After a destructive tornado occurs, the NWS surveys the damage to estimate the tornado's wind speeds. The tornadoes are then rated by
their intensity using the EF scale or Enhanced Fujita scale from the weakest EF0's to the rare incredibly powerful EF5's. In this video we'll observe examples of each as well as the damage each rated tornado can cause.
EF-O TORNADO:
Not all tornadoes have the strength to cause severe destruction, in fact about 75% of tornadoes in the USA are relatively weak falling in the EF0 to EF1 range. A tornado rated EF0 has wind speeds estimated between 65 to 85 mph. They can cause light roof damage including damage to gutters or siding, break branches off trees and push over shallow rooted trees.
EF-1 TORNADO:
EF1 rated tornadoes are stronger with estimated wind speeds from 86 - 110 mph. They cause moderate damage such as roofs severely
stripped, exterior doors ripped off and broken windows. Cars are moved and Mobile homes are badly damaged or overturned.
EF-2 TORNADO:
EF2's cause considerable damage with estimated wind speeds between 111 and 135 mph. Roofs are torn off well-constructed houses, mobile homes are completely destroyed, large trees snapped and cars are lifted off the ground.
EF-3 TORNADO:
EF3's have estimated wind speeds from 136 to 165 mph. They cause severe damage to well constructed houses and large buildings. Trains are overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars are tossed and structures with weak foundations are blown away some distance.
EF-4 TORNADO:
Tornadoes with wind speeds estimated from 166 to 200 mph cause devastating damage and are rated EF4s. Well constructed houses are completely leveled. Structures with weak foundations are blown away. Cars are thrown.
EF-5 TORNADO:
EF5's have estimated wind speeds over 200 mph. The damage from these monsters is incredible! Often at the impact site, there's nothing to see because nothing is left. Strong framed houses are lifted off foundations and carried considerable distances to disintegrate.
Automobile sized missiles fly through the air farther than 100 meters.
Even steel reinforced concrete structures are badly damaged.

Some researchers, scientists and chasers get offers but often turn them down. Imagine being used to chasing and researching for the pure passion and love of the storms and advancing knowledge of these beasts and then a network or company trying to tell you how, when and where to chase. Most people say no thank you and keep pursuing their dreams on the open prairies at their usual pace at their leisure.

force experienced by wind is a square function, because at higher wind speeds not only does more air hit you in terms of the volume of it, but its collision also carries more energy per particle since its traveling faster. its the same reason why driving at like 50mph uses half as much fuel as driving at like 80mph (made those numbers up, your mileage will vary - literally lmao), because air resistance doesnt increase linearly with its relative velocity. ignoring reduced wind force from reduced air pressure, an EF5 has more than three times the wind force on objects than an EF2 despite not even being twice as fast in terms of wind speed.

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't like the way tornadoes are "rated". Damage only data is what categorizes a tornado and I think size and wind speed should also be considered when rating a tornado. It is the reason that the 2013 El Reno Tornado with estimated wind speeds over 295 mph and a size of 2.6 miles wide was only rated EF-3 while the 2013 Moore Tornado with estimated wind speeds of 210 mph and a size of 1.3 miles wide was rated an EF-5. Both tornadoes are very strong and very deadly, but because the Moore tornado went through populated areas and killed 24 people and the El Reno tornado only went over rural areas killing 8 people, the Moore tornado was rated higher than the El Reno tornado, even though scientific measurements prove that the El Reno tornado was bigger and stronger than the Moore tornado.

Manly Chapa I forget the name of the scale but you should look up the t scale if you don't already know about it which you seem like you already do. It rages tornadoes from T0 - T11 if I recall correctly and has a rating below 0 for funnels the don't touch group.

a most deficient system. they should be rated on their actual intensity
@Lessinath
@Lessinath 7 жыл бұрын
They should be, but until recently there were very few ground-level measurements of the winds directly. They built the system based off the information they had available (what was left after it went through), and haven't had time to catch up. Rebuilding the ratings system from scratch is not an easy feat - you can't just do it. You have to consult with engineers, physicists, meteorologists, insurance companies, public officials and emergency managers, and a whole heap of other people.
@PecosHank
@PecosHank 7 жыл бұрын
The problem with rating them on their actual intensity is that unless there's a doppler really close by, we won't know the actual intensity at the surface and so only a tiny fraction would actually receive a rating.
@Lessinath

@@paodequeijo4569: Usually, modern weather systems will be able to detect strong storms in advance, but always be prepared for sudden changes in the weather. Look for unusually dark clouds, and a rotating motion. If the sky turns green, then that is the dead warning signal for you to get into a strong shelter, basement or some other sturdy room in your house immediately. If you live in a multistory apartment or home without a basement, quickly go to the lowest floor with no windows and crouch against the wall with your hands above your head. This will prevent potentially dangerous debris from hitting your face if the tornado hits your house. If you don’t have any sort of shelter or closed room, get into a bathroom and crouch in the bathtub or wait inside a reinforced closet with the doors securely closed. There have been tornadoes that have destroyed everything but the sturdy bathroom or closet in homes. If you are in a car, run to a nearby ditch and crouch the same way as I mentioned above. If you happen to be driving on an empty road never try to outrun the tornado, as they can move at up to 60 mph. Lastly, if you are caught out in the open, do not take shelter under trees, and always be ready for the moment where you might need to quickly run into a safe building or shelter. Also, do not stop to look at the tornado even if you are farther away; tornadoes are known to make sudden and unexpected turns.

