Cebu is starting to get like Dumaguete. It is the second most populous province in the Philippines, but 9th largest island, and the most populated province in all of the Central Visayas. It is very small in land mass, only 135 miles long and 15 miles wide, yet 5 million people live here. 3 million people live in Cebu City alone. Starting to get that boxed in feeling, for me anyway, lots of traffic and total gridlock, at times. I have been to the Philippines 10 times to 8 different islands. I have spent some years living and traveling in other countries (20), and it is nice to be able to spread out a little. If you really want to get away from foreigners, if that is your goal, then Leyte, and Luzon north of Manila and Angeles City is where to go. When I traveled throughout Luzon, north of Angeles City, I never saw 1 foreigner at all, except in Baguio City, which of course, is also considered a tourist attraction. Other than that, Luzon is the largest island, has an international airports, excellent hospitals, and the people are just as beautiful and nice as anywhere in the Philippines.

Rob Julian. Negros is a big island. You go out of duma and you won't see foreigners. A few in Bacolod. Mostly integrated wealthy business foreigners. Nice island. I was up north in the sugar cane fields and saw whole families from the mountains cutting cane by hand. Owner on a horse. Like stepping back in time. Filthy work. Hellish conditions. A world away from Duma. Trust me the old Philippines is alive and well

I liked Valencia and Dauin a lot. Dumaguete was fun to explore by motorcycle but lots of traffic. Some good restaurants I enjoyed. Like Hayahay Treehouse bar, Casablanca, San Rival Pastries, Why Not nightclub was fun. Sidewalks very uneven like many places in Phil so use caution. I will go back but also want to check out Bohol & Siquohor, and drive up the west side of Negros and Talisay. Stayed also at Mike’s dive resort in Dauin, scuba lessons and say trips to Apo Island awesome. Exploring Valencia hot springs, and dirt farm roads on motorcycle was a blast. Renting in Valencia is the way to go.

Harry, I pulled the trigger and am in Duma now. Paul and Gio were the goto guys for me and honestly portrayed what I have seen so far in Cebu and Dumaguete. As soon as you get here there are plenty of expats to guide you along the way. I wouldn't recommend you go out to a provincial town right away. You'll need the faculties/infrastructure that a city can offer in the way of adjustment and adaptation. Just getting acclimated to the weather here can be a struggle and having local resources nearby for clothes, dermatologists or whatever is really beneficial. I had several bacterial infections from the water and who knows what else in the first 2 months in the PH and that's to be expected. It's a wildly different environment so take some time to get used to it. Duma is a fantastic place with a bit of everything.

I did see your earlier walks last year when it was in developement stage, the many lights are an added bonus too ! good you expressed the negatives along with the positives, I was though under the impression that the quality health care in Dumaguete was also a reason that the older ex-pat resided there , anyway 38 days b4 I touch down in Manila , looking forward to seeing people I know, playing pool , quality San Miguel Pale Pilsnin, lumpia ! lechon, adobo chicken/pork, babinkgka, helo helo, ube , mango shakes ! etc etc and maybe some busking ! safe travels Gio , cheers from N Z ( Aotearoa).

you were way too kind talking about Dumaguete. From the perspective of a visitor who has to stay in a downtown hotel in the city and always eat out at the "restaurants" there...the place is a dump...the available hotels , most are dumps, the streets are dusty, dirty , and filthy, restaurant service and variety is pessimal, and the ferry terminal sucks rocks too. Shopping is pessimal since many places are hot with no air conditioning. I cannot say anything good about Duma from a tourist visitor perspective...its just a stopover short stay to go on to somewhere nicer like Siquijor, Bohol, Cebu etc... Valencia is much better than Duma

The great big green lie - sustainable power ain't free. When NORECO generated the power and maintained the grid which supplied it to everyone, it was more reliable and the price was stable. Now there is this new grid corporation maintaining the system which is now not as reliable and it costs more.

Thank you for the video. I'm from Zamboanguita. During my college days in Dumaguete, the city was quiet. If not your video I wouldn't know how the boulevard looks like now. I live in Washington State for 37 years, not been home for five yrs now.

Your advice re: Amazi Homestay Hotel was spot on. Nice, clean, centrally located, even somewhat unique design. Heck, the owner even gave us a ride to the airport at 6am for free! Thanks again.

You want to see a real tourist industry. Foriegners bringing wives and girlfriends for recreation. Its the surfing island down south. Surigow. ( miss spelt) tons of tourist. Land prices very high. Very different vibe from dumagette. Duma will be a thing of the past soon

Thanks for this video! A few months ago I was just fantasizing about visiting Dumaguete to revisit my footprints I had there when I was a student at Silliman U in the 70s and, surprise, you gave me a nice glimpse of the brand new boulevard that was virtually non-existent in my time. I guess they had appropriated a vast area of private land or they must have undertaken some reclamation and they did a fine job putting that seaside park as a healthy breathing space for the city dwellers. Not far from that there used to be some tiny joints where we'd hang out for some beer while having "sound trip" with juke boxes; listening to Richard Harris' "McArthur Park" is an immortal experience. Couldn't forget the city and the people - - arguably the kindest folks in the country. Looking forward to more vlogs!!

Good to see the nighttime activities and music... Reminds me of Danang Viet. Likely it is not as dusty as Cambodia but with that kind of humidity a 2 shower day is minimum. Good to hear about the trash receptacles... maybe a new mindset will clean things up. You explain exactly why don't seek out other Americans because I don't hang out in bars I don't get drunk and I don't say the F word they the F word openly which is a big insult to a conservative population representing our white faces so negatively . I have encountered locals that I can tell they already judge me From there past experience with drunk a** fools, that happened to be white skinned... There is a certain percentage of percentage of Western guys that end up in places like the Philippines, simply because they are mentally or alcohol induced unstable and they certainlyLack normal skills to associate with women, and/or they're just plain butt ugly with no style .... Having experience culture shock every time I return to USA, I don't have a lot of needy desire to associate with other Americans. Maybe I don't fit in to the trendy side of things, and I'm quite happy.. Thanks for sharing really enjoyed the nighttime video

Men from the west, mostly Americans, preferred SBMA & CLARK. If not only for the red light district and high cost of living, everyone would prefer these two. You cannot see elsewhere in Philippines a group of foreign bikers riding on their Eagle, BMW, & Harley Davidson - roving northward to Ilocos Region, down to Bicol and so forth, but by expats coming from SBMA & Clark. Likewise, foreign yacht owners are stationed in Cebu, Manila, and SBMA

Alot of pros and cons with respect to Dumaguete. I do like your honest take on everything. I plan to go there and see for myself. But completely agree that if you own/rent a home you should invest in a generator. Good job.

I love Dumaguete along the Boulevard part near Starbucks. Everywhere I went in the Philippines I found the internet to be best in Manila and Dumaguete! You are right if you make a living online you would need back up internet. The upload and download speed on Smart is over 10 mbps and a good plan with them is less than 500 pesos a month.

Philippines doesnt have proper sewage thats very sad . If you heard that Boracay was close for 6 months because theres no proper sewage. Living on the City is really disaster specially during raining season. However theres a lot of beautiful places that you can visit specailly the beautiful beaches around the Philippines :) 😀
