This is without a doubt the best instructional video I've ever seen covering the basics of a proper golf swing. I really like that while you talk, you demonstrate. I quit watching other golf instruction videos because the instructor just talks talks talks while holding a club and obviously like the sound of their own voices. Sorry, but it's true. This is an excellent video!!!!

Clay, this video is so helpful, it is just insane! Been playing for about 20 years with a 12 handicap - but this year I am committed to improving all aspects pf my game, beginning with the backswing. Your video (watched 5 times) followed by some range work has really improved many aspects of my shots - distance, control, accuracy.....and confidence! I will continue to follow you. Your video is....well, genius! Congratulations!

Clay the Chopping Drill is one of the teachings you have done. Today I used this technique to really get an idea how far I can rotate the hips , chest and shoulders. I was able to rotate more than I thought I could because of your chopping drill. I was hitting the irons solid and woods and Driver solid. Plus I got terrific height with 9 iron. Great Drill

I'm 70, a lifelong skier, started golfing in June 2020, 3 or 4 times per week, with used clubs borrowed from my sister. Two weeks ago I bought an (apparently) cheap set (Tour Select) from Good Will, $5 per club and noticed an immediate improvement (the borrowed ones were all miscellaneous). I watched your video last night and went (9 hole) golfing today on the most challenging of the five public courses in the city. While attempting to turn my body more and keep my left arm straighter, on the 1st tee I totally flubbed it getting 20 yards 45 degrees to the left and I thought, I should have gone to the driving range beforehand, ha ha. BUT, on the next 4 tees (and on maybe 3 subsequent holes) the ball flew straight down the fairways farther than ever before, over 150 yards which up to then had been my absolute limit. Thank you.

I followed your tip on making sure to bend the knees on the backswing to allow the hips to open up on the down swing. This was a total game changer - my head is now level, I can open up my hips, my ball flight is higher, and ball goes farther. Thank you so much! This was the one thing that was making me stuck. Now, my swing looks like a prototypical golf swing. I'm ecstatic!

Clay is one of the best online golf instructors....he tells it like it is....and that is a lot of practice at a gradual pace that works...for me I am constantly wanting to go back to my old swing where I feel more comfortable rather than letting it go and have the courage to work on it...even if affects my score on the course...because if I do it right and my work begins to show results it’s the best payoff I can get and really enjoy the game more...

Clay , I have many questions but I think you answered the ONE that I searched for on Google yesterday ! As a long time teaching professional , all I can say is that I taught the correct orientation of the backswing with the ball to my students but my own swing was always based on an arm swing and getting the club on the ball which I did pretty well , I was told . My question , : what do the PGA Tour players do in the backswing with the driver that lesser players don’t ? Your answer : “ every thing moves toward ball on the backswing ! “ I’ve been moving everything AWAY from the ball , if that makes sense , always a too flat backswing with a horizontal shoulder turn which makes it real hard to hit it solid especially under pressure ! Also , I noticed your wide stance , so I stepped wider to the right with the right foot at address and worked the whole left side toward the ball on the backswing , awesome , that’s my new , correct body swing ! Thanks Clay , keep em’ comin ‘ , John

Clay.... Great video. I watched this and the video on hitting behind the ball last night and took it to the range today. I've not played more then 2-3 times a year over the last 6-7 years. Prior I was a consistent 79- 83 player. I've been going to the range for 9 of the last 10 days and hitting the behind the ball constantly. Hit the ball flush about 95% of the time today. I was swaying and not keeping my left arm straight ..... just a few tweaks and from your instruction and everything fell back into the slot. Thanks..... your teaching style is great.

I think most of us are more athletic than we give ourselves credit for. If you've never done speed training before, it's an easy way to gain significant clubhead speed in a short period of time. The 20 Minute Distance Fix Course available to our All Access members covers this very topic (neural adaption) and the average gain after going through the course is 13mph. No weights, no stretching, just 20 minutes per day, three days a week, for three weeks. If you're ready to purchase the membership and get started with this course, just use the quick link below because you can sign up in about 1 minute: topspeedgolf.com/pick-all-access-plan/ Best of luck! Thanks for this video. I'm a little surprised you didn't mention anything about: - Using the ground to create / store / release energy - Not moving the head too much (swaying / turning) which would've been a good beginning / end to the journey through the different areas of the swing / body? Those can be important areas to focus on too when looking at the swing.

Hi Clay - great video. One comment - when I first started golf I used to suffer from swaying and reverse pivot because I wasn't turning around my spine. Instead I was lifting my club with my hands and arms. Also, by not rotating my hips correctly and maintaining hip depth I also suffered from early extension. Once I understood how to turn my body more or less correctly I started playing better. Now I'm a single handicapper but wish someone had shown me the correct way to turn and saved me years of poor golf. Thanks again.

For what its worth, for me its all about mental images. for the backswing my mental image is to stretch the clubhead as far back and as low as possible before hinging my wrists. on the downswing i try and picture the clubhead grazing the grass for as long as possible on the way through the ball. while it feels like im reaching back 20 feet with the club, and coming in super flat. the reality is that this mental picture i create for myself helps me build up a good rotation and keeps me from chopping down at the ball on the way down and through.

Clay, the tips work great for driver. Allows me to really swing it. When I use this swing with iron and full wedge I'm really sending it left with draw spin (I'm a righty). I'm thinking due to the suggested wrist hinge at setup. I think I naturally open face on driver and this closes it with good result, where as I'm fairly square with iron and wedge and this is closing me up. However id like your opinion. Thxx

@@TopSpeedGolf Clay you are a class act for taking the time to reply to your fans. Thank you. This is true. I never tried to change my swing and the results is I have been playing 50 years and have never broke 40. The last10 years it’s more in the 50’s on 9.

This video has definitely helped me get rid of my slice a bunch however sometimes I hit it and it goes straight to the right or straight to the left. is this merely a consistency problem where I just need to go to the range n keep practicing or am I doing something else wrong? and is there a video for what i’m doing wrong if infact I am doing something else wrong rather than just being inconsistent?

Hi, it's really impossible for me to say what may be going on in your swing. I would recommend searching our channel for videos on hitting it straight. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
