Keenan should have been #1. He'll go down in history as the only coach who won a Stanley Cup and was basically fired during the off-season. The explanation was that Rangers management failed to pay him a contract bonus, voiding his contract. The real reason was that the players turned on him, to the point where he was actually banned from practices by the players, who won the championship despite him.

Tortorella as number 1 seems unfair to say the least. Torts is a hothead and has a coaching style that not every player will enjoy, but he doesn't seem to be abusive like some of the coaches on this list.

I don’t know where this guy got this about torts. Most of his players love playing for him. There have been numerous interviews with former players who give torts credit. I think the media has more to do with his bad rep than the players.

I agree with everyone but torts. He doesn’t mess around, he holds the players accountable no special treatments, just hard work and most amount of teamwork. He also stands up and defends his players when media are trying to make something out of nothing, even defends his players on the ice giving the refs hell when they should have made the call. Plus of course, he isn’t cliche with the media which is great cause they really do ask stupid questions.

I actually like tortarella it was amazing when the blue jackets players ( artemi panarin bobrovsky and Matt duchene) signed somewhere else and was still able to get them to a playoff spot witch was the best coaching from a coach that coaches a shitty team I’ve seen from a coach

Tort's biggest fault is that he is very good at sensing the hidden agenda. SO often reporters try to pit one against the other, and he hates that. and he will call it. They also ask very stupid questions..

I would much rather have had Torts as a coach than any of the others. The only times I've seen players in his dog house is when they were not playing hard, especially if they weren't doing their defensive responsibilities. I'm sure that the other players on the team would have loved that about him

Pretty sure Tortorella isn't as hated as it seems, even amongst players. One huge factor that contributes to his reputation is that he is very harsh on reporters who ask stupid questions and in return they retaliate when they write articles about him or when they are summoned on a panel and find a way to bash him live. Over time I've seen the other side of Torts that we rarely see in the medias: he is 100% invested in his team's success, very humane behind the scenes, spends time and money on charities... I would never put Tortorella and Keenan in the same sentence.

Mario Tremblay, Habs coach in 1996, left goalie Patrick Roy in for 9 goals against, finally took him out near the end of the game. Stared down Roy after Roy told the President that was his last game for Montreal. Worst coaching decision of all time. Roy went on to win the Cup with the Avs next season.

You know, I’ve actually always got a kick out of Tortorella. A lot of sports reporters ask dumb questions (yeah, as an Oilers fan, we have to deal with Mark Spector). So, I can totally get why Torts gets annoyed with them. I personally never really have heard of any issues with Torts and any of his players, and from what I gather, most enjoy(ed) him as a coach and respected him. Yeah if my son was in the military in harms way while coaching in a WORLD TOURNAMENT I would tell the players on my team that "if you sit on the bench during the anthem you will sit during the game". Did you also know that Torts never told them they couldn't talk to the media or voice their concerns or opinions on what was going on. He never tried to stop their freedom of speech. Did you know that Seth Jones (the black player you're talking about) when goated by the media about the whole situation said "I'm just here to play hockey" and "I think it's fair" that Torts made that rule. He cares about the anthem, and regardless of your opinion he has skin in the game. People should think before the comment or "protest" things they don't understand. When you say "police brutality"? You mean when the media and a portion of the population ASSume the police were wrong and being racist because race is all they think about and play on 24/7 without knowing all the facts? Yeah and then when all the evidence comes out proving them wrong in 90% of these cases they bury the story when it doesn't go their way, or they straight up lie. I watched it with the Kyle Rittenhouse case. Punch Imlach. Many of his players in the late 60's on the Maple Leafs couldn't stand him. One being Frank Mahovlich, so he traded him to Detroit, and Toronto hasn't won the Cup since.

He won 4 Cups in the 60s including their last. He built the original Sabres that went to the cup final. Some guys didn't love Punch, but I would not pin the Leafs not winning a cup since on him. He traded Mahovlich to get Norm Ullman and Paul Henderson, both performed great in Toronto. The Leafs were in a rebuild and well what do you know before he could continue his work they fired him. Considering how he built the original Sabres would have been nice, also not getting Ballard as owner.

To be fair, Mike Keenan should have been #2 on this list, if not #1. He was a violent man who also destroyed one franchise he did coach. Most of the others at least put their teams forward in the long run. Tortorella was definitely not a safe person to be around. When he yells, you could hear him from the other side of the city. And his players either get the message, get intimidated, or quit. As for Babcock, he did pull one antic that crossed the line and destroyed his integrity, but except for that, he did nothing unacceptable. He wasn't as violent as Keenan, but he was intimidating enough. Still, most of his team respected him. But one missing name from this list was Scotty Bowman. He deliberately got adversarial and intimidating with his players, so they hated him 364 days a year, the 365th being the one they pick up their Stanley Cup ring.

Bowman was not psychopathic like some of these guys but he was a master manipulator who would also discover everything he could about your personal life and use it against you. A lot of players did not like him but it was a different era. Besides, he won everywhere he went.

Head coaches rarely communicate with players. Imo this is done to keep a working relationship. It's hard to push buttons when things are going poorly and you're best friends with players. Assistant coaches on the other hand are the ones that players go to and then they relay to the coach. Hitch is known to be one of the smartest hockey minds in hockey. But everyone else on the list I agree with.

