7.62NATO mate. Back in the 70s when our mob were converting to 5.56 I draw my line in the sand and left the service uttering the words "I'm not putting my life at risk carrying a rabbit gun". We were initially issued with the FN designed SLR, a relatively heavy rifle but very reliable and accurate. Then they got us to testfire the M16 in 5.56, and, well, what a disgrace (imo). Wouldn't accurately penetrate a privet hedge or go through a small tree, would be deflected by a leaf or small branch. So this old fart, handed in his gear, signed the discharge papers and walked away uttering the words previously noted. Our CO was really pissed, he lost his #1 marksman. Still to this day my opinion hasn't changed. 5.56 is nothing more than a rabbit round and puts lives at risk in a battle scenario. Thanks for posting, you had me valve bouncing at 5am, 🤣🤣🤣

At the time of your resignation, when the 5.56 was mainly relegated to a 55 grn fmj round, I think you were correct. Your comments got me thinking (and filming) some 5.56 with a better bullet selection vs some really good .308... Will post the vid soon. Thanks.

Nope, 7.62X39 was designed to engage targets at 400 meters from a 20" carbine barrel. 16" barrel engagement range is 300 meters, with 400 meters being pushed into effective range. The 200 meter engagement range was a 7.62X25 round fired from of PPSha smg.

Great video sir. This year i have switched from bolt action to the LR308 and AR15 platforms. I have now switched into the 6.mm calibers.

Great video as always. I guess the 6.8 in the NGSW is supposed to address distance, weight, and lethality, although there’s already controversy on those topics, and a concern about recoil. I’ve always found it interesting (and exasperating) that the 5.56 runs the gamut between being an awesome short and medium military round (and there’s lots of evidence that it does take the enemy down, despite anecdotal stories of soldiers taking several hits and just continuing to fight on) and on the other hand being nothing more than a small varmint round! Have we really kept it around for 60 years just because of politics, with no concern for effectiveness? I have a tongue-in-cheeek video on my channel where I talk about 5.56 being called a “glorified .22.” I fire a round which destroys a watermelon AFTER passing through a 1/4 inch steel plate! An enemy target is most likely not walking away from that. Not to mention that with almost no recoil, military accuracy went up…a hit with a small 5.56 is probably better than a miss with a .308!
