Toro 22040 Commercial Mower

Starting & running my Toro model 22040 mower. Bought this new in 2004. It has the Suzuki 5.5hp 2-cycle piston ported engine.
At WOT it turns about 3380 rpm's, and I've been using a 50-1 mix with Stihl oil since new. The ty-wrap on the handle prevents it from shutting down when you release the handle. Slide the ty-wrap over, and the machine shuts off. Squeeze the handle, and the self propelled transmission does it's thing. The 3-speed shifter is on the rear base of the mower- No fancy cable to shift on the handle on this model. A fuel shutoff has also been added below the fuel tank.
This is a heavy mower, and it hasn't had a whole lot of use. The rear trailing shield (grass flap) has been removed for easier manuevering.

I agree but I will say my Honda HR-214 Bags much better than my Toro - but I LOVE my Toro 2-cycle. Makes my LIBERAL neighbors cry.

absolutely awesome, i.just restored/ modified one by completely doing a ground up restoration but using powder coating instead of paint. very nice though favorite lawnmowers ever!

That thing looks beefy as hell for a simple pushmower, I like the wheels. Toro always seemed to make nice stuff, I just got an 80's toro generator made by Suzuki love it!

Best motor and mower ever. Mine is a '96 model and still runs great. I did the same tie-strap thing as you did. Too bad motor was discontinued due to emission regulations. I have never rebuilt the engine, but all parts are still available to do so. Before I bought mine new, I asked several commercial lawn services what they recommended as the best mower money could buy that wouldn't need much service. They ALL recommended this model. I leaned toward 2-cycle due to less moving parts. I run 40:1 since my other equipment calls for that ratio, and it has never caused any problems. 1996 price: $800, but considering my overall expense for all those years, that was a bargain!

used to have one of these until it was stolen. Ran like a top for about 13 years. Always started even after sitting all winter. Only ever got 1 spark plug and a few blades. The transmission eventually gave out and only worked in 2nd. Replaced the pull starter maybe twice. That was a good machine. Super quiet, brick shit house aluminum deck, ball bearing hubs, aluminum wheels. im gonna cry :(

These toros are the best commercial 21 there was at the time and they still hold their status in some areas. Unfortunately they don't have the power for mulching in wetter climates compared to todays choices in power plants (kawasaki kai) where the Suzuki shined was the power/weight ratio it was the most power in such a light package. Also having to do oil changes every week on 4 strokes gets old and you have so much oil jugs to deal with. Most crews already carry two stroke oil and I recommend opti2 or another synthetic/blend oil of your choice and they will run forever. I mix a little richer with opti than the 100:1 I mix roughly 80:1. Opti is a 1 ratio for all two strokes and I've used it on lawn boys requiring 16:1 ratio for years with no issues what so ever(oil related) using a quality oil also saves you maintenance time because you do not have to decarbonize the cylinder or exhaust ports . Only issues the suzukis have is worn carb shaft bushings and/ or ignition coil diodes failing . There is a method to repair the diodes though for about 20$ If you research. And also you can use a cheap honda carb and modify it to work. Coils and carbs are about. 150$ if you can find them. Honda carb is under 20$ new. I'll try it when the time comes.Sean pine it is impossible you have been running a two stroke without oil for 20 years! You can sometimes last a few minutes on residual oil in the fuel line and carb/crank case until it is diluted to straight gas. Quite often if it is straight gassed. The piston will stick and seize but sometimes with quality engines like the lawn boys or suzukis you could drain it and put proper mix in and oil the cylinder and you can break it loose and get some more years of use out of them . I think you actually have maybe a four stroke Suzuki or some other four stroke. What model is it? Does it have a valve cover By the spark plug with" ohv" on it? Gas has very little lubricity so it is impossible to have run for more than a few minutes without locking up .

Mine will not idle. Not sure how to fix it. I have the Commercial that is propelled and has the Blade Clutch. Mines a 22043. I figured out the idle issue. The idle jet was mis-manufactured with no hole. The Guy I bought it from said it never would idle from new and the selling Dealer couldn't fix it. I bought a new idle jet and She is perfect now.

Possibly the best model? Mine was a lucky find as I advertised on CL "Wanted Toro 2-cycle Mower". Someone wrote saying they had a old Mower from 2000 sitting in their garage for around 17 years. Did not run and not as pretty as your by any means. But recently found an OEM Carburetor for it so bought it and now it runs even better. The whole transaction was dumb luck. I'd take one in the condition of yours any day of the week. The quest for a 2-cycle Mower was after my neighbor told me to quit using my Honda Mower because I'm wrecking the Planet. So I could not resist to give him something a little more to worry about since he was so nasty. The Honda was very clean burning and my Solo Leaf Blower has a catalytic converter on its 2-cycle engine.

@@campbellpaul Hey. I was given a Toro Commercial from maybe around 1985. The Gal bought it originally from a Landscaper. She left it outside for years. Super ugly. Had a metal gas tank and no safety's. Model number tag missing. I cleaned the tank and carb and it actually runs. I think the engine cover says TV5002. Back tires are worn. Handlebar painted black super rusty. Rear tires are getting low on tread and very little paint left on the deck. Probably should go to dump but it sure runs good.

@@campbellpaul What a great price. I paid $225. Then an $84 Carburetor which was a steal. New bag $69 and new belt. The new bag is single wall and my original bag is double thickness.

Put a strap on the bar to take away a safety feature that was put on there for a reason. So if you slip into the mower which it has happen you'll have no foot to stand on. Not recommended.

If you're still having that issue you may have to tear apart the rear and bend the tabs, mine was doing the same thing and it was a good project but worth it

3380 rpm? Should be 3300 rpm. Toro officially lists the blade tip speed of this and related mowers as being 18,050 FPM which would translate to 3283 RPM.

hey got a question. i have the same one i bought brand new in 1997.... its a 2 - cycle just like yours..... now, heres the thing........ since 1997 i never put the oil in the gas. so i only been runnung straingt gas througt it. and heres 2012 and its still like new with 155 PSI of compression. i never new i have to put oil since yesterday. but how is it still running with no oil for almost 20 years.?

How is that even possible? It surely would have locked up or had a serious rod knock and had little to no compression from that. You sure you weren't using premix that you used for like a weed eater or something like that? To say that it lasted 15 years without running oil once in it is impossible

Toro made a 4-cycle Commercial Mower also with a Suzuki engine. It is not possible for ANY 2-cycle engine to survive more than a frew minutes on straight gasoline. I would love to see a picture of the engine.

Proper care goes a long way. The paint and finish on these are also very high quality. I used my regular non commerical 2 stoke for many years commercially and it always looked awesome.

@gen6363 I wonder how well your mower will perform if you adjust the engine governor to be 3000 rpm (provided the governor linkage is in the center hole)? 3000 RPM x 21" width of cut x pi / 12 = 16,493 FPM.

according to Toro 1998 was the last time they made them how 2013 with it being a 2 cycle I own a d series and f series and two Toro commercial mowers and they can be expensive and had to get parts mabie that's because I am in California

not just lawn boy had a 2 stroke theres the toro suzuki jacobsen with the wisconsin robin 2 stroke briggs made a 2 stroke push mower and so did tecumseh the tecumseh was junk
