Hello Rob, I'm new to drumming at the age of 62. My church let me sit behind a Yamaha Stage Studio kit about a year ago. Since then I've been through a little bit of hell working as a tradesman without transportation. That's over now. I watched several of your videos. They continue to give me the knowledge of what it will take for me to continue loving the drums. When I tell you that I literally felt the fear, joy, excitement, all at once every time I sat behind that kit, I MEAN IT. I don't have my own kit yet. I think I have a lot to learn about what my needs are at this time. Since I play piano also, it's a nice change to go back and forth. Your KZbin's on all the fundamentals are absolutely great. Things are starting to pick up for me again. Your KZbin on high end kits is awesome. This added some balance to my thinking. I'll be patron member soon. Catching up some bills that piled up first. Please KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING. THIS HAS MADE ME REMEMBER THAT IT IS ALRIGHT TO DREAM AGAIN. THIS LEARNING TO DO SOMETHING THAT I'VE NEVER DONE BEFORE IS ACTIVATING PARTS OF MY BRAIN OR SOMETHING. KEEP BREAKING EVERY PART THIS NEW LOVE DOWN. I NEED IT. PEACE

Great video Rob! Preach it! @18:00 you talk about a bigger stick. I had a teacher suggest to me to switch from a 7A to 2B about 12 years ago. I now use 2B for everything except combo jazz, then I use the erskine ride stick, but I don't feel that difference either. Rebound and looseness of grip is a BEAUTIFUL thing.

You literally fixed my weak hand (or, at least, put me on the right way). It's several months I'm trying to spot my weak hand problem without finding it. And you simply told me where I was wrong: my fulcrum was on the index instead of middle finger!!! Then I looked my "good" hand (the right one) and found that my fulcrum is actually on the middle. So, now I am working on switching the fulcrum on the middle finger on my weak hand too. Thank you so much!!! Peace.

With a looser grip the drums almost play themselves. I focus on the bounce and the looseness knowing if I get these two correct the drums are going to sound as good as they can. No chocking, no stiffness and the time always feels great.

Thank you Rob for your teaching. I've been playing for over 50 years and grip is always an aspect of reevaluation. I play with a loose grip and the disadvantage of that is dropping or losing the stick on occasion but other than that, the loose grip is just something that comes natural that I discovered early on in my playing. It's very intuitive to let the laws of physics do the work.

Just use gloves, theres heaps of types now that are designed to work with smart phones with camping etc. so they are super thin with a grippy surface. It stops you straining to hold sticks or fear dropping them and you can just relax while playing

I couldn't agree more. I've been playing for about 2 1/2 years and developed tennis elbow in my left arm. Without a doubt it's a result of gripping the stick too tight. It takes a conscious effort to stay loose, even when you know better. I love the note idea. I might just write it directly on the head. Thanks for validating the middle finger grip. It's always felt better to me but I would reluctantly force myself to go back to the index finger because that's what I was taught . THANK YOU.

Hey Rob I'm an old guy but I was a drummer from my teens through my 30s.I listened to everything you said and this looseness of the wrists is very important stuff. I'm 69 and I'm gonna ease on into playing again. This wrist movement is the reason why Wade Boggs could throw 100 mile an hour fast balls all day long and not get tired. I have held on to an old Frankenkit that I've dragged everywhere over the years but just for my own enjoyment I'm going to do this. Back in the day my chops were pretty good but now with your tips I know I'm going to be better.

Man, this was an awesome piece. My drum teacher always told me to lean back in order to be a bit less tense. The first time I tried traditional grip i used thumb and index... I never stopped since. A tip for tense drummers: try to frequently shift balance during practice in your right hands - lot easier than tricks😊

Mr. Brown, I’ve been practising and playing using your grip refinements outlined in this video! You know, loose grip with the lumber between the index and middle finger! It has added so much more control and refinement to my playing that I am flabbergasted! I mean, I still need to work on finger control of my left hand but, it feels so amazing that I just can’t go back to the thumb and index finger combination! Now I am experimenting with different stick sizes in order to get even more control! The Stephen gad signature sticks are great but kind of light! Anyhow I want to thank you dude you really help me reach a new level of performance! May your camels spit nothing but dates cheers… Keith

Hey Rob, great video, thank you for this! I try to maintain a loose grip but this is a great reminder that I need to do better. If I may offer one more reason for a loose grip...you will have more energy and endurance when you play shows if you have a loose grip. Set three or four is not a problem if everything is loose ! Tight grip = a lot of extra energy burned up for nothing and tiring out early in the evening.

