When VC said, "It's not just Carter 15. It's all of us going up. " I felt that. Thank you, Air Canada for putting Toronto on the map 🇨🇦 🏀

It's Kawhi that put Toronto on the map with a Chip. VC brought heartache to Toronto, bolting to New Jersey!

Kawhi wouldn't have had the chance to get that chip without the impact VC had during his Toronto stint. Remember the Vancouver Grizzlies, without VC the Raptors could well have suffered the same fate......

@@rosumin38 You are totally wrong. Toronto would have never relocated due to its large market and strong ownership by MLSE. Vancouver did not have strong ownership. Toronto had a lot more investors and a larger market from the get go. Raptors just wouldn’t have been as popular, but would still exist.

@@danov3085 are you a kid? VC was the Raptors first superstar. So much so that he was the top vote getter in ASG 2000-2001. Top selling jersey worldwide. He sold out road games because fans in the U.S. wanted to see this basketball phenom. He hosted charity games in Toronto over the summer and promoted Caribanna to fellow NBA stars. He signed as a Raptor his first time as a FA because he wanted to stay. Did Kawhi do this? Nope he bailed back to LA and look where he is now. Can't even play half a season. Vince elevated the Raptors I just don't know why it took this long for the Raptors to elevate this man's jersey. 15 Forever!

@@danov3085 what are you talking about? It’s the fact that Kawhi didn’t stay why he’s not a part of Toronto. DeRozan is way more part of Toronto than Kawai ever was so let’s not compare them to the legend of Vinsanity.

VC's journey in Toronto finally came full circle. From superstar beginnings and an unbelievable fandom, to a rough departure, to a redemption moment when visiting as a Grizzly, to being forgiven and loved again, and tonight being given the highest honour a player can receive from a pro team. Well earned and congratulations VC and Toronto Raptors (+30 years and counting). What a magnificent night! Well done all.

This had me in tears numerous times. I was 19 when Vince first started as a rookie and I would tell anyone who would listen that the next Michael Jordan was playing in Toronto. Hearing him announced as a 6'6" Guard from North Carolina used to give me goosebumps when I went to the games. As good as those first 5 years were, the shortcomings of a young franchise and players too young to understand what they had in front of them (Tracy Mcgrady still talks of how he wishes he hadn't left, but he was a 19 y/o who at the time thought he needed HIS OWN team to become a star. And he went on to be amazing in Orlando, but if these 2 had stayed with the Raptors they would have at the very least made a couple of trips to the finals. Beating the Shaq/Kobe Lakers would have been tough, but they would have been more competitive than the A.I. 76ers and team's like that who the Lakers rolled during those 3 championships) and so that would eventually lead to a sad breakup that left a lot of fans angry. I'm glad that the majority of fans either see the complexities of everything that went on, OR they don't know everything and can recognize that and then some see that this is sports and things unfortunately go on that leads to a player being traded. The real anger for me back then was how bad the entire franchise fumbled. The coach i can't even remember because he was that bad and didn't last much longer. The GM was awful and it felt like a transition period across the board. Players and front office. The fact that they seemingly rushed a trade with the Nets inside the division and essentially got nothing for a franchise player made everyone more angry than they already were. Vince was not happy at the time, the team had lost key players, chemistry and it was a first year coach that would never coach in the NBA again. Vince was out with injury and fans questioned that. If they had just allowed cooling off period, fire the coach mid-season and get a Chris Bosh or Dwayne Wade in the upcoming draft, things would have been interesting. But Vince would have won us some games we probably shouldn't have won if he didn't get traded. He went on to make the Nets a relevant team for several seasons. They had Jason Kidd, but getting a super athlete like Vince who also has that beautiful jump shot. He was one of the first NBA stars who not only could do all of the incredible dunks, had a beautiful fade away jumper, but also started to nail 3s. I had never seen someone put those all together before Vince. The fact that he went on to play 22 seasons is also why he's half man half amazing. I hate that the arena is now sponsored by Scotia bank. During the VC era it had the perfect name. The ACC..Air Canada Centre. So perfect. Last but far from least is the amount of NBA stars who were created by Vince Carter playing those 6 seasons in Toronto. Players like Andrew Wiggins, Tristan Thompson, AJ Barrett and a host of others. Back to back seasons a Canadian was drafted 1st overall and they grew up watching Vince. When you really know how tough it is to make it to the NBA..and then you add to that being in Canada. It's getting easier with scouts able to watch a lot of videos before making trips to watch in person, but back when Wiggins was coming up, he was probably 10 when Vinsanity exploded onto the Toronto scene. The Raptors were a fun/cute story with the focus being The Leafs and The Bluejays who were only 5 years removed from back to back World Series championships. But Vince changed all of that and he changed it in a hurry. Winning the ROTY and bringing the lowly Raptors into the conversation of an up and coming team. They had won over 30 games and his sophomore season was him stamping the Raptors ticket into playoff team caliber. They took the Knicks to 5 games because back then the 1st round was a 5 game series. So going 5 was essentially going to game 7. I miss those series with the Knicks. The following season the Raptors meet the Knicks again and beat them. Anyway, i could keep writing and writing. Vinsanity exploded and made me a massive Raptors fan. It has been tough at times. The years of toiling away as the 11 or 12 seed without seeing much hope for the future. Today's team has the young pieces that can excite fans about the future. Grady, Barnes and Canada's RJ Barrett..but there were years, like a couple of the Chris Bosh years, where it was tough being a fan. You feel hopeless lol and then have to go wait wait wait WAIT! It's a sport. Relax 😆 but that's just a part of being passionate. Which is exactly why I watched this and cried multiple times. These sports are full of moments in time and great memories. I was going to try getting tickets for this, but they were going for A LOT of money. Pissed me off at first, but then I thought that's really cool. The fans treated this like a playoff game. This was the hottest ticket in town. I'm freaking yapping again. No way anyone reads this massive post lol but this is a testament to what Vince Carter was to this franchise. For the first few years you went to a Raptors game to see the stars from other team's. Guys you only watched on TV. The 72 win Bulls, one of their losses was in Toronto versus a scrappy veteran squad. That's the other thing, early Raptors team's were made up mostly of scrappy vets of the league. They drafted Damon Stoudamire who was way too small, thought he was better than he is and didn't want to be here. Vince was a big strong super athlete that embraced the opportunity from the moment that draft day trade happened. Love you Vince Carter. Truly deserved jersey retirement for everything he did to make this franchise take off. Truly. Without Vince the Raptors were heading in the same direction that the Vancouver Grizzlies went in. That's why I have so much to write about in regards to this moment. 🙏❤️

