*1st one. Learn the rulebook.* The stick does NOT have to contact the head for a major to be called. It's solely at the discretion of a ref. The game misconduct is automatically assessed whenever a crosscheck major is called.

I was at the game Pitkanen shattered his heel. I vividly remember hearing the thud and him screaming in pain (since the canes unfortunately had a pretty empty arena during this time). He was a solid all around defenceman too and it's real unfortunate his career ended that way

It's so crazy looking back and thinking how we didn't move to hybrid icing sooner. Especially considering that as rough as the Pitkanen play was, it wasn't even as bad as some of the hits that came from icing plays where guys just got drilled into the boards with no real way to protect themselves because of having to make a play on the puck.

Capitals first rounder Pat Peake shattered his heel on a similar play in the 90s and was never the same. Definitely took too long for the rule to change.

Pitkanen was not the only reason, Justin Schultz of the oilers had a career changing knee injury that also was a deciding factor.

I did basically the same thing in a beer league game and shattered the end of my left tibia and broke my left fibula, as well. Three plates, 20 screws and a year of rehab and I was back on skates, for one time, just to say I did. Haven't even skated recreationally very much since them. With a skate boot on, my leg from the knee down to the ankle swells up on one side and kind of caves in on the other and no longer looks like part of a leg. Now, I did that skating at "beer league speed." I can't imagine what it must have been like for Pitkanen at the time of his injury and going forward. He was skating at "NHL full-tilt speed" when he got hurt. Every time I see an NHLer slam into the boards skate blade first, I still cringe and hope they can get up and skate away. Breaking the tibia in such a way as I did is very bad...breaking your calcaneous (heel) is much worse. In almost every case it will be a career ending injury.

I was too young to remember this but it's still so sad. Pitkanen was a name I knew well as a canes fan and I didn't know this ended his career so it just makes it all the more upsetting

A couple more ideas for round 2 -Bill Masterton's tragic end (though that did take a long time before they made helmets mandatory) -Sean Avery turning his back to the play to distract Brodeur -Matt Duchesne's offside goal that made offside reviews a thing -Brett Hull's 1999 Cup clincher that eliminated the no foot in crease rule for good -Martin Brodeur's trapezoid -honorable mention to David Leggio who knocked the net off intentionally on a two-on-zero in the AHL. It lead to a penalty shot, which is arguably a better outcome for him and made the save. The league immediately closed that loophole after that... kinda: the goalie would get a game misconduct, and anyone on the ice can take a penalty shot on the backup goalie.

Let's add another one, waaaay older: There was a time where a two-minute minor penalty wouldn't end upon the team on power play scoring a goal. What I heard is that ended when Jean Béliveau, a Montreal Canadiens all-time great, scored an actual hat trick during one single power play. They then thought it was being ridiculous, and stated that if a team on a power play were to score a goal, the power play would end then and there.

How about Roger Nielson causing the rule change that when a goalie leaves the net they can't leave their stick behind blocking the net. He also put out a defenseman instead of a goalie for penalty shots causing that rule to be changed and late in games while defending leads he'd intentionally take too many men on the ice penalties every few seconds since a team couldn't drop below 3 skaters on the ice.

the reason teams dont switch sides in overtime is because of billy smith. 1983/84 was the first year of reg season overtime and the teams would switch sides like they do in the playoffs . billy smith knowing that the ice would not be cleaned by the zambonie would take his skates and chop up the ice in his crease right before the 3 rd period ended so when they switched sides the opposing goalie would have to play the 5 min overtime in a crease that had chopped ice. pretty brilliant lol

The rules all make sense except for the goaltender one. I could see a coach forbidding his goalie from crossing the red line, but why would the league step in?
@Fatcheeser
@Fatcheeser 2 жыл бұрын
They changed the rule because of the additional protection that goalies get. They aren't allowed to be hit or handled like a normal player even outside the crease. They wanted to eliminate the ability of a player to hit the goalie and change the game as well as eliminate the potential for the goalie to carry the puck and try to garner additional penalties against the other team. Basically it was to avoid a situation like the NFL has right now with quarterbacks and no one being able to figure out if they are a runner or still a passer when they bolt from the pocket and get hit. You can't have all the protections of a goaltender out in middle ice handling the puck. However, if you aren't given those protections (being slow and a big target) then very bad things can happen and games can get out of control.

Touch icing is stupid and dangerous. Pitkanen was lucky compared to Luděk Čajka who died from a fall while chasing the puck in 1990. IIHF got rid of touch icing immediately. If the NHL cared about the players they would have had got rid of it in 1990 as well.

