Who doesn’t love a quick temporal shift into 1941 with no guaranteed way to get home. That only scratches the surface of the penultimate episode of Torchwood’s first series!

Two men kissing in 1941 could litteraly get them in jail or worse. John Barrowman (captain Jack) stated that after the kissing scene he found Matt Rippy who played the real capt.Harkness in tears and was worried he somehow had overdone it as Matt is straight, the reason was very different - Matt was sad that a positive gay role model wasn’t around to inspire his brother who had committed suicide years prior... Barrowman and his partner Scott are together for about 30 years they married first in the UK and later in the US as soon as they legally could.

Yikes, that's brutal. At least as a straight guy he was willing to do the role for his brother. I'm straight and fully support the LGBTQIA community, but I don't know that I'd kiss another guy on the lips. I usually mock people for being homophobic - I did it a lot in high school. But I have my limits. I don't kiss anyone on the mouth if I don't have romantic feelings for them. For a movie, I don't know. It's not like a cripple like me is ever going to end up in movies, so it doesn't matter. I might just to mess with some really homophobic people.

So when Julie Gardner, executive producer and also head of drama at BBC Wales, persuaded Russell T Davies to join the BBC there were three projects they were working on. The first was Casanova, which ended up starring David Tennant. The second was the Doctor Who revival. And the third was a proposed series called Excalibur, which was pitched as doing a series like Angel but in a British context. When Doctor Who series one did better than expected, they changed Excalibur into a spin-off, renamed it Torchwood (from the anagram of Doctor Who they had used to disguise what the tapes were for), earmarked Captain Jack for the Angel role and seeded it through series two of Doctor Who. So yes, the Angel vibes are by design.

Oo, that reminds me I still haven't seen Casanova (or rather only clips of it).

@@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll Do it! It's the perfect match between RTD's script, and David Tennant's mercurial acting skills!

i really like bilis as an antagonist. the actor has such a peculiar affect, but he's kind of hypnotic.

I love this episode. There's mystery, excitement, major tension, sadness, and under it all such a romantic scene between Jack and, well... Jack. 😄😍 That scene of them dancing is just the sweetest. And the music theme while all of that is happening is just gorgeous. Definitely one of my season 1 favorites.

Great episode. The finale of S1 as a whole didn't really stick the landing, but I don't particularly care about that. Bilis made for a wonderfully charismatic villain and the 1941 scenes are excellent.

I watched this episode when it aired when I was 10 (far too young to be watching Torchwood lol) but it was the first time I'd ever seen a man kiss another man. It had such a profound impact on me just as I was learning that I might be gay before I really knew what that meant. Crazy I had to learn that in a silly sci fi spin off, thanks in a large part to section 28 in the UK

no spoilers, and not hyping up anything in particular, i'm excited for the places you're going to be going soon. it's just that generally and to a point both doctor who and torchwood *keep getting better* every year during this period. more confident, more strange, more thoughtful, more exciting. like, as good as the shows have been, broadly speaking you are right on the verge of a ton of *Excellent Stuff*, stuff i personally cherish for the joy it's brought me. a veritable feast. and you seem to have such earnest fun with the show, i am happy that you're gonna be experiencing all this yourself for the first time, and that you're bringing us all along with you to share in your delight. just a note about continuity among the shows: it's not a super big deal and they don't force you to watch all the series in broadcast order to understand what's going on, but there are little details from each season of who and its spin-offs that feed into what comes next-like a little bonus reward for viewers who have followed everything. and much as torchwood 1 slots specifically between who 2 and who 3, both torchwood 2 and sarah jane adventures 1 happen between who 3 and who 4. again it's not crucial, but if you're after the full intended effect then i'd suggest shifting your schedule around to ensure you've finished the next torchwood and the first sarah jane before the last few episodes of doctor who series 4. i don't know if you were planning on watching sja, but i think you would get a kick out of it. although doctor who is ostensibly a family show, sja is more clearly aimed at kids in particular. it's not at all patronizing, though; it's good children's fiction, that respects its audience-and if anything, it kind of resembles classic who more than the revived main series even does. the episodes and seasons are shorter, they have to get clever with an even smaller budget. it's charming as heck, and a fun third leg of the 2000s-era whoniverse.

Thanks for the info! I think I have my schedule all mapped out in the right spot, more or less. Excited to dive in, and YES I have already started Sarah Jane and am looking forward to seeing more of the show. Reactions will start releasing in early July.

Murray Melvin - the actor who played Bilis Manger "the Caretaker" in this episode (very creepily), starred in a VERY early (1962) film of "A Taste of honey" - from Shelagh Delaney's play - as one of the first openly Gay characters to appear on-screen. If you haven't seen the film, try to catch it!
