Wow, Dolly’s family was HUGE! She was the 4th of 12 kids! She reminds me of Celine Dion, who also came from a large French Canadian family in Quebec, Canada.

I wish she had gone into detail about what they played with if they had no toys. My family was also poor and we had very few toys and my dad drew a checkerboard on a big piece of cardboard he cut from a box and we used light and dark buttons for checkers. I learned to "type" by studying the layout of a keyboard on a typewriter in a Sears catalogue and then staggering three books to resemble a keyboard and taping the letters in their proper places. Believe it or not, I got quite good and by the time I entered high school and took typing, I was extremely fast. My older sister drew the notes of a piano and learned how to play by using that homemade piano. We also played games that didn't require anything extra be made...games like kick the can, hide and go seek, and red rover. We played games where the only instrument we needed to use was our minds. It not only gave us something to do but it taught us to THINK. I am amazed that children today have DOZENS of toys and are always whining that they are bored. I think if we had said, "I'm bored", my dad would have told us to go hoe the corn and we wouldn't be bored any longer. And of course, like Dolly's family, we were always singing. We would go to bed and lie there in the dark and someone would start a song and in our small house we could all hear so we would all join in and we would sing every song we could think of until Dad would remind us that we had school the next day and we needed to stop singing and go to sleep. Also, like Dolly, my mother made many of my clothes so I totally understand where Dolly's coming from. I'm certainly not saying I'm just like Dolly because she has about a gazillion dollars and I have, well, significantly less!
