How would you know how it was to be young in any other decade? everyone who ever lived thinks the time they were young in was best. It's being young that's magical, not the era you're young. The 80s were pretty grim if you look at them honestly. It's why the music was so vibrant - so much of the rest of the world was so awful and it was a form of escapism.

@@zeddeka Pointless and snarky response. I think the eighties is when Thatcher destroyed the country and we are still living through the consequences today. Many would agree but others would not. It is a matter of opinion and interpretation. There were other things that were, arguably, better in the eighties than other decades, again it is down to people's experiences and views.

@@eightiesmusic1984Yes! The destroyer of our future ‘Thatcher’ but most comments here are from people who were teenagers at the time. Too many other more positive distractions than politics and that’s what people remember. YES! A f*cking amazing time to be young enough to be a witness to what we lost in the fire before it burnt.

Tragic to see this today upon hearing of the death of Janice Long. I was 15 in 1985 and obsessed with music, and still am, time permitting. She was a great presenter and her warmth shone through in all of her work. The vibrancy of her contributions to TOTP struck me when I watched this retrospective programme and it is even more apposite in the light of her sad passing. RIP.

I came across this today for the first time because i was reminiscing about the good ole days in England and this particular year was a favorite of mine. I had left school,gone to college, drinking in the pubs , going to lots of parties and having so much fun. Life was so good and all i want to do is to be able to go back to that time and live it all again. I moved to Canada in 1999 and yes there have been some very special times, the birth of my Son being at the top of my list however, nothing will ever be as good as it was back then. Two of my long-term favourite albums came out in this year. While neither of them had "hits" at the time, they both contained classics that are absolute bangers. August saw the Head On The Door by The Cure with In-Between Days & Close To Me October saw Love by The Cult released, with Rain and She Sells Sanctuary. Both albums also contain non-singles that are just as good now, some 37 years hence

Yes, bought them both!! Saw the Cult at Cardiff Uni...came away from the mosh pit with bruises in places I didn't know I had! The Waterboys' "This is the Sea" is also a favourite album of mine from that year.

You sound exactly like my grandparents back in the 80s saying how miserable our generation was compared to theirs. It's amazing how some people get so unpleasant to the young as they get older. The 80s were actually a pretty horrible decade for the young in many ways. I think it's incredibly patronising, and often incorrect, yo imply today's young somehow "missed something" by not being in the post industrial greyness of the 80s

In my humble opinion everyone of us has his own favorite decade of music, mostly in the time of growing up, first attempts and falling in love with girls and so on…. So I had the best memories with beat music, flower power, Easy Rider and Woodstock…. The youth was our best time, wasn‘t it ?

... Yet absolutely no mention of it or her genius! (Okay, 29:38-30:28 - but that was just an instrumental section from "Cloudbusting".) However, we heard lots of opinions from Pete Waterman... "The Story of 1985"??? I suspect you've come to your own conclusions, Carol!

I was 19, in Blackpool and all I know is everyone I knew, and I had money in their pocket and loved it. My dad bought his council house for £8,000. I'm not ignoring the misery of other towns under the Thatcher years, I'm just stating it wasn't doom and gloom for everyone. I loved it, including all the diverse music. I love pop, go sue me :)

Bonnie Tyler WOW, still looking great with an amazing voice . Anyone under the age of 30 reading this go back to any year in the 80's, turn the volume up and enjoy. We all looked daft in our outfits most of us could not dance to save ourselves. One thing sticks out, we didn't care all we did was have a great CRAIC. To all of the artists, dj's, sound people, back stage staff and roadies all of you helped make the 80's the best time. Thank You :}

I remember when it mattered if your favourite band appeared on top of the pop's, I'm glad to say I got to see iron maiden get to number one with bring your daughter to the slaughter, and at the same time anthrax were in the top 20 I think with got the time. It's crazy how much time has changed the way music reaches people.

Meanwhile, in South Africa, European acts were making inroads. The Italodiscotastic Silver Pozzoli was topping the chart. Alphaville and Modern Talking became two of the bigger acts on radio and we first saw Sandra, who went on to outsell Madonna in the sunny republic. Billy Ocean's "Loverboy" was the country's top-selling single of the year.

Not really. The vast majority of it was utterly tedious. So many people have forgotten what life was actually like. They seem to imagine they lived in Top of the Pops. It was the era of utter boredom for the most part. Kids TV had shows like "Why Don't You" were specifically marketed to give kids ideas on something to do to alleviate the utter tedium. Remember the theme tune? "Why don't you just switch off your television set and go out and do something less boring instead?"
