It's true that Venom really doesn't fit in the film, but I still think he works as a personification of all of Spidey's mistakes, someone he could've turned into if he didn't have an Uncle Ben figure. Still, the criticism is valid. While everything else he does wigth the black suit is bad (hurting Harry, trying to kill Sandman and hurting Mary Jane) this does stand out as the one good thing, which is a problem. Maybe Eddie could've been an honest reporter that actually did expose Spidey as a geniune threat and Peter still fucked him over, somehow. Then, when he eventually turned into Venom and his righteous hatred got out of hand to the point where he captured Mary Jane or threatened Aunt May, Spidey would have more then a good reason to feel guilty for what he did. Not only would that make him a more relatable antagonist, it would also fit the movie's narrative of redemption and guilt perfectly. But, perhaps that would've made the film too crowded with stuff, which is probably why they should've kept Venom for Spiderman 4 (which I know would never happen but, still, let me fanfic a bit). I imagine a Spiderman 4 where Peter is trying to repair every bad thing he did with the black suit and Venom being there as a reminder that he can't outrun the past.

See, we all built up SPIDER-MAN 3 too big and everyone was screaming for something different... Topher Grace was perfectly cast--for what was WRITTEN! What Raimi and co. wanted. The thing is... you can see Grace would've made an ideal Spider-Man. Spider-Man. Not Venom.

Willkommen im Dornenreich also, Topher Grace’s venom had a reason to be evil. He has Spider-Man to contend with. He has something GOOD to aim his AGGRESSION at which makes him evil. This character had an object of obsession to aim his evil at. Tom Hardy’s Venom, however, had nothing but ANOTHER EVIL ENTITY to aim his AGGRESSION at, i.e. the other symbiotes hellbent on destroying humanity aka their food source. Venom disagreed... this resulted in him liking Eddie Brock and saving the world. Venom isn’t evil... he’s just pissed off, supererpowered, and obsessed with Spider-Man. He has the capacity to do good if it suits his wants/needs. But Venom isn’t out to cause chaos and destroy the innocent. It sounds like CARNAGE, on the other hand, would be the symbiote for you. He loooooves murdering. His host Kletus Kassidy is a serial killer lunatic, hellbent on bloodshed and cruelty. I think you’d like him better.

You could also say that Venom in this movie is a literal representation of studio interference. Just based off the fact that Sam never wanted Venom in it at all, but it was pushed by Avi Arad as well as Sony.

I'd disagree with your analysis that Spider-Man 3's directing tries to paint Eddie Brock as sympathetic. On the contrary, I think the lengths it goes to show his vulnerability actually has the opposite effect. To me, it shows that behind all of his arrogant bravado, he's little more than a sniveling coward who will fall into a well of toxic self-pity the moment things don't go his way.

Have you ever read Venoms Dark origin it goes into detail about Eddie Brock past and childhood and how he wants to expose the truth but in a twisted demented way one of the core elements is he constantly blames others for his misfortunes never accepting responsibility for his own actions. That's what I felt Topher Grace nailed about Eddie this douche bag reporter/ photo journalist that does whatever he can to make it the top. Granted venom is rushed but never though Topher grace made the film bad Havent watched the vid yet bc I'm on the bus without earphones but.. Just watched great video
