65 and I'm 5 months post surgery and still need a cane to walk normally without a waddle. And I have pain when I return from my daily walks. I feel like there is something wrong with me when people say they are back to normal at 3 months or sooner. I'm here to see what more I can do to get back to normal. Perhaps I need a wobble board or intensify my exercises.... I don't know. I can't trim my toe nails w/o hurting and washing my feet is difficult w/o a sponge on a stick and I still use a shower chair. Frustrated!

Same here. 66, 6 months out from fracture and total hip replacement. I am thankful for these videos because my at home therapists gave me just minimal stuff to do and never told me to increase or change. Still walk with cane and with a waddle. Doc says I'm doing great and doesn't want to see me for a year. I feel very unsteady on my feet and am so afraid of tripping or falling again. Still have to use shower chair, but I did before because of bad knees. I still have stiffness in hip, and soreness, but no bad pain. I can bend down and touch toes and pick up stuff off floor. I walk a few steps in house without cane, but feel very insecure. I want to go on a trip for our 40 year anniversary, but I am just not up to traveling yet unless it's by car, and I hate long road trips! LOL

Just had my second THR a month ago. Everyone knows that the minimally invasive procedure ("anterior approach"), which is widely used in my area, leads to much more rapid recovery. I was able to walk while carrying my walker just in case the day after outpatient surgery. So I did some of these exercises during the first two weeks after surgery.

I also had both hips done, 6 weeks apart, the last one 7 weeks ago. Direct Anterior approach. These exercises are easy for me at this point. Still stirring up muscles that haven't been used for years and working on range of motion. NO regrets whatsoever. I feel 20 years younger.

Can you give me an advance video. I'm in Week 11. I'm just under 60, heart rate under 50bmp, already can walk 5-10 km day, crab walk, one legged bridges (all times 30), etc. Doing 50-100 push ups/day; 30 dips, exercise on Olympic rings. When can I skip again? When can I get into a kiyak? When can I jog - how long? Should I get on the exercise bike? How long? So many questions and please don't say check with your doctor - it's a catch all but they really don't know a lot.

I'm very very frustrated with the hip replacement I had 3 years ago. I've been to physical therapy twice and I went to a second surgeon to see if he could find out why I can't walk without a limp, and now hiking is out of the question. He said my bone scan and the prosthesis all looks good so he sent me to another round of physical therapy. With physical therapy I reached a point where they said my range of motion and strength were good but I still walk with a limp that makes long walks and hiking a thing of the past. The second surgeon did say it could be a soft tissue issue but didn't tell me what could be done about it. Might you have any recommendations for someone in my situation? It's very frustrating because everyone my age (68) that I've met who have had hip replacement couldn't be happier with their new walking freedom.

Because I waited exceedingly long before I had surgery. I was more than terrified and had to reach a point of considering two options: self termination or surgery. Anyway as a result of waiting my hips shifted, and I developed lower back/disc issues. I was told that my hips may shift back (if not there's always another surgery. 😂 Once was enough.) and I currently walk with a distinct limp. However I am not in pain and life is much better. Keep trying and exercising. We can only do our best and see what happens. Good luck.

Do you have leg length discrepency? Meaning is The operated leg longer than the other leg? That can sometimes occur with THR. The extra length is needed sometimes for stability. Sometimes, the discrepency isn't noticeable but if there is a bigger difference then that can cause a limp. And the solution is to put shoe lift or riser inside the shoe to raise the shorter leg up. That may not be your problem but just thought I would mention it. The surgeon should have told you though if that were the case. I hope you find solutions and you will be feeling better.

