Great video. Devil Horse has been one of my go-to baits for years. After awhile, the paint on them will start to chip. I just grab some of my wife’s clear acrylic nail polish and touch it up. Tight lines my man.

Hi, Great video!! Thank you for sharing! Just an idea- any advantage in putting a dressed treble hook on the on the back replacing the back hook with it? Thank you

Dan Kelsey hey dan I have not tried the feather on the back but that may be a great idea! Thanks for your input and be sure to subscribe to the channel for more lure discussion videos.

Hi The Bass Guy! Love all your videos!! I did put a feathered dressed treble hook on the back of the smith wick prop and it worked just fine. Did not get in the way of the prop at all. Did catch Bass. I also called Smith Wick themselves and asked about putting the dressed hook on replacing the regular hook and they said it would work but they do not put them on. Rapala makes an X Rap Prop lure that looks the same as the smith wick one and it comes with a dressed hook on the lure. Hope this helps. Dan

How should I make the new hole to rotate that first hook? Should I be able to just simply screw it directly into the wood or should I be using a tiny drill bit cause I definitely dont have one and dont want to split the wood going straight in with a screw
@kls2020 Жыл бұрын
The screws are really small and the wood it very soft so it wont split . You can make a pilot hole for starting the screw using a small finishing nail thinner than the screw diameter and just pressing the tip of the nail into the wood . You can also put some clear nail polish or super glue on the screw threads before screwing in to keep water out

I'm new to bass fishing so am trying to learn as much as possible. Did you not replace the rear hook and just leave it off? It looks like there were only two treble hooks on there when you were done, am I correct ?
@ryanbuckley33143 жыл бұрын
Do I need to use short shank hooks on that?
@ESPNsPeacockbassProfessor7 жыл бұрын
The Devils horse is also weighted more at the front..if you switch the line eye to the back and the rear hook to the front it will improve casting accuracy.

Do you put a back hook on the DH or just two? And do you throw it on braid or braid to mono ??
@TheBassGuy6 жыл бұрын
hey ralph i put a hook on the back and use braid
@davethegaultney2243 жыл бұрын
@@TheBassGuy do you add bobber stops or anything with braid? I've heard it gets tangled in the front prop a lot on slack line if not.

Very informative video. Thank you for posting it. In just the past two weeks I’ve caught over 40 bass on the rapala x rap prop. Another great lure similar to the devils horse. It needs modifications also. The split rings supplied are terrible and the hooks are way too small. The rapala has a feathered hook and works great. The weight distribution is better than a devils horse, casts longer, and makes a lot more disturbance on the water. Give it a try. I think you’ll be impressed.

Rather than rotating the rear prop could you just send it the opposite direction?

What did you do to the back hook? Did you also add a split ring there also?

+Robert Duren hey Robert I did not add a split ring to the back because I did not want the hook to interfere with the prop

I've been catching bass on devil horses since I was kid. This was the only top water we fished in the fin and feather pits. I've seen 30 to 40 bass being caught at sun up , sun down and overcast days. A double twitch with a 3 second pause is killer pattern.
@TheBassGuy7 жыл бұрын
where are these feather pits you speak of? lol

Great modifications EXCEPT use a #4 split ring instead! I have had 2 big bass (6-8lb class) pull the hooks off of the #3 rings by pulling them straight out! Only using 10 -12 lb test line....I changed them all out again but to a #4 ring which is much stronger and still small.....I should have changed them after losing the first fish like this....the second one was a heart breaker😢...

Damn , you got some huge hooks on there. The best devils horse they don’t make anymore. It was shorter and only had 2 hooks on it.

Man, I really like those mods to the lure. If I were you, I would use a drop of super glue in each screw hole when replacing the screws. I just don't trust those TINY screws, especially once you've loosened or removed, then re-installed them. Once ya glue 'em & screw them back in, ya have no need to remove them again, because now you're using split rings. Wouldn't ya just hate to have a 12 to 15 lb bass rip loose........all due to super tiny screws with puny threads? I also glue the screws into other lures like a Jitterbug because I HAVE HAD BASS OF ONLY 4 TO 5 LBS RIP THOSE SCREWS RIGHT OUT & ESCAPE. AND THAT WAS WITH BRAND-NEW OUT OF THE BOX LURES. No matter if the lure is wood or plastic, if it uses this old-fashioned tiny screw system for the line-tie & hooks, I'M SUPER GLUING THEM IN............Don't "learn the hard way" like I did Bro!!! This is exactly why most lure makers went with the "wire-through the entire lure design" or "wire looped & encased in the lure" for attaching hooks & line-ties to their lures. A drop of super glue can mean the difference between a trophy and absolute heart ache.
@TheBassGuy7 жыл бұрын
thats a great idea! I will definitely use superglue from now on. Thank you for the awesome advice.

I haven't heard or seen a "devil's horse" in decades. It was one of the "go-to" baits my dad used in 60's. His other "go-to" lure was the "tiny torpedo". He could always catch bass. Any modifications on the "tiny torpedo"? Oh, another "oldie lure" ~~ The H&H spinnerbait.

Danny thanks for watching! I wish i had a few tricks up my sleeve for a torpedo but unfortunately i do not.

I used to fish teeny torpedoes- the silver/black got me a lot of bass. The only mods I made to it was basically the same as with this- I would add split rings and better hooks, and using a pair of pliers I would bend the front prop so that each blade was at more of an angle then on the back I'd do the same as with the front but I'd also angle both blades on the back backwards a little bit- like swept back at an angle if that makes sense. Roland Martin does a better job explaining but it works! Just let that teeny sit for a bit, then twitch twitch pause baby!

The Devil's Toothpick was also a fantastic topwater lure. Sadly, they no longer make them.
