Recently I had total hip replacement surgery. Anterior approach. I chose this approach because it had the quicker recovery time and the least amount of restrictions.
Follow me on my firs t4 weeks of recovery.

Pretty much my experience as I’m 3 weeks post op with THR anterior style. 69 and in good shape, walked a mile with the dog yesterday and felt it last night. Ice therapy about 4 to 5 times daily and keep it loose by moving every hour; walking around the house or light exercises. Tylenol n aspirin pain therapy since day 3; don’t like narcotics and constipation that comes with it. Goal is to walk 9 holes at 12 weeks! Hope my golf game improves too but it’s always a good walk.

I had Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery on Aug. 11 early am. That night l woke up with a horrible Rash around my surgery incision. It was extremely painful, itchy, and sensitive to anything touching it! Doc put me on Prednisone for 7 days and Rash came back again! Back on Prednisone for another 7 days plus Extra strength Cortisol cream (l went thru 3 large tubes, No sleep now 14 nights!! I had no Aide but my neighbor took my dog out for me every day. I was house bound over 50 days. I finally got rid of Rashes and began PT homebound. It's now Oct 13 on a Cane. I can drive small trips Still have a limp but getting stronger.

@@FrankGuest Actually at 5 weeks post op. Doing OK. Lot more pain than I imagined. Been walking without a cane for a week now. Still limping more than I think I should be at this time. Physical therapist thinks so too. I feel I have lots of pain at the end of the day if I walk too much. Morning not too bad. Looks like it'll be a long slow slog up the side of the recovery hill. Thanks.

Came across your video. It is helpful to see what to expect. I’m having right hip replacement May 30, 2024.Over a period of 10yrs I was treated aggressively with high doses of steroids for chronic migraines and reactive airway disease. Unfortunately I developed AVN (avascular necrosis). The pain is now unbearable. Over time it’s progressively gotten worse. Your video helped me to have an idea of what to expect on the other side. Omgoodness I watched this and looked at my husband asking “am I doing something wrong?!” Because I’m 17 days post op and I’m still swollen and in pain. I can’t put full weight on quite yet and use a combination of Walker for distance walks and the cane for stairs and short trips. I have a knee problem same leg no one wanted to look at till after the hip replacement still. But with therapy they are hoping it fixes itself which is doubtful because I’ve had 3 knee surgeries:(. My hubby always says “you should have rode motorcycles versus playing sports all those years!” Because he has had zero surgeries to my 10+ in my lifetime!

Hi Frank, Thank you for taking the time to make these posts. My name is Pascal. Small world! I just had left leg anterior hip replacement on 14 Nov 22 in Sydney Australia. Im 45 and had started the whole hip op journey at 40 like yourself , I also wanted to wait til i was at least 55-60 yrs old but it was clear that wasn't going to be an option. Like yourself i ride but the hip developed osteo arthritis on its own, no falls ,crashes,in fact not a single thing trauma wise up to 40. I did a lot of Thai boxing in Thailand since my early 30's and have always been active but not a good enough reason for it to happen. Just a genetic predisposition type of bad luck. One surgeon said the formation of the femoral heads had shapes that were destined to annoy the acetabulum and eventually cause wear and tear. Watching your first video brought back my first week in an instant. Almost day for day identical. However after 4 days in hospital recovery i was lucky to get a full week as in patient at a really cool private rehab center called Walper, insurance covered that. So my second week was really easy as i had meals done, meds organised , physio and hydrotherapy twice a day and a lot of rest and icing. Felt a bit spoiled but paid a bundle for everything so why not. Managed to attach my ps4 for some guilty gaming and hours of streaming! Im now on a single walking stick and will head home Thursday 24/11/22. then i will do my own rehab at home and visit the center just twice a week. Your dead right, daily work and getting moving again is vital for a quicker recovery. I actually stopped all pain meds, had palexia instant and slow release, both stopped since Tuesday 22nd. No Pain but definitely feel discomfort after too much time on feet. Rest, panadol and ice fixes that but i think ill use something stronger on and off when im at home. I've got nothing against meds, just didn't like the fog it created in my mind. Your clip was informative and very encouraging, kinda wish i documented my op as well to help motivate others. I might get that chance in a few years from now as the right leg ,although really strong and pain free ,is unfortunately diagnosed with grade 3-4 OA!!!! We decided not to do a double as the right leg is currently doing perfectly well. Im kinda glad about that but you still wonder if a double is better in the long run. Ill keep watching your progress videos. Something tells me your right back on that motor bike and pain free these days, i can only dream for that time to arrive and get back to riding and if the universe allows it back to surfing. Did you manage to improve those dance steps? lol All the best from down under. (more of an essay than a comment i know)

I had my left hip replaced 10 days ago. My walking experience is very similar to yours. I can currently walk with no cane, and drive (just to PT), I have muscle pain in my leg but as you say it is to be expected. The Doctor and Hospital videos make it sound like easy surgery, but really, it's quite the opposite. They cut open your hip, retract your muscles, dislocate your hip, saw off your bone and stuff a titanium rod in your femur! And then there is the freezing medicine, anesthesia, morphine, fentanyl, antibiotics, and oxy. It is quite a trauma on your body. I still take Tylenol and have trouble sleeping, but it's only been 10 days! PT is rough. They are assertive. This week the surgeon will remove the bandage. I don't anticipate any issues. I am very excited about my hip no matter what. The old one was useless. Thanks for your video!