Well said! Couldn't have said it better myself!! When he arrived on the scene he took Canada with him to heights the Raptors hadn't seen before! I always wonder what he and Tracy could have done together. I'm sure Toronto would have been an easier choice for the FAs needed to surround them and build a championship team. The Raps vs The Lakers would have been something else! You said it all, I could go on and on as well!!! Cheers!!

Dear Vince Carter. I am from Lithuania , and I grow up watching you flying in almost every game. You was inspiration in my life , you teach me how to fly chasing my dreams in my life. And now I am financially free man, all my hard work in my life , being best dad I can , and look after my wife. I was inspired by your force and greatness when I was young . You thought me to never give up, no mater what reach my targets and dreams and make a best fly in my personal life. Remember , somewhere in this world there is a man who loves you! Best of retirement to you my GOAT ! Regards Eivinas Smolskis

I remember friends and I went to his first exhibition game in the sprite zone….far away. We were getting settled in and then I saw VC fly and slam a thunderous dunk. We all stopped moving and just stared…”who the hell was that???” …”That’s Vince Carter” …”oh god…” I think we all knew we witnessed the beginning of something. Boy did he just catapult not just himself but everyone to love the game at another level! Congrats VC

Vince is one of those few NBA superstars who were not only amazing players BUT ALSO AFFECTED THE BASKETBALL CULTURE of his era. Countless number of people didn't only TRY to play like him but also....to look like him, mimic his gestures, scowl like him, use #15, wear his Raptors jersey, buy Nike Shox, wear baggy shorts, shave their head and use a headband. That's how you know someone has become a superstar on and off the court! That's how you can say someone has affected the culture.

I can only echo many comments here about how I also became a Raptors fan or started getting into basketball because of VC. I don't think it's a coincidence that Canada made the Olympics in Basketball after a long hiatus, about 20 years after his time in Toronto since I'm sure he must have inspired a lot of kids at the time to play. I don't know if there's ever been a study done of VC's effect on Canada's basketball landscape, but it must have been huge.
