The 70's back when artists actually sung their songs and had talent because if you didn't you didn't last. Lots of these oldies but goodies still performing and just as great as they were back in the day.

I was 9 in 1977. What amazes me with this list is that even the “bad” songs are good. I put bad in quotes because even the songs that I didn’t like back then are good. This was back when my mom had her stereo in the living room. Music back then was more of a shared experience as opposed to what most people do now, which is listening to music on headphones.

Top 40 radio would play all types of music back then, as this compilation shows. Good times for music.
@treojoe10773 жыл бұрын
That's mostly true. But there were certain genres that they didn't play unless the record companies promoted the hell out of them and even then they stayed away from certain bands and genres. We had a couple album rock stations that played the stuff that Top 40 AM wouldn't play (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, etc.). But even those stations didn't play anything that was not considered main stream. One of them had a show that aired midnight on Saturdays that played "underground" or just basically non main stream bands and promoted concert tours, etc.. If not for them I would not have heard Iggy Pop, Sex Pistols, Ramones or NY Dolls, etc. They even played Blondie and tracks from Rocky Horror and Talking Heads long before they were picked up by mainstream or Top 40 radio. That is where I heard about The Rocky Horror Picture Show (midnight movie) that played at the Kent State Campus Theater. Around 1979 or 80 the show was renamed something like "New Wave Theater" or something similar. Those years were the best for music in my opinion and I really miss it.

Bee gees practically owned 1977 with 'Night Fever', 'Stayin alive', 'How Deep is you're love' which were all big #1's then they wrote brother Andy Gibb's songs 'I just want to be you're everything' and 'Love is thicker then water' which both went to number 1, and 'If I can't have you' which Yevon Ellimon took to number 1, and 'Emotion' which Samantha Sang took to #3, and also another top 40 hit 'More then a woman' sung by Tavares. I think this feat was out done only by the Beatles in 1964.
@rgrndu4 жыл бұрын
That was ‘78 for most of the songs you mentioned. You forgot Grease by Frankie Valli & Shadow Dancing by Andy Gibb, both No. 1 hits.
@larrycj43823 жыл бұрын
Am not sure if the Billboard chart was used here. Billboard's rules for the year end chart changed since 1977, so they edited their original placings. As "How Deep Is You Love" had a chart run from 1977 to 1978, Billboard originally had it listed in the Top 10 of 1978 giving it full credit for its entire chart run and not listed in the Hot 100 of 1977 at all.
@larrycj43823 жыл бұрын
Today, Billboard uses different rules. Drake has broken many records. When he releases an album, Billboard credits each song as a single which is not right as this does not represent true Top 40 popularity. They should given him album credits. Not picking on Drake's sound, just how it is tabulated today

Nothing like being 17 with a new driver's license and hearing these songs for the first time. Another great year in music. Younger people are probably scratching their heads trying to figure why Debby Boone's song went to number one. It was huge, ubiquitous and moved people when it was released. When I found it in my mother's records and decided to give it a listen. I didn't realize when I first got the album that it was performed by singers imitating the orignals. It was soooo bad, especially "Evergreen," which was so off-key, it made my teeth hurt. Aaaah, good times.

I know what you mean , we're the same age. When I tell my son and his friends , that I paid $2.00 to see Star Wars at a matinee in the summer of 1977. They said , "You're old!" , lol!

1977, Graduating from High school and about to embark into the Abyss of Adulthood! Also known as the: "Get your &#$ out and get a real Job!" time! Folks, that was a most Difficult, but wonderful time back then, and those tunes we were blessed with then really helped to get myself, (and I'm sure a few others!) through some pretty Heavy decisions and life choices we as young Adults were faced with. Thanks for the Amazing trip down Memory lane. God bless the Super Spirit Class of '77✌🏻❤

6:40 I love that song that its on my phone's playlist. In fact a lot of the songs in that list are in my playlist that I listen everyday. 1977 and 1980 (my birth year) are my favorite years. A lot of these songs are still being aired on radios that I thought they are modern.

Im a little older 1977, my last yr in the United States Marine Corps. I was ready to get out and let my hair grow. Boy I let it grow down to my shoulders. Loved the music of 1977, to be honest I'd go back in minute and do 1977,over over and over again.