I sat that season in an very empty Ball Arena. Avs definitely have come a long way, because of Bednar. Roy will never be given an opportunity to coach again in my opinion.

As a Red Wings fan, Im with ya Leafs fans. Babcock is the most overrated piece of shit of all time. Yay he coached a stacked team to an olympic gold medal. Yay he coached a stacked Red Wings team to a Stanley Cup, and then choked 2 games in 2009. Mike Babcock is the reason why Chris Osgood didn't win a 4th cup, 3rd as a starter, and isn't in the hall of fame. Babcock is 1 and 4 all time in Stanley Cup Finals clinching games. 1 and 4. 5 times he's played a game that could have clinched the Stanley Cup, 1 with Anahiem in 03, 2 with Detroit in both 08 and 09. Real legend there... and he's 0-2 in Stanley Cup Finals Game 7's also. He played too conservatively, would try and score a few goals and then just sit back like it's a soccer game and then blow a lead, or just never be aggressive enough early in games when it was 0-0. He absofuckinglutely will be in the Hall of Fame unfortunately... you would assume, he's ironically beloved by some but yeah, Detroit and Toronto fans and probably Anaheim fans too despise him for choking constantly. Maybe since the HOF is in Toronto yall can petition to keep him out, and we'll drive 3 hours north to help? :)

lol back in the day the rumor was Jacques Lemaire was hated by all of his players, they might've hated the guy but he was an excellent coach. I guess he was dictatorial behind the bench. There were quite a few coaches that had that label. Mike Keenan was another one, Pierre Pagé etc.

Scotty Bowman should have been on this list. Scotty Bowman was a very successful coach, but the reason why he was a successful coach was he treated his players that he coached like garbage. A few players that Scotty Bowman coached have said when the time comes when Scotty Bowman passes away, when they are attending his funeral they will relieve themselves by urinating on Scotty Bowman grave stone.

As a Hab, I never liked Michel Therrien👎👎👎 I know every coach gets frustrated with their players sometimes. But he seemed very personal with his displeasure. Then he had a SECOND stint with Montreal and was still the same🤢🤢🤢 That comment sbout Pittsburgh having "Goals" to be the worst defensive team in the NHL was pretty bad to say about the team you are working for. Montreal competed because of Theodore his first stint and then of Price his second, not because of his coaching. Had Crosby in Pittsburgh, not his coaching winning games, his good players.

The superstars were usually left alone, so long as they had a bit of snarl. There are hilarious stories of what Messier would get away with with Mike Keenan. Those coaches were only brutal to non-tough hockey players, which just shows that they are bullies. On Spittin Chiclets, there was a player who said that Ken Hitchcock would tear into you and be meaner and meaner until you bit back. As soon as you started yelling back, he would lay off and actually respect you. What a pathetic soul you have to be to require that.

Mike Keenan stripped the Cataincy off of Trevor Linden and gave it to Messier. Then traded Linden away. Also heard he gave Grant Ledyard time off to be with his wife who had cancer at the time then Keenan told the team that Ledyard quit the team.

Great list!! Keenan, Torts have to be the worst two. Crawford, Babcock, Orval Tessier definitely too. Orval Tessier told the media his players need about 20 heart transplants after Chicago lost the first 2 games of the 1983 Campbell conference finals vs the Edmonton Oilers. BTW Brett Hull and Phil Kessel are not exactly the most coachable players, although I'd give an 85 goal scorer a free pass. Kessel also got Randy Carlyle fired.

I made a negative comment, here's my positive one about Keenan to highlight his earned reputation: This story doesn't seem to exist on the internet anywhere, I read it in a book by a guy who had a lot of inside Blackhawks knowledge over a prolonged period of time. I believe the story involved Chelios and another player breaking curfew during a road trip. They were caught by Keenan, who was very strict with such things (you can find a deadspin article with Roenick talking about other examples.) Keenan didn't seem to say anything to the Chelios, so he thought he was off the hook. He was even in the starting line-up. Then after roughly a minute on the ice, he came to the bench for a change, but Keenan ordered him to stay out there. Ended up getting punished with a shift that went well beyond 5 minutes. Brutal and funny. There's another story of Keenan doing a similar thing with Kovalev years later. Although in that story, people suggest that Kovalev thought he was being rewarded, not realizing it was a punishment, haha

There is no way Torts should be on this list. He never, ever, disrespected his players. Even those who had troubles with him say he cared deeply for them, taught them so much about life, and many became friends with him later on. My thoughts as a (relatively) well-informed outsider who played the game at a decent level: Babcock and Keenan are plain psychopaths Hitchcock, at least here in STL, seemed demanding but respectful of players. I know a few people who have met him and never heard anything bad. He’s a hockey savant who might understand Xs and Os better than anyone else alive. But he does seem like he’s a perfectionist and stubborn and I can see how that can get old. Im also don’t think he’s the best at personal relationships, even if he’s far from the worst Everything I’ve seen from Tortorella makes him seem like a kind of coach I would love to play for, but as for perfectionism and stubbornness, see my comments on Hitch. I could also see how that would suck if you end up on his bad side Wilson just seems like he ran into two players who had long careers of being coach killers. But idk much else about him Crawford, I don’t know much about him
