I watched the present day Top Gear and tried to like it more, but it’s just an ordinary car program without these three. They are trying their best, but the banter isn’t the same and the silliness is nowhere nearly as good.

@@Cygnus0lor something different about grand tour though, it never grew on me as much as their top gear years. I didn't like the colours they had in the beginning and them loosing the "documentary-style" in favor of filming 4k. And for some reason the banter didn't seem as genuine and a lot of the jokes felt wooden. Also the script with grand tour is way more obvious and its storytelling often ill paced and clunky. It's weird how none of the grand tour specials can compare to the top gear specials (asides the India one -which wasn't great). Also conversation street felt as genuine as american stand up comedy, they made the worst bit of tg even worse (star in average priced car -> celebrity f-off) and got rid off the challenges entirely. Which made some of the most iconic moment of the trio (e.g. James listening to techno, Clarksons architectural digest citroen). I feel like the restrictions of the BBC and their financial limits helped their creativity and that they are overwhelmed with their possibilities on amazon.

Indeed. A friend of mine managed to eventually get tickets to the audience in about 2008 - albeit stood at the back - and said most of the laughing you hear on TV is dubbed afterwards. When you think about it, unless you’re stood at the front which was always reserved for the best looking women, you were basically standing around watching a conversation on TV screens in the distance.
