In my opinion everyone should be able to use whatever they want. That’s the case in rowing. You can just go out an buy the equipment you want (excluding paint jobs, custom crew kits). The only thing I can think of is the oar power meter. Professionals use it maybe 4 times a year and basically everything is measured by 500m split times. OK, I need help understanding. I believe you said that the mavic spokes had an airfoil shape, the front being wider than the tail. My understanding is that the wheel goes round, so at some point in the rotation, the trailing edge becomes the leading edge. So what, again, are the benefits of the airfoil spokes? Thanks so much.
@Mattsretiring3 жыл бұрын
At the top of the spin it is doing TWICE the speed of whatever the forward momentum is. At the bottom (next to the track) it is reversed. The aero shape is therefore important at the top. The overall shape of the wheel is also important in cross wind stability which isn't an issue on the track. So the fastest track wheel isn't necessarily going to be the fastest on the road
@perryvath76173 жыл бұрын
The bottom of a wheel isn’t moving at all; otherwise there would be no traction.
@jonathanzappala3 жыл бұрын
There are two kinds wheel of drag, translational (hope I have the right word) into the wind, and rotational. If you spin a wheel with low resistance bearings in a stand it slows down because it has rotational drag rotating through the air. A disc wheel will spin for ages because it’s rotational drag is very low compared to a spoked wheel.

Would it be entirely unreasonable to have restricted-tech and open-tech divisions, like a Madison where everyone's on the same bike and another Madison where they can pick their bikes? Or specific events that require all the same bike, while others don't, like Keirin sticking with all the same bike but Madison allowing choice? I don't see why we have to limit ourselves to just one or the other. Both paradigms have pros and cons, so I don't see why we couldn't have a mix.
