@@dakota9821 in my experience of American roads... that's like 80%of the roads. My Fiancée used to commute for over an hour each way and worked late shifts. She kept almost falling asleep at the wheel because the roads are so straight and the biggest bend she's be on that wasn't a 90° turn down small streets (which are much longer than most British streets) was a slight bend that was as straight as a bend could get

As for the FAIL Blog photo, that was on a highway in Cornwall, England in 2006. Huge numbers of drivers were descending on the region for a music festival, and officials recognized that a 2-mile passing lane would actually worsen traffic with the heavy load. It may sound barmy but in fact it makes a lot of sense because, if it was left open, traffic from the two lanes would have to merge into one at the top. This causes a lot of aggro and a lot of stopping and starting which has been shown to delay traffic even more.

I've been to that Secret Nuclear Bunker, for context it's actually a museum in Nantwich and it shows how the government would of operated if the cold war became hot and England was hit with a Nuclear strike, what's funny is for many decades following the cold war no one knew that bunker was even there until the 90s (it was built in the 50s) the government gave the land back to the family who originally owned it cause it was clear the bunker wasn't needed, and it's still open today, it's very interesting but also creepy since it makes you think "what if this was the place you'd have to live to try to keep the country going if the nukes dropped back then?"

@@michaelkowal3230 Nope. The blind spot is an area which you can’t see from using your mirrors. Usually over your right shoulder in a standard right hand drive European market car. This comment is pretty dumb as 90% of road users can check their blind spot whilst driving and are encouraged to when on a driving test whenever moving off or joining an A road. The only people who can’t check a blind spot are HGV drivers as they have so many - 2 meters in front of the truck is a blind spot, anywhere immediately under the cab doors, anywhere down the sides of the truck within close proximity are all blind spots. It’s actually quite scary that so many people think that checking a blind spot in a car is impossible.

Ste Cork I figured that must be, in the states we have the same thing but a different shade of brown for tourist/historic sites. Our city councils are crazy about signs too, I literally passed a construction zone in a typical 65mph zone that said, sign not in use. One of four northbound lanes blocked with bright orange barrels, no workers have been there in over a week and we are supposed to reduce speed to 55. Speeding fines here in construction zones automatically double. Going the usual 65 could earn you a $300-$400 USD fine PLUS your insurance goes up or you can pay double the fine if you don't have any points and pay 800 dollars... I'd have to scrap my 96' Camry to pay for that cause I don't think I'd get a thousand for it selling

In my home town theres a sign indicating that the speed limit of 50 mph, an increase from 30 mph. On its own this would be fine, but it comes less than 100 yards before a stop sign. Across from the stop the speed drops back to 30 mph. TLDR: speed limit increases before stop sign and then decreases after it.

This always reminds me of going to visit my uncle in Munster Germany when he was there with the army in the late 80's, me mum and my Grandparents, were driving down the road one day and my Grandad in the front passenger seat was looking at things, a sign went by that said Ausfahrt (exit?). In Texas, most bridges have a sign that says "Bridge May Ice In Cold Weather" They used to say "Watch For Ice On Bridge", but they changed it becasue it is almost never cold enough to ice on the bridges. The story goes that a Texas Rep's daughter slowed way down to watch for ice on the bridge in the middle of summer with him in the car right after she learned to drive.

They renamed a highway near me in 1997, what had been the Interboro Parkway, after baseball legend Jackie Robinson. It was done as part of the 50th anniversary of Robinson breaking the baseball color barrier. He'd lived in the area during and after his playing days and is buried in one of the cemeteries next to the highway. The put a sign just before the point "The Jackie" breaks off from another highway, telling people about the rename. And left it there. For at least 10 years. Until someone slammed into it and knocked it over. But my personal favorites are the useless directional signs that dot Long Island. Everything that goes westbound just says "New York", referring to New York City, which those living out in the suburban sections of the Island have to go through to get anywhere by road. You come to a point where you can move from one East-West highway to another, the signs just give you the choice of "New York" or "New York". What they could at the very least do is list where that road leads eventually. One side should say "New York-LaGuardia Airport-RFK Triboro bridge-" and the other say "New York-Midtown Tunnel"

In Houston, TX we have road signs year round that say "Bridge may ice in cold weather". So that's like one day every ten years or so. The rest of the time I can't even keep ice in my tea

My secondary school spent at least a thousand pounds on signs to show off its boring name with. It had one by the main gate. Now it has a slightly bigger one instead, as well as one by the car park, and on the back of the building. That last one is particularly stupid for three reasons. 1 - It has no info, just the school logo and name. 2 - It's on the back of the school, so no-one standing in front of the school can see it. 3 - There are trees between it and the nearby roads, so no-one standing behind the the school can see it either.

Very often happens this - some leader of something (school in this case) have some money to spend - go and hire company which is owned by someone related/friend/whoever and give them some work to do, often overpriced. In that way he's doing con and helping to someone. Very possibly he receives some of that easy earned money back to his personal pocket. Sad but very common.
