In Newfoundland it’s impossible to find a box for any fords 10 to 15 years old there absolute rust buckets from our wonderful salt we use. I have a 05 f250 that looks like a banana and I’m looking at buying a 03 f350 7.3 dulley that will be getting a flat deck if bought because of rust issues. $3500 with 300,000 kms it runs and moves so hopefully it is a good choice for hauling a bit of wood and maybe pushing a bit of snow. Thanks for sharing your knowledge it will surely help me in my purchase

Great video, lots of good info. I've owned a 2001 7.3 for over 7yrs. With 166k miles. That has had some mods. I've done. Including a built trans. We mainly use it to pull a 13k 5th wheel south for the winter. It's a rust free truck. So I plan on keeping it till I die. A recent problem was the engine stalled . And restarted with a engine miss. It has a TS6 chip that has custom tunes. At first it showed a ICP 1280 code. That showed up on my bully dog, that is just used for gauges . That I checked out and was ok. In Harlingen Texas I found a shop that could read the codes . Because of the TS6 CHIP ,they could not access the PCM . They had to remove the chip and was able to pull codes and do a buzz test. No problems. Removing the chip cured the engine problem. I forgot how much different it was running without the chip. Brian at BTS is sending me a new chip. It has been a great experience dealing with a reputable business. Something you won't get on Amazon. I think my problem could be difficult to diagnose for someone that has not had a lot of experience on 7.3s . I've had a bad connection in the valve cover that acted the same way. That I found checking ex. Manifold temp. This time the temp was the same. Anyway FYI on possible chip problems.

you can keep these quieter by running shell rotella oil, the weak point on stock 7.3s is the 4r100 trans. Upgrade with a larger trans cooler and an aftermarket condenser fan to get longevity

No the real weak point on the 7.3s were the old E40D transmissions and little transmission coolers. a 4R100 has much better internals and parts and if you add a deep dish pan and a large trans cooler from a 6.0L Powerstroke 2.5x more surface area than the 7.3 Trans coolers.

We have a 2000 F-350 4X4 four door Dually Super Duty, Power stroke,. with a little over 200,000 on it. We bought is 11 years ago, we bought it from a local farmer that had towed a goose neck stock trailer which he almost never unhooked it., he just wanted a new Dodge . We paid 10,000$ for it.. The pick-up was super clean inside and out. The Pick-up had no exhaust, It ran great but it was just to loud. We bought the Banks exhaust with a muffler plus the Banks big air intake. Our engine builder Bob Cram (Ridgecrest CA) said we got a good deal, but to get rid to the bully dog set up, Bob said it will bite me. The pick-up had three gauges one trans temperature , turbo boost, and turbo temp. I hit a snow pole and it took my right dually fender off, to find a new or used one was out of the question . My wife found a 9'6" flat bed for 600$ with tool boxes under and two large tool boxes on top of the bed. I bought a sand blaster for the bed it came out like new. I added new LED light, and paint. We tow our 24' fifth wheel camp trailer, We have no problem climbing the large hills here in Northern Nevada.. We are in our late seventies , and just love the Super Duty . We have done most of all which Bill Hewitt has recommend, I enjoyed your talk about the two ford pick-ups..... Thank You !

My 2002 has been the best pickup ever. Besides heater core issues. It’s been perfect. Went to a bigger heater core piping and seems to have fixed my problem. It was caveating in the small pipe elbows to much pressure. Had to find bigger QD fittings but haven’t had an issue since. Thanks for the video I’m a late viewer.

Early 4r100 equipped trucks had torque converter issues. Primarily a 99 model year issue. Likely most have been replaced at this stage in the game. They were very noisy when bad...even noisier then the old 7.3 when at idle! So, they are pretty easy to spot. Lol

I am the original and only owner of my 2000 7.3 PS, 2x2 extended cab truck. The only repairs in 22 years and 182,000 miles so far has been the starter and alternator to which DB Electric was able to send what I needed, replaced the batteries a couple of times now. I did the brakes all the way around a couple years ago, I also did a SUPER coolant back flush because the 7.3s usually had a A LOT of casting sand in the block. I flushed it about 6 to 8 times over several days, put a new de-gas tank, belt all the hoses, added a water filter, put a NEW water pump and put the red extended life Chevron coolant. When I service the 4r100 trans I always 1...do it myself because there is a drain plug on the torque converter to drain it as waell as drain and remove the pan for a new MOTORCRAFT filter to be installed. The swing out cab doors will have the cable ends go bad, esay fix,...several guys here on YT show how to repair, and the metal cable repair parts are like $8 to $10 on ebay. Yup, this was a long right up, but this is EVERYTHING I can remember repairing in 22 years. I still have the original U-joints...original steering link and ball joints. And those things I said would get replaced in 3 years because there were no grease fittings...WELL I WAS WRONG. This has been and is a great truck.

I bought my 2000 F350 with 6 sp ZF6 manual brand new, been parked in my barn since. Put a GTr38 Garret Power-master turbo 4" straight back, custom 5 position tunes. Love the front leaf's and straight manual lockers. It actually has a much shorter turning radius than the wife's F150. The 99's had trans overheat issues, in 2000 they added the trans oil cooler. Yes, when it was 2 months old the cam sensor failed, thankfully under warranty.

