They were absolutely phenomenal!! I don't think I've ever seen another skating couple be so perfectly matched - in leg, body, arm positions, or so coordinated with the music - and smiling throughout the dance. I read somewhere regarding another Torvill/Dean video that they would NOT be Olympic Champions if they had competed against today's skaters. Christopher Dean chose their music, and in at least one instance hired a 50 piece orchestra to play the piece the way he wanted it played, choreographed most (possibly all??) of their performances. They paid attention to every detail of a performance - perfectly matching each other in both physicality and technique. I am SURE if they were in their 20's and in the world competitions in 2023 - that Torvill and Dean would be more than capable of the caliber of uniqueness, physicality, musical interpretations and THEIR UNCANNY ability to skate as one - while satisfying all requirements of today, accumulating the necessary points to be Olympic and/or world CHAMPIONS. I personally believe that they were led to each other to be skating partners and that they have NEVER BEEN MATCHED by anyone, anywhere, in any competition at any time. I bet I'm not alone in thinking this!

I was there and saw this in person, and I'll never forget it! They were simply perfection!

This has to be one of, if not the finest compulsory dance I've ever seen. Those smooth edges, the control, the fluid handholds, etc, it's close to perfection as you can get in ice dance.

Even today, there is no one like them. Incredibly difficult technical moves that they make look easy. Gorgeous edges and they skate so close together.

I love how still and steady their upper bodies are, they also have tremendous matching position unison and timimg.

The quality of their edges, their close holds, and not to mention their perfect synchronicity, are just stunning to watch and rare if not impossible to find in modern day ice dance.

WOW.... Now, THIS is a perfect CD. The edges, closeness, smoothness, knee bends, leg extentions, upper body carriage, ease, unison and they skate this at a deceptively great speed. WOW.

Not only that but they are one of the few teams who do not lose any speed or flow after step 15 when the lady does an inside three turn. I've seen so many teams have to really start pushing after the three turn. These 2 don't have to do any such thing because that's how strong their edges are. Truly exceptional.

Don't you love Betty Callaway's British understatement?! The restrained pleasure at achieving "the high point of her career as a coach" to get a 6.0 in a compulsory dance at international level and "not arguing with three of them"! Just charming!

T&D are an inspiration for any skater - they are so clean, so smooth, and so silent on the ice, they are like the ice dance version of the pair team Protopopov.

There was no doubt every judge wanted to award T&D a perfect six, but the stigma of awarding one for a Compulsory Dance prevented them. As 1980 Olympic Men's Champion Robin Cousins says 'smooth' and 'beautifully patterned'

As a non skater, I don't know what quality of edges mean and it would be great if someone can explain how you can see what the quality of the edges are when T&D skate. I did notice one thing about T&D's Westminster Waltz when compare with other couples - T&D make frequent and prolonged eye contact throughout the entire Westminster Waltz which creates the impression that they are actually dancing together, not just skating together. Take a look at this video where Karen Barber skates with Nicky Slater from the UK and Carol Fox and Richard Daley from the USA and you'll see what I mean. The eye contact, the way T&D look at each other, gives the impression that they are dancing together, not just going through the correct moves. There's a sense when they do the Westminster Waltz that they are enjoying themselves, communicating with each other. Not over thinking their moves. I don't know if I'm explaining myself very well here. :-)

you are so right about them looking at each other and seeing each other. I newer could understand why so many others don't do it. Another couple where it also was obvious that they see each other were Anisina and Peizerat and interestingly they also had been couched by Betty Callaway. Maybe it's her influence.....
