Thank you Smith Family to preserve our history in the memories and the hard-working backbone of Americans that put these barns up. It was a community event on building and raising a barn. I hope this inspire other American families to do the same thing as you and your families doing. Thank you much love for saving part of American History. ❤🙏🏻🇺🇸

My grandma is from Washington Indiana she was born 1912 and the youngest of 9. I went to a family reunion in 1982 for the first time her oldest brother who at the time owned the family farm about 100 dairy cows and a hugh red barn. But as we where driving in my grandparents stop and get out to show me a hugh old barn that my great grandfathers family had build. OMG the whole thing was standing in a huge pasture what a sight it was. I always wanted to have it to restore into a home. You should try and get as much history on the family as possible and print it up and hang next to the photo💜

Seeing the photo of the barn before it was torn down it looks like the gable end of the barn the boards are vertical. In your guest house I think it would be cool to have the gable ends of the interior, kitchen, loft, and living area to also be vertical to have a connection to the source of the wood. It would be cool to have the picture of the barn somewhere where you can turn around and it be like you standing in the 180 year barn. Also I think having the boards vertical would add a sense of height to the room like standing in a large open barn. If I know my history correctly the barn wood is a little older than Texas 😀

I took down the old corn crib that was falling apart. Think the crib was built in 1900's or late 1890's... Stored the boards in another shed. Then build a 30x30 pole bldg in the same location. Had the shed sprayed insulation. Then we sorted all the old boards and took out all the old nails. Lay them in the new shed trying to figure out what boards would look best where. I had idea how to even is the boards with holes in them but wouldn't be able to see the yellow insulation. Had packing flat board that is thin from work and put them on the wall and spray painted the board black so you couldn't see the insulation. I left all the old iron that was found on a board for character. Had some big thick we used as baseboard and ran all the boards vertical. Had some boards that had paint on them so I used those around where an old sink from my dad's home farm will be. We did that so it would look just a little different than the other walls. Then where the workbench went we put galvanized old steel on the wall and built a workbench from my great-grandfather's Barn. So then the ceiling is all old galvanized steel. Couldn't use galvanized steel on the garage door header because the door mechanism wouldn't work going over the ridges. But I had an old piece of splat steel but have a name of the business that my parents bought the farm from so all we had to do is cut it in half and it fit the place perfect. So it is 100% family generation of farm barn wood. This was a tribute to my late husband because this was his dream shed for when he retired. He passed 4 months before he was going to retire so it has a porch over the door, so had cement poured and I still had his work boots so I put his boot marks in the cement like he was walking into his shed ❤️....I absolutely enjoy spending time on it because I can feel his love there. Granger I'd love to send you pictures of my shed but where would I send them to? Granger , I like the idea of the kitchen horizontal boards and the big open space vertical boards.

So I grew up just south and then inside Yosemite. I can tell you that the pollen story is some fact, some fiction. Pine pollen, for those in the Sierra Nevadas (which include Tamarack) does have a lime ish green almost neon color to it, and it does coat everything in a rather heavy dust of the pollen. On moonlit nights, it does "glow" but not an'under black light' glow, just a 'hey I'm an oddly bright color green in the forest' glow. Enjoy the wood. I always love the re-use of old barn woods in projects.