Check for rust along the beds front beam just behind the cab, crawl under and take a good look. Next check for exhaust leaks around the turbo, shows up a suit on the fire wall. Inspect the spider for cracks at the flanged. When replacing turbo mount o-ring seal some mechanics will swap the turbo up pipe to turbo clamp with the spider to intercooler clamp this will crack the spider. The big clue is the v-band clamp that looks like a hose clamp will not be on the spider. Listen for turbo whine on acceleration, if you don't hear it there's trouble.

I have an 01 Excursion 73 we bought it was 75,000 miles on it. We’re just over 101,000 miles on it and I have probably put 12 camshaft positioning sensors in it. I took the time to clean the battery terminals very well, one day and had no shut off problems for a year. But I’m back into having it momentarily. Shut down while driving and usually towing a trailer. I’ve been told it might be electrical. A friend of mine cleaned out his fuel tank and said there was a bunch of crap in it. He cleaned it out and has not had it shut off on him in five years. I have a hydra chip in it for fuel economy. Curious if you have any ideas? Kyle

240,000 miles 2002 7.3 2wd I’ve had it for over 100,000 miles I had to put three grand into redoing the front end because of normal wear and tear that included a 2 inch leveling kit, normal matinence and new headers. It runs like a champ. I tow about 6000 pounds 4-5 times a month, and it’s constantly full of tools as it’s a work truck. If you find one of these trucks that has been respected that it’ll last year forever. Even if you have to dump 3 to 6 grand into a new front end or other basic maintenance issues you have after 150000 miles you’re basically getting a new truck at that point. That still has a longer life left in it compared to newer vehicles today.

Good video, thank you! Info on my 2000 RWD Excursion-174k, 10.5", limited slip differential. As far as I can see in my research. this is what all of the 2000 Excursions have. Also, this truck spent its first 15 years in Florida, so most of the coating on the frame is peeling off. I have pulled off as much of the loose coating as I can. Right or wrong, I do not want water to pool between the loose coating and the frame. The frame looks rusty but solid.

If you see a Super Duty with fender flairs like the one in the video, look behind them... probably rust! I wanted to put some on mine but I don’t even have anything to attach them to. VERY common on northern trucks. I live in Indiana. Also look for the rear diff cover to be seeping diff fluid, another very common issue. If it’s a northern truck, check your bed mounts. And like wade said. Definitely check where the dip stick goes into the oil pan. If it’s rusted or looks bad, you’re gonna have to pull the motor to replace the pan and fix the issue. It’s also not uncommon for the torque converter on a 4R100 to go at the 200,000 mile mark.

For TC ..Put a triple clutch billet in and keep rolling. Main thing that tears up 4R100 is heat. The cooler on these trucks are tiny. Change fluid every 30k if you tow a lot.

I am buying a 2003 Excursion with the 7.3l from my uncle. I have been working on it for a while and one issue I had found was the window and radio would stop working at random. They weren't getting any power at random when starting and driving and would turn on and off together. I found the problem after looking at all of the normal areas you would think the problem was. If anyone has this issue there is a shared relay behind the dash that can sometimes get moisture damage from bad windshield seals. Once replaced the problem stopped.

I had an 01 7.3, and absolutely loved it. Only had a couple things wrong with it, I did have my Overdrive light blinking at me, and had a small electrical problem with it. Turned out replacing the batteries fixed that problem. Although it was a heart wrenching sight when I first saw that light blinking, I was relieved when it was just the batteries. Also when I was at a complete stop, then accelerated, I had this clunk that came from what seemed the rear diff, I had it checked out and was told nothing was wrong. So I didn’t worry about it! Lol if anybody else has that problem and knows what it is, I’d love to hear what you have to say 😂 other than that, these trucks are solid.

Ive seen some trucks experience a clunk because of driveshaft slip yokes binding, and also leaf springs having a flat spot where the usually ride. When the axle torques on acceleration, it pops off the flat area, and makes a clunk. Just some ideas.
@straycat62
@straycat62 2 жыл бұрын
Check rear drive shaft slip yoke. It can bind. Remove the 4 8mm bolts at the rear most U-Joint and drop the drive shaft. You should be able to feel if it can slide in and out like that. If binding look up how to fix. Its easy to clip rear metal band on boot, grease splines and zip tie the boot back. Check the carrier bearing. They do get worn. Leaf spring idea below is interesting too.

What I find most guys with Diesels they up the power and try to pull big 5th wheels then get upset with the transmission burning out. You can't do both add power, and put lot of weight behind it unless you upgrade the transmission. SUV's like the Excursion less likely someone pulled a heavy trailer with it probably wasn't torn up.

I own a 1999 F250 7.3 and the issues have been minor, though sometimes it seems like they never end, I have to remind myself that the truck is 23 years old. Every issue I have been able to fix on my own, from transmission to electronics, and I'm certainly no mechanic, the issues just haven't been all that difficult to fix. My truck has 260,000 miles, original engine and turbo, and I can still hit 30 pounds of boost WOT. I also own a 2019 Nissan pathfinder, and that thing has been in the shop more than it's been in my driveway. Hell, that thing's at the shop now!!! For 23 years and 260,000 miles, it's a beast. I would say that most people can feel pretty comfortable purchasing a 7.3 turbo diesel. They don't make them like that anymore, that's for sure!!!
