outcast twist, having Drake go down as the tribe that sunk after throwing a challenge and keeping an outsider in Shawn Morgan were the serious underdogs for the entire season, meanwhile Drake was insistent on crumbling at the seams, still a good season but still

I couldn't disagree more. Pearl Islands is much better thematically because of the Outcast twist.

This is one of the Survivor mysteries to me: why do I keep hearing that the Aitu Four were "so much more likeable than the other tribe"? Becky and Sundra were nice but didn't make fun TV and Ozzy was arrogant and spiteful. On the other side, there wasn't any big toxic villainy to write about either. I always thought Parvati, Candice and Penner were fun. I feel like we have this narrative of "underdogs = better" drilled into our heads in this case.

I'm actually going out on a limb saying that Pearl Islands is one of the worst seasons BECAUSE of that outcast twist. I actually thought the season was going great until that stupid twist brought back Burton and Lil, which I could not stand either of them at all. I feel that the season would've been 10 times better had that twist never happened, and that's my true honest opinion.

It would’ve just been a boring Andrew Savage steamroll. Morgan was not a fun tribe to watch at all.

You counted casting themes as twists, and also had a Cook Islands twist on the list, but you didn't include the racial casting of Cook Islands?

They really should have done redemption island for San Juan Del Sur. The “hero duels” were pretty lame