The EF scale is a damage scale, not a wind scale. So the extent of the damage determines the rating of the tornado. Having this in mind, there were quite a few tornados with more intense damage than Bridge Creek-Moore tornado and one that produce "scale-breaking" damage: Jarrell tornado. So, if they ever add EF6 to this scale, Jarrell tornado should be listed as one.
@alexbone98

Current science suggests that the winds actually become organized from the ground up in most cases. This means a funnel cloud that doesn't reach the ground is evidence that well-organized tornado winds have already formed. This is frequently observed with spouts - possibly because it's easy to find spouts in clear air and observe the early stages. They start with a swirls of wind, visible as a dark spot on water or a whirl of leaves. This then turns into a ring of mist or dust, that might develop a funnel or tube of condensed fog. It has been more challenging to gather evidence for tornadoes below mesocyclones, but they seem to do the same thing.

On the bus ride to school the next day we passed through that block the tornado damaged. We all were stunned by the damage because in a couple of instances trees had fallen on someone's house. EDIT: There are a couple of tornado sirens within 2 blocks from the house I grew up in. So they woke me up at 3:30-4:00 in the morning.

@Rosie6857
@Rosie6857 7 жыл бұрын
On behalf of Denise let me say we do, not that we have much use for it beyond an occasional F0. Very weak tornados (by US standards) are quite common. BTW my name is misleading though there are reasons behind it. I'm of the male persuasion.

When your siding gets ripped off by an EF zero that’s when you know you need to get new siding or Shingles. Edit: if you don’t get hit by the tornado directly.

This is great info for people who are not weather savvy! I know a lot of friends that think the width of a tornado makes it rating and then I show them video of tornadoes like Pampa in 1995. Great info Hank!

Btw thankfully we have an updated scale. EFU being added couple years ago. Just for history. 1600-2021 data: some probably back rated estimates. E(F5): 101 tornadoes -- 20,493 injuries -- 3,436 fatalities E(F4): 1,251 -- 78,716 injuries -- 10,456 fatalities E(F3): 3,949 -- >45,197 injuries -- 4,284 fatalities E(F2): 14,336 -- 37,144 injuries -- 2,269 fatalities E(F1): 23,703. -- 7,517 injuries - >327 fatalities E(F0): 32,846 -- >875 injuries -- >27 fatalities EFu: 4,588 -- 1750 injuries -- 482 fatalities Total: 80,771 tornadoes-- 191,692 injuries -- 21,641 fatalities. Moral of the story just go look at Vietnam or WW2. Even Afghanistan on the injury part and compare the injuries and fatalities. It’s scary thinking how humans are so much more destructive than our big foot prairie monsters aka tornadoes.

EF0 Tornado: Some very gusty winds with an unwelcomed giant twisting cloud EF1 Tornado: Real crap is starting up EF2 Tornado: You soiled your pants EF3 Tornado: You gotta get out EF4 Tornado: YOU MUST LEAVE OR SOMETHING GRUESOME EF5 Tornado: IF YOU DO NOT LEAVE, YOU'RE SCREWED I'm not saying if a tornado under ef3 is safe either, if you see a tornado or heard about one seek shelter immediately

I continue to be flummoxed by the rating system using damage as a significant measure of the tornado’s rating, rather than wind speed and its potential for damage, as if where humans happen to erect towns should have any bearing of the rating of a particular tornado. I get that damage is needed to more accurately measure winds, but if we know the wind speeds, as you mentioned with the EF3 you referenced, then…why wasn’t it simply bumped up, in spite of the fact that it didn’t hit midtown Manhattan? It simply doesn’t make sense.

I’ve been in a Category 5 Super typhoon, The wind speeds got up to F3 scale. But there was only EF 2 damage in my area. We got a direct hit from the eye wall. The golf course turned into a man-made lake and our large mango tree got uprooted, only to be stopped by a smaller tree from obliterating my house. Hurricanes, Cyclones and Typhoons are weaker than tornadoes, but they sure do last longer and are way bigger. I’ve even heard of them spawning tornadoes.

Something interesting is that, if you look into it, a human being could technically stand upright inside a low range EF0 tornado without being picked up or knocked down because the windspeeds go down to 65 mph, windspeeds that most adults could stand in, albeit with a little trouble, although it would probably be as hard as standing up after drinking 2 bottles of alcohol because of the unpredictable windspeed changes and twists, so it would probably knock you down, and it's also very dangerous because just because it's an EF0 now, doesn't mean it will be one in 5 seconds. It might become stronger, or it could fling something sharp at your face or fling a big rock at you. It's still an interesting fact, though.
