Total Annihilation: Kingdoms, or shortened to Kingdoms, is a real-time strategy game developed and released by Cavedog Entertainment on June 25, 1999. It was the last major title from Cavedog. An expansion pack, The Iron Plague, was released in 2000.
The game was released with a book titled The Chronicles of Darien which contained the storyline, rules, units, et cetera.

While this game wasn't well received by some people (usually the ones who played Total Annihilation first) I always loved it. Veruna is my favourite faction. I'm also happy it has a little fan community.

The fact that units were taking XP and were turning gold was mind blowing to me at the time, looking back I think it had some great stuff but went under the radar for some Reason. I'm actually still looking for rts with units that level up a lot

For all the crap this game gets, the way Cavedog presented the games campaign as a history of the civilizations, (all the art, quotes and lore etc.), was truly original and years ahead of anything else at the time.

I really enjoyed it. The voice acting leaves a lot to be desired compared to say Starcraft and brood war, but the presentation like a historical chronicle sort of how Age of Empires 2 did it (or would do it?) is really nice. I like the medieval art and stuff.

I loved this game so much. I would kill and Rez each factions priests and then conjure a dragon from each faction, so I have 4 dragons in total. I would also build walls all around my corner of the map with canon towers and then put more canons outside in front of the walls so I was completely protected. I want to play this game again now.

uhhhhm no. no you did not build walls in a corner to be protected, because each indestructible piece of wall would delete a precious unit slot. you have a food cap of around 200 things, as the game doesn't differenciate between units & structures. so, walls and towers crippled your offensive capabilities hard. but maybe you did this once or twice before realizing the food-thing and now remembered only half of the story, after 1/4 century... x)

This game and Machines 2 where so ahead of their time omg. Switching to first person view and directly commandeering any unit in M2 and the ability to Rez builders from enemy faction in TA:Kingdoms blew my mind back then. Games where so much better then. I couldn't have dreamed of the crazy graphics and computing power we have now, but there's little else in terms of ingenuity.

this game is crazy. its so hard to kill anything so i always had to build larger and larger armies. i made an army so big and theres no population limit. it was several screens big and crashed the computer.

there's a population limit of ~200 and each structure requires 1 too. i would assume tho that you confused this game with another game of about the same age & graphics: *Heroes of annihilated Empires* in HOAE you don't have an upper cap, you're only limited by finding space for supply buildings. you also have a fancy hero and 4 races, altho those awesome devs were neer allowed to finish their campaigns and so there's only 1 instead of 4, but that 1 campaign is so far above whatever the industry came up with in the meantime that it's still a overall fantastic game, despite the missing campaigns for 3 of the races.

I loved everything about this game! Having fitst cut my teeth on TA, I felt TAK brought a breath of fresh air and a more organic, Fantasy/Adventure aspect to the franchise! The colors, music, characters, voice acting and samples ("They got me!" LOL!) and story were a nice alternative that the harsh, lifeless, robotic monotony of TA didn't provide. Thanks for posting!

yeah for sure TA is a masterpiece but it feels very sterile maybe impersonal? Compared to Starcraft that just oozed character. I played the crap out of this game. A truly unique title.

I still play this game. I have a dedicated laptop that is older than the hills but it still plays this game just fine. I like to set up some early defenses and patrols and let the game run all day while I'm at work. I have run the same battle for weeks just to see what happens. The kill counts are always a shock to see. One of the best things about this game is that the enemy doesn't stop attacking you, unlike other games that kinda go into hibernation after the first couple of bouts. I like to play Zhon. The ability to make harpies and go capture other players builders and attack them with their own kind always seemed appealing to me. :)

I remember being the creepy faction and making so many bats. Individually they are very weak but I made so many they were a cloud that could fly anywhere and drop fire turds.

The sad thing on this game is just not having an "Attack Move"... This is Just the patrol button in that regard. And of course, the clumsy unit production, that appears only on the bottom of the building. You are f***ed if you play in the south and need to reach north (did some multiplayer and it was a problem)

TBF that was a problem for ALL games at the time. You could usually force spawn units on another side of the building with some sim city. Also pretty sure you can click attack and it functions as attack move know?

it's tuesday morning now, i bought this game on GOG on friday and just got finished with the campaign. jeeeeez that last mission............ 3 hours, not the longest of all, but what that AI sent at me, those masses................................. X'D games before 2000 just were DIFFERENTLY difficult! next up on my retro-playlist: WET/LULA - the sexy empire, and then i'll see, probably Vangers - One for the Road.

Buy the GOG version that I'm sure you'll be able to play on Windows 10. The disk versions are a bit of a problem for these days, unfortunately.

The first lokken quest is so easy lmao how it took this guy more then an hour to get anywhere is crazy. 🤣 All you need to do is spam 100 executioners and raid the town.