Great lesson, and such an important subject. Some years ago I used to get very sweaty, slippy hands. So most of my gigs I ended up hanging onto the sticks grimly, choking the rebound, whole body really tense, exhausted by the end of a set. Tried lots of different things. Then saw Carter's gloves...tried them and bingo! Instant relaxation. Everything improved, just by taking away the focus on not losing the sticks. Much more relaxed grip, more confidence, better posture, better rebound control. Definitely going to try the middle finger fulcrum (I have a young friend who does it naturally). On another note, some time ago, you did an evaluation of the PST7s. You mentioned using the 20" light ride as a Crash or Crash/Ride with the medium set. One came up recently as an orphan, I bought it and it fits fantastically well. Thanks for that tip also!

This is really good - thank you so much. Been playing for years but this is the best lesson I've never been taught. Always known playing loose is better - but never probably considered how fundamentally vital it is and how it impacts on everything else. What you say about the 5B sticks really rings true - always really struggled with heavier sticks but I now realise I've just been using them in the wrong way! My problem with keeping loose though is probably nerves when performing.... so pleased I've discovered your channel..

I had problems with my hands because of holding my sticks so tight. I never thought about it, until a pro asked me, if I am a blacksmith with a hammer or what. He showed me how to properly use this loose grip with the middle finger as the fulcrum point. It worked great for me.

I concur, this is indeed 100% the most important drum lesson there is.Thanks Rob. And wow, you absolutely nailed it about using heavier sticks with a looser grip. Before I saw this video, I'd already made a conscious effort to loosen my grip, and then one day picked up some old but hardly used Vic Firth Rod Morgenstein sticks lying around, they're basically 2B. I normally use regular 5A. Anyway, I always found 5B's too cumbersome, let alone the weight of 2Bs. For years, the 2B's always felt like wielding Thor's hammer, one in each hand. But since changing my grip, I was surprised to notice that I'm now really comfortable with the 2Bs. I don't believe I got any physically stronger and I'm just an average built guy. It's the looseness of the grip that makes them feel much lighter. I've not gigged them yet but I practise with them at home, swapping between them and 5A's. Both feel very nice to use. The best reason for loose grip for me is more even time, less rushing (or dragging as well), particularly in fills. The loose grip makes it feel like my sticks are dancing on the drums rather than playing into them, it's so much nicer. Love your videos Rob, keep 'em coming!

I started drumming 3 months ago and can relate what you mentioned about hand injuries--the second joint of my L hand thumb (first finger) has baseline osteoarthritis---age related----but the added stress from too tight grip between first and second finger (aka--index or pointer finger) has been bothersome especially trying to work on tempo and stick control. More strength/tightness is not the answer----thanks for this video---loose grip seems key to progress.

Rob, love your lessons, man. All of the drills I’ve worked on the pads have dramatically improved my play on the kit. And quickly! Soft hands makes so much sense. Confession: I lifted weights for many years, right up until recently. Being in good shape for playing seems wise, but tight does not. I used to hear Buddy Rich was a black belt. Billy Cobham lifted weights in the army, and kept going after he left. But when I think of a lot of drummers, say Joe Morello, they are fantastic drummers but not exactly gym rats. I will try to find a balance that keeps me fit but does not tighten me up. Thanks again for fantastic lessons! Your teaching style is outstanding!

Hai Rob. Sorry to write spanish but this is the best way to say what I want.

Really helpful video! Do you have any videos or pictures that explain / show the middle finger fulcrum a little more closely? I’ve also been trying to shift my grip to the second finger, but the pressure point between me thumb and middle finger just doesn’t feel natural at all yet. So hoping to get a slightly better view and understanding of how your thumb and middle finger are placed and interacting.

( 1.5 yrs drumming) I have been playing using the fulcrum of the stick but I've noticed that some of the greats that I have been watching use the ends of the stick. It does seem that stick whips allot better with a loose grip at the end of the stick. I use 7B sticks and the weight on the fulcrum vs the ends feel similar. But having a loose grip at the end makes me nervous playing live because of stick drops. I know keeping the stick loose is important but it seems like the fulcrum spot is ditched in allot of awesome drummers

I work SO HARD at playing with a looser grip! I'm actually having soming ongoing problems with my right shoulder from playing too hard. When I watch videos of myself I do this shrug with my shoulders when I really start cooking but...it's painful. My problem now is CONTROL, it almost seems counterintuitive to hold your sticks really loose, even though I know you should. I just don't know what else to try technique wise. I started drumming years ago, picked up terrible habits, and now I've got try to undue YEARS WORTH OF INCORRECT MUSCLE MEMORY! 😓🥁💥💥💥💥
