And for the track you can disable it. Or maybe it's just BMW S1000XR had all of this features implemented nicely :D

When you start talking to cruiser riders and hear their... opinions... on how brakes work and hear from them about why you should ONLY ever use the rear brake, it actually makes a lot of sense that many big bikes had linked brakes where the rear brake pedal also did some amount of front braking, basically just to help save idiots from themselves. I believe there were even quite a few accident statistics to back up that a good percentage of motorcycle accidents happened when a rider ONLY applied the rear brake and plowed into something because they simply didn't use their primary brake. 5th gen Goldwings, VTX1800s, Concours 14, FJR1300, etc. were like this where the front brakes only activates the front brakes, but the rear brakes does some front braking as well. This isn't a bad thing for safety, especially if you are more used to driving a car where panic mode is just slam your right foot on the brake in an emergency and you might not react on the front brake lever as fast. I cant comment on the newer systems where both brakes controls operate both front and rear brakes, as I havent used them yet.
@Joyride149-120 күн бұрын
Not an expert here. I have only ridden a cruiser a handful of times. I was a sport bike rider but on a TDY I did not have a vehicle, my friend let me use his cruiser, very different breaking techniques. I learned that real fast, almost dumped it when the front tire slid. I have never had a bike with either linked or ABS, I think they would be useful on a cruiser, not sure about the linked brakes for a spot bike though. Going straight, sure, hitting corners at speed while leaning... I guess you would have to get used to it. I would say I would never want linked brakes without ABS.

Combined Braking is mandatory in many countries, including being part of the EURO 4/5/6 standards. I don't know what it like is the US/Canada, but over here (UK) it doesn't apply equal pressure/braking to both wheels irrespective of which brake was activated - it's a graded response, with the activated brake taking most of the control unless heavy braking is required. At very slow speeds, or parking type manoeuvres I haven't ever noticed one brake interfere with the one I am using.

Blindspot detection, your left and right mirrors, both on the motorcycle and a car should be set so they show you your Blindspot. That’s why you have two mirrors on both sides of a vehicle. Then you just need to move your head a little bit to the left or the right to see directly behind you and on the car, you just use the center mirror. and even when you change lanes on a bike, you literally just need to kind of move your shoulders to one side or the other and then you can see a little more of that Blindspot, which remove the necessity to turn all the way and look and take your eyes off the front.

This goes doubly so for anything/one that says "mount your phone on your handlebars". Please don't. Keyless Ignition: I had this on a rental bike that was identical to mine except for Keyless Ignition and Quickshifter. I agree that it offers no value because I still needed the mechanical key to open the BMW panniers. I press it once to turn off the ignition and then press and hold it to lock the forks. Half the time I did not hold it long enough to lock and, instead, the ignition came on again. Using a keyed ignition to turn off and lock was faster. Blind Spot Detection: You're right except I occasionally start to move over before I finish a head check. Totally my fault but traffic changes fast and I am not perfect. Smartphone connectivity: The guy who rear-ended me claimed I slammed on my brakes. I called up the ride data and played it for the cop to prove I was not braking at all! The dude got a ticket. I also like that I can look at my phone to see if the tires need air and how many more miles left in the tank. Quickshifter: On a BMW F900XR, the quickshifter is not smooth. I am smoother doing a clutchless shift with a well-timed throttle blip.

certain harley models are keyless, and have been for years. no fob, no key, just turn it on, fire it up, and ride off. my 87 shadow used a key, left side, under your leg, near the battery. the problem with a key setup like that is. i've seen guys with a large or huge key chain, full of keys, have the key break off in the ignition switch. if you ride, put your house keys in your pocket, keep your motorcycle key single, and lonesome. i always keep a spare key hidden on the bike some where.

@DR-pu5hmАй бұрын
The only thing I think is bad is adaptive cruise control. everything else is awesome honestly. I dont use smartphone connectivity but I know plenty of people that do. Keyless fobs are no less secure than keys- most manufacturers only have 10-20 pin combos for their bike Combined braking is literally never bad unless you are trying to do burnouts Why even complain about quick shifters? 90% of the time they are so nice to have, the other 10% just dont use it. Blind spot detection is nice to have. You should not rely on it alone- but it can just help just that tiny extra bit. If it saves one rider- it was worth it.
@RahulKumar-up9fbАй бұрын
Agree with most of it, but I've used blind spot detection and I find it useful. India's traffic is a chaos and people are flying around on bikes, scooters and cars on the road and it sometimes shows me when someone suddenly pops up in my blind spot. But in a flowing traffic like on the highway, it's kinda pointless.