I am about 10 days to left hip replacment on May 23. I get so angry when the nurses tell me I need to learn how to walk with a walker for after surgery because I have needed a walker for about 9 years and cannot walk a step since mid Oct. Because my hip has got so bad. I also got the tools for after THR and am using them now. I got a second foot lifter so I can get in my van easier. I also got a 4 inch folding stool to easier get into my van after the surgery, it is half as high as the taller stool that is too tall to use. I also have a 3 inch folding stool to use next to my tub so lifting my leg is easier to do to get in and out. I finally can put on my support socks with the sock aid and can take off the socks with the clothing hook and put on my shoes with the long shoehorn. I doneed to usea grabber to pick up socks Nd other things off the floor becauseI cannot bend down topick anthing from the floor unless it is about 2 to 3 inches off the floor a ND then I can just reach it but the grabber makes it so much easier to do that. Ì have had to ask my son to help me with the socks and shoes until I got these aids. I have also got a good bath stool that does not tip when I push on it to get up in the bath after a shower, so no more getting stuck in the tub for an hour like I did last October. I gave that small round stool and a square stool with arms that I can not use in my tub to the local thrift store where I got the small round stool several years ago and used it ntil I couldn't get up from it. I get so get angry at nurses who say I must have a 2 wheel walker so I can get up of the toilet a and in or out of the tub with it. My small bath has a vanity and grab bars attached to the tub that I use to get up and sit on my raised toilet seat. I also have grab bars next to the tub and under the window behind the tub that I use as well. I have taken photos of my bath so I can show these nurses how my home Is set up because 7:58 my late husband needed several of these aids so I have some already. I really resent anyone who insists that they know more than I do about how my home is arranged and ready for me for after surgery. My front door is probably blocked for a walker, but I never use it unless getting the mail and then will use my cane from close as I can get with my walker or I use my late husband 's one hand walker to get to the front door. I had forgotten about it and it is a lifesaver for tight spots.

I'll be six months postop May 2021. I'm still using a cane to get around. When I'm not using the cane, I limp with an awkward gait. My surgeon advises against a lift for the other leg but I feel I'm off balance, which is how wreaking havoc with my other hip. Also, PTA suggested I get sturdier shoes because I was walking on my arch. Bought a pair of shoes at The Good Feet Store. Asked them about orthotics or shoe lift but they won't do anything until I'm six months out. I'm getting tired of the cane but I can't walk without it. My brother had bilateral hip replacement in 2019 (June and December) and has had NO issues. He did need a lift. I don't know what to do or even how to measure for a lift. Do I now need to see a podiatrist? I'm so over this!

Hi Susan! I had a total hip replacement 3 years ago and I'm still limping around after two rounds of PT and consulting with a second surgeon. Maybe I need to try a lift. Do you wear the lift on the same side as the replaced hip? No one ever mentioned a lift to me before.

I hope you're doing better by now. I'm 4.5 months post hip replacement. My new hip increased leg length 3/8" longer than my other leg. I got a lift a month ago. What a difference it made. My other hip and lower back were starting to hurt and my gait was way off. I went to an orthotist for a proper assessment.

I'm on week 7. I've been exercising since 8 years old, 56 now, and trained to world championship thai boxing level, trained 4 hours a day. So day 1 I took mini weights and power band to hospital. I did 15 mins upper body, morning, after and evening the 3rd day while in hospital, doing 500 ankle pumps per day and leg 500 leg extensions on my good side. keeping my operated hip totally straight with no movement . Phase II - 5 days out of hospital , I adjusted my skipping rope to be able to do one handed "skipping", with support strong power band , shoulder press, arm curls and 500 reps leg extension. As I'm 6"4 and 215 lbs I have a very strong gaming chair to sit and do all of these exercises. PHASE III- Is go back to the gym in week 3 after surgery, easy stationary bike 10km a day , easy weights for just 1 hour exercise per day. PHASE IV - and V , after 4 weeks I started easy 500m walks , 1km walk and now 4km with walking sticks as a base with 200 press-ups, 120 chin-ups, 100 reps bench press with easy 150 lbs. PHASE VI - started in week 6-7 , right now. I went out on my mountain bike , and stepped up the gears slowly and blasted out 25km cycle with max speed at 35kph. I'm up to 1.5 hours of workouts per day, hip is great , as I rotate ice packs and warm packs all day long, lie down for afternoon 30 mins. by week 9 ill be power walking, flying on the mountain bike and have 90% of all upper body power back, to get to benching 300lbs again. NOTE - I have been training for 45 years , 7 days a week and rehab for athletes is completely different in stages that people that never exercised before, but as always be very careful , everything in well defined stages , rest , elevate , and ice and you can get back to 2 to 4 hours of workouts per day.