Everything you said about the surgery is correct. It’s a very intense procedure. That said, I am so happy I got it done. Your 14 days post operation now. The trouble sleeping at night and soreness around the incision will persist for a while. But it will get better. My hip is 3000% better now than before the surgery.

Hey Frank, I just want to express my thanks for creating this video. You've reassured me in a way that nothing else has since I got the news yesterday. I thought I pulled my groin or hip flexor at first, but that was six months ago. I've been limping ever since. Sure it's been getting better very slowly, but I was in denial. After the doctor gave me the news, although I thought I was ready to hear the worst, it still took me a bit to wrap my brain around it and accept that I had to get the surgery. Thank you again. I will continue to rewatch your video throughout my recovery for your positive attitude and inspiration.

Keep in mind the recovery from 0% to about 80% happens quickly. (At least for me) That last 20% could take up to a year. But I think you will find that at 80% recovered, you will feel better than you do right now. I was surprised how quickly I started resting on my new hip. I never did that before. I always leaned slightly to the right side while standing. Now I don’t even think about it but lean towards my new hip. But please Listen to your doctor and be careful with your new hip.

Hello Sir from NJ! Scrolling around youtube while reliving some youtube research memories on my June 10, 2022 right hip replacement and came upon yours. I can relate definitely to your video. I was up and walking within 4 hours of the surgery (with assistance from a walker) with PT and OMG I was amazed on how far I was able to walk. Getting over the initial "wonderment" of even standing up straight was crazy! At 72, I finally decided to go thru with it. My surgeon and staff were amazing - oh yes - thru the butt too. Pix are available upon request. lol. 2 weeks of visiting PT and OT and then 6 weeks of PT at my local hospital - they picked me up 3 x's a week. Actually drove to PT the last 3 weeks. Glad you had such a great recovery. I was walking hours after surgery as well. I went home same day and was driving by week 2. I had physical therapy at my home 2 times a week for 6 weeks then never again. And you are right, good PT is key. I’m so glad I had it done. My new hip is much stronger then the one I came to earth with. Thanks for watching!

I am scheduled for THR on May 23, 2024. I have had a series of things happen to make it very challenging to get myself ready. First My surgeon found I had a rash in my groin. I cleared it but missed a bit farther back in my leg so now am treating that spot. Then at my pre surgery pgysical the testing showed I had a urine infection so I had to takenstrong antibiotics 4 times a day for 1 week. I cleared the infection. Then had to have denal work just before the 3 week cutoff to be ready for surgery and my surgeon moved the date from May 20 to MAY 23 TO BE JUST 3 WEEKS AFTER THE DENTAL WORK. Then the dentist had a cancellation and was able to get me in on April 30, 3 days earlier. I keep having fears something else will come up to cancel or delay my surgery. I have been doing the pre-suurgery exercisessince March 1 and am loking firward to beung able to walk without supporting me weight on my arms. I really have had very little pain with the bone on bone hip but cannot take a step.without holdding to my walker ot the table or counter in my kitchen and in my barh I use the vanity counter and the grab bars because the rollator walker will not go through the door. I also use the grab bar attached to my tub and the vanity top to sit and get up first on the toilet and now using a seat riser on my toilet. I now have a bath seat I can get up from so will not be trappwd in the tub like I was last Oct. when it took me an hour to get up and out of the tub after a shower because my small round bath seat tipped when I tried to get up and I cannot pull up but must push up from my seat. I do what is neded to move safely with my bad hip. Looking forward to walking after the surgery since I have been usung my walker for almost 9 years as my.hip had gottwn worse.

Thanks Frank My surgery was this past Thursday at 815am. The first 72 to 96 hrs were pretty tough in various ways. Mostly nausia and not sleeping at night but worked that out with ginger and short sleeps during the day. I get up every hr to walk a bit. Not too bad considering. My pain is the stiches and swelling around it but today starting day 5, im feeling more relief in general moderately that is.Thanks for your video. It is helpful and a guiding light! Im hoping to get on my drums and rehearse with the band a bit the beginning of week 6. I had the anterior surgery like you so I hope this is realistic. What an experience! Enjoy and keep on keeping on!