@swilson42Ай бұрын
Have to completely disagree on keyless ignition. You raise valid points, but are mostly exaggerating the cost side of things. Maybe dealer only options are overpriced, but I added keyless to my 07 GSXR for $300 and an extra fob was $50. More than a key, sure, but far less than the recovery cost of a stolen bike. With the factory ignition, my bike was stolen twice. Traditional ignitions on bikes are trivial to bypass. From screwdrivers (the first theft) to simply unplugging them (the second theft) because you can see and reach the plug while standing next to the bike. My keyless system doesn’t attach to the factory plug, so it’s not obvious to find or bypass when you’re a thief with a few minutes to figure it out. Recovery was a fluke the first time, but I added GPS to my bike after the first theft and that’s what got it back the second time. I have now seen on camera my keyless system thwart two additional theft attempts. The old ignition is still in place in my install, it’s just a dummy, so it wastes time. And who would assume a keyless ignition on an 07 GSXR, especially when they can see the expected ignition right there? When my keyless system dies, that one day might be annoying, but for less than $500 I’ll be back up and running for another however many years. Small price to pay for the added theft deterrent. Of course it’s not perfect, the mafia could still just haul it away, but that’s not the thief I’m dealing with. Side note, gas tank locks are a joke. Got rid of mine the day I bought the bike. Never once had anyone steal gas. The entire bike was stolen twice, but for some reason nobody has seen the hidden value of the 1 or 2 gallons of gas I leave unlocked. 🤷♂️ can’t believe nobody is clawing after the $2-$8 of value there… 🙄

Ya know you say that about the key fob, but my 2013 electraglide ultra limited has 72,000+ miles and I love having it. I’ve never once changed a battery in 10 years and it gives me much more antitheft confidence. I can hot wire dam near any sport bike in minutes. I wouldn’t know where to begin stealing a key fob bike aside from syncing a new key or loading on a trailer lol. I HATE linked brakes and every day I think about bypassing my Harley’s linked braking system

On Harleys you can enter a PIN-code if your FOB is lost, which is pretty nice. I used it when my FOB had run out of battery. So I think that this should be a consideration when buying a bike with keyless ignition. If you risk getting stranded if you lose your FOB or the battery runs out: Don't buy it! Murphys law! IWhat really suprised me, is that something as important as the FOB was not bike-specific on a serious brand like Kawasaki. On Harley touring bikes, the keys for the saddlebags are known for not being unique for each bike. Ridiculus! Having adaptive cruise control is silly, if you don't have an automatic transmission, whether it is a car or a bike. Blind spot detection is fine, wheter it is a car or bike - as long as people don't rely on it instead of turning their heads! It's only an aid.

Some of us have hardware and can't do head checks. That being said... CONVEX MIRRORS ARE CHEAP! Also that little light doesn't look behind you and factor in a vehicle's closing speed. In a dynamic situation, you don't just need to know where a vehicle is, you also need to know where a vehicle WILL BE. Had a 4-wheeler make the mistake of relying on that little light. He broke my 19yr streak of never having an accident in a truck! HE ADMITTED TO RELYING ON THAT LIGHT. He was going 50mph from a left hand merge and I was doing 60. He started over and I couldn't back it down fast enough (shoulder had to much overgrowth) and he tagged my front bumper & fender. 3 more feet and I could've avoided him, OR, now hear me out, he waited until I passed or sped up before changing lanes!

My takes on these: 1. As long as a key can still be used as a backup (like in my car), then it's a nice convenience, but not a major selling point. Without the backup, its a big issue. 2. This is definitely the most over-hyped feature in this list. It's actually a major ANTI-selling point to me. Why? Because you bet through connecting to your smartphone it'll be selling your spirited riding data to insurers and governments. There is pretty much nothing good about such a feature either. 3 and 4. Nice to have but definitely non selling point features. 5. If done right, it can be a pretty good selling point. If not, just ignore it. 6. Another anti-feature. I enjoy the flexibility of unlinked breaks. 7. Kinda unnecessary but also isn't gonna hurt as long as the nannies can be turned off.

You know, the quick shifter on the 8R isn't bad on the downs once things get broken in a bit more. Seemed like around the 1k mile mark I noticed the quick shifter getting much better on both up and downs. I would suggest during break in, use it a few times on the up, but as you rack up the miles and get some fresh fluids in you'll find it get even better. It's still not perfect on the downs, and it does feel like you really gotta be firm with the down shift.