Thanks for the video, very informative. However, I was expecting to see the Sean Avery rule. During the playoffs between the Rangers and the Devils (can't remember the year), Sean Avery would stand in front on Marty Brodeur, facing him, and thus, turning his back on the play. He would gesture constantly in front of Brodeur's face to annoy him and block his view. The NHL issued a rule during the offseason that states that you have to face the action. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5TCY6KBjMplfdk

On #6 on your list. I don't think the refs messed up as badly as you think. VGK got 5 minutes for senseless violence. For being stupid. If you don't think that's fair, how about 5 on 3 for a full 2 minutes. Both Stastny and Eakin were guilty of penalties. Or a 4 minute double minor for blood drawn on the collisions. And if you hate all that, how about kill the penalty? The first Couture goal was 4 seconds in. Maybe call a timeout? No? Maybe a timeout after goal 2? Maybe don't blow a 3-1 series lead? Maybe don't yield a SHG GWG in double OT in game 6 at home up 3-2 in the series. I think VGK got way too much pity and management showed their true colours.

First one, he hit a defenceless player high with a cheap shot. 5 minutes was a good call. Makarov wasn’t a first year player, he was a first year NHL player. He had played at the highest levels for over a decade. While I am a huge fan of Sergei Makarov, he had no business being considered as a Calder candidate. Krug left his feet. That wasn’t a clean hit. It wasn’t the Gretzky rule, it was the Glen Sather rule. And it was chickenshit, just like the trapezoid and not permitting skilled goalies to play the puck in most of the space behind the goal line.

Age shouldn't matter for "Rookie" status. I think the goalies should be allowed to carry the puck up the ice. If they start carrying it up the ice, they should be open to receiving hits though. The rule changes I would like to see are: -Stricter enforcement of Instigator calls. If you start a fight(slashing/crosschecking at someone to get them to fight), you get tossed from the game. -Icing gets waived off if the puck goes through the blue paint of the crease -Removal of regular season shoot-out

The rookie age rule is stupid. Being a rookie has nothing to do with your age. Whether you’re 18 or 48. Being a rookie is strictly denoting your FIRST YEAR IN THE LEAGUE. Your rookie year. I don’t care if you’re 20, or you’re 50 - if it’s your first inaugural year in the league, then you’re a rookie - end of story. When you hit your second season in the league, you’re no longer a rookie. Literally the definition of the word “rookie” is: a new recruit, especially in the army or police. "a rookie cop" *a member of an athletic team in his or her first full season in that sport.*

Exactly! This restriction makes sense in European leagues where players change enormously and many stars make careers elsewhere before settling in a European country playing their last years (also European born players these days) but not in NHL where the best players are already in by default. Guess they just wanted it to be a junior award in the first place without creating another trophy.

the sharks did not just get 4 goals in that game. They battled hard as hell and deserved it. In the next series the sharks got a 5 minute major penalty against the avs and sweeped it of like it was nothing. The 5 minute major is not an excuse to let in 4 goals like that in a game 7.

Wait a second here.... That Krug hit was not clean... The contact was 'clean' sure. But he skated 150 accelerating the whole way down the ice to that hit. That is called charging and is not legal...

About Vegas Golden Knights vs San Jose... I wish I could have sympathy for the Knights in this one. I can't. I'm pretty much with UrinatingTree on this one albeit in a far less cruel and disrespectful manner since they're my 4th favorite team. The Referees screwed both teams in albeit near equal fashions, but Vegas didn't do themselves any favors. They deserved to lose, end of story. 1] Vegas received an almost as good call in game 2 on goaltender interference that went in their favor that shouldn't have. They rallied afterwards and won game 2, 3, and 4 2] The did nothing in game 5 3] They couldn't solve Martin Jones in Game 6 despite savagely outplaying San Jose. When the game went to overtime tied at 1 [I think] only to have Vegas let the softest goal on their own power-play with all the momentum in the world. This game never should have went to overtime. 4] They were up 3-0 in the third, and then cross-checked someone, and in a freak accident, the player was bleeding and badly hurt. 5 minute major. They could have done a better job on the penalty kill. If that happened the game never would have made it to overtime, and Vegas would have won. Vegas had FAR too many chances to get the job done and didn't. I don't feel sorry for the bad call that costed Vegas, not with all these factors in play.

The head coach for Vegas was also too gutless to call a timeout during that power play to try and refocus their PK unit, but they didn't 😆.

The rookie age cutoff was a kneejerk reaction and a bad decision. It should be based on pro or international experience. Makarov played in the Soviet league for a decade (plus several olympics), which should have disqualified him. Most rookies are age 18-20 and have played since age 6, or 12-14 years. But imagine someone who NEVER played (even in PeeWee) starts playing for fun at age 20 in rec leagues, turns out to be a natural, then plays college hockey, the ECHL and the AHL, and makes the NHL by 28. That person has less playing experience than a 20 year old, but wouldn't be eligible.

They need to let coach’s challenge penalties. If they don’t wanna do that in general cause there worried about delaying the game they need to at least allow it if a goal happens in that same shift a supposed penalty was taken

@@JESL_TheOnlyOne yes and I’m pointing out id rather have a delay of game for a couple minutes opposed to letting a goal stand that shouldn’t. They can challenge offsides, goalie interference so there’s already something that delays the game by a coaches challenge may as well add more
