“Rishi Sunak may not know that he’s about to call an election.”

The budget isn’t about the British people. It’s about sticking it to Labour and that’s absolutely disgusting, especially when thousands are genuinely struggling.

I can’t stop myself from laughing in disgust at the thought of Political types enjoying ‘subsidised’ food and beverages in the parliamentary bar…or even enjoying their Caviar then washing it down with some delicious vintage Champagne at events while I struggle to afford the basics like bread, butter, eggs, cheese etc…labelling these types as Nazis would be complimentary they are worse..!😇

It doesn’t matter who gets power…we are guaranteed to get the blame culture…nothing but excuses…it wasn’t our fault, we didn’t cause the damage, fixing mistakes is never going to be popular but it’s necessary etc…I’d vote Tory and force them to FIX the MESS they have created…I have some sympathy for them because COVID was unprecedented and if there aren’t protocols in place I can’t argue that someone else would have done things better.😇

@@bgoode2903 There were protocols in place, but they literally deferred and deprioritised pandemic planning due to wanting to focus on planning for a no deal Brexit. They literally failed to plan, even though they had an option to, and the reason they did was because of another mess they had created. You can very much argue that people would have made decisions that would have had better outcomes. The choices they made were difficult, but only because they had made it difficult.

They're not gonna catch Labour out on that, as Labour are already expecting a May GE and have been gearing up for that for months. Ashworth said as much, basically, to Burley on Sky News earlier (and others in Labour have been saying it since before the NY).

They will be having the same discussions that these three were but they are saying it will be in May to prepare for the line "they planned a May election and they bottled it". Having said that, they will also have made plans for all the likely outcomes so they do not be caught by surprise (which would be extremely unprofessional).

Yes damage limitation. Go to the polls before summer and more small boats cross that your base dislikes.
@siskinedge

I think it's damage mitigation as: - They aren't warning people on the state pension that they have to pay income tax for the year in april due to triple lock rises - The South Devon primaries may make no tory seat safe There is a chance that waiting any longer would relegate them to being a third party for the foreseeable future.

It'll be his Brexit moment whenever he calls it. The only question is the scale of the fallout and how long it takes his party to recover from it. There is an argument to say that waiting for another summer of small boat crossings and another winter of the NHS imploding is not a vote winning strategy

Completely disingenuous of Daniel Finkelstein to say people vote on policy that improves their lives, if that were true the Tories would never have been in power at any point. Most of the electorate have no clue about policy differences. Great swathes of people vote based mainly on their broader belief system, sadly with most in the UK leaning towards being socially right, with a middle floaty bit that swings. Thats it.

Not at all Labour are awaiting the date for GE to be announced. Nothing to catch them out with on the hop nonsence. Labour are going to receive from Tories a disaster on a plate to sort out. When Labour wins the election the following day Starmer must provide a political broadcast to explain to all UK citizens how dire the Tories have left the country in and requires two terms to sort it out if can....Explain to citizens and hopefully the citizens will respect that and Labour will take the people that hard walk with them. Tories lest we never forget. Must not must keep them out for a generation. Vile government.

He wasn't voted in, I was." Really the vote will come down to whose the worse of two options?? Kier Starmer who hates the country and gets angry when someone asks him to define what is a woman? or Fishi Rishi, a man who got in power by ding a coup after Liz Truss got in power for 44 days. A man who just called half the country far right racists, and the other half islam terrorists.

The Trump theory occurred to me the other day too. I think we will see the Tories position themselves as the only possible international partner to a Trump led America, while Labour would pose a danger to US-UK relations and therefore NATO. They will cite all of the unpleasant things various Labour MPs have ever said about Trump.
@chrispalmer7893
@chrispalmer7893 2 ай бұрын
Not remotely clear why people assume Trump will win in November. His electoral record is pretty terrible - never won the popular vote, only wins the electoral college in 2016 because Hilary was uniquely unpalatable to the rust belt states (and even then Trump only just scraped in in those states), hammered by Biden in 2020 (the way the results came in over an extended time made it look a lot closer than it really was), poor results in the mid-terms in 2018 and 2022 with his hand-picked candidates often doing very badly. Yes, he has a rabid base of supporters, but there are nothing like enough of those to win a general. He needs moderate Republicans (there aren't many of these left in Congress, but there are lots of them in the electorate) and he needs Independents, which are the group that are most likely to be swayed by him being convicted which seems likely to happen in at least one of his criminal cases before November. And you only have to look at the Primaries to see that even though Biden has never been beloved by huge swathes of the Democractic Party, he's getting overwhelming support from all sides. Trump is winning Primaries, but we're seeing a consistent 40% or so in most states of voters from his own party demonstrating that they'd rather vote for someone - anyone - else. Yes, Biden is old and starting to look it, and that would be a huge problem if he was running against almost anyone else. As Trump is suffering from a similar - arguably more pronounced - cognitive decline there's only so much hay they can make about Biden's problems. Every time they highlight a Biden gaffe (and let's not forget Biden was pretty gaffe-prone when he was younger) it also draws attention to Trump's own issues. Plus Trump has lost the one thing that he had going for him in 2016. Back then it was possible to argue that he would be a breath of fresh air, that he knew how to get things done, that he wouldn't be as bad as his opponents claimed, but he doesn't have any of that benefit of the doubt this time round. We've seen four years of him struggling to get anything done and in many ways he was even worse than we said he was going to be. Yes, his nutcase supporters have convinced themselves that he was the best President they've ever had, but there's no sign they've convinced anyone else.

@@grahamevans2937 Reform isn't a political party, it's a vanity project for two men who are on record as desperately wanting to get rid of the NHS and move to an American-style insurance-based system. Now, they have zero real chance of gaining any sort of power, which suits Farage and Tice down to the ground as their grift is all about protest and opposition, but yes, if they somehow managed to become the government they would absolutely do all they could to destroy the NHS. The only question then is whether they'd actually be able to do it, partly because they are unlikely to have the required level of competence and partly because neither Tice nor Farage are likely to be able to withstand the additional scrutiny that comes from being in power rather than just a rent-a-quote novelty act. A Reform UK government would most likely be just a slightly more drawn out Truss government, only with the damage spreading much further than just the economy this time; I'd be surprised if the whole thing lasted as much as a year. The devastation caused would probably take a decade to fix, though.
