I had rt knee done in March, and left one done in June. Im so happy they are done. My knees hurt so bad before- burned all the time. Now (end of sept) i can do practically anything- walk, swimming all summer, lite hiking and even back at gym doing bike, light squats, light lunges and even leg press! Biggest issue is still being deconditioned, and some mental blocks saying that im still healing. Im 62 and so happy i had these surgeries!! Love these videos!!

I am 11 months out from left knee replacement and 4 months out from right hip replacement at age 69. I had been doing powerlifting before all this and have been doing light squats and Romanian deadlifts to rehabilitate the quads, hamstrings and glutes. Also to strengthen the piriformis muscle that was detached for the hip replacement. I am now squatting with 55 kg and Romanian deadlifting with 60 kg. I've been taking it slowly but a couple of days ago could not resist trying conventional deadlifts and lifted 100 kg without a problem. Not sure whether I will try to continue progressing or be more conservative, which I am sure my surgeon would prefer.

I’ve been doing heavy lifting for 2 years now. It’s the only way I got full strength in my quads back. Deadlift at 195, squats at 100, and overhead press at 70 lbs. No knee pain whatsoever. Before I started weightlifting, I couldn’t hike or even walk properly.

I have been single handed sailing my 36' ketch since week 11. I am now 7 months out and my mobility has improved quite a lot over the last four months. The thing about sailing is that it is a 4-5 hour continuous workout. I find that my knee is pretty tired at the end of a day on the water. At first it took 2-3 days to recover, but now I am good to go the next day. I also find that I can kneel. Getting into the kneeling position is worse than being in the position. Two weeks ago I spent about 15 minutes kneeling to do some work on the boat with no issues. I do have to be careful not to over bend my knee when I kneel, but my knee it very good about letting me know when I am at my limit. My surgeon said sailing and kneeling were fine.

I’m 54 & scheduled for my 1st TKR mid Sept (it’s end of July). I’m hoping I can get back to walking, cooking, getting in/out of a vehicle & grocery shopping(my Husband has to do EVERYTHING now that both knees are bone on bone; I’ve had multiple spinal surgeries including 4 fusions but I could still function even chronic pain but not being able to walk properly due to so much knee pain has completely shut my life down). I Pray TKR helps.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Interesting comment regarding downhill skiing. I happen to live in an area where there is downhill skiing all around us. In fact, I had my surgery only a few miles from a ski resort. Therefore, my surgeon holds a free ski day at the resort for any of his knee replacement patients if they are at least 12 weeks out. A friend of mine, who had surgery the same day as me, and is a ski instructor, was skiing with caution 12 weeks after surgery. However, since I have only skied five times in my life, and all when I was much younger, I will not be taking up skiing at this point! Still debating whether or not I will return to ice-skating and/or skate skiing. Best of luck to all of you recovering from knee replacement surgery!

Thanks for all the advice, guys! I am 55, currently 2 months out from TKR. After swimming laps for 25+ years, I got back in the pool 6 weeks after surgery. The water feels great, and the gentle knee movement of crawl and backstroke helps loosen the stiffness. However, my very knowledgeable aqua therapist told me to wait quite a while to start on breaststroke because of the twisting motion in its kick. Just thought I'd mention that for other swimmers out there.

Before my knee replacements I read somewhere that the one thing you should never do was slydive....I was kind of relieved as friends have tried to talk me into trying it, and I've come close to agreeing although I'm pretty terrified of it. But afterwards, when I asked my surgeon about activities he said tandem jumps would be fine...yikes, no excuse after all.

I am 72 y/o and having a TKR Oct 26, 2021. I had a partial medial compartmental replacement on my right knee in 2014 and was very serious about rehab and continued to do exercises recommended by PTs for more than a year. Can't wait until next Spring too get back on the golf course. I just purchased a stationary bike so that I can do some low impact exercise throughout the winter. (We live near St. Louis, MO.) We plan to go to the National Parks in the northwest, i.e. Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Glacier in September of 2022. We would like to go on a white water raft ride that is not extreme. Do you think that would be acceptable? We will also do some light, short hikes in the parks. Please reply. I enjoy your videos.

Where would trail running fall into? I’m not talking extreme distance--I’m talking 5 miles or so with proper shoes? Pre TKR I used to trail run at least twice a week anywhere from 3-6 miles per run. Pre- TKR-this is one of the major activities I wanted to be able to do post TKR. I had this conversation with my doctor. He said we will evaluate my rehab and then make a decision. What are your thoughts?

I had a knee replacement done about seven years ago, I’m now 62. I can tell you you don’t want to kneel on that surgical knee. It will hurt like heck years out. It’s like having metal directly under your skin. It’s not padded like the normal knee.
@maehiggins90612 жыл бұрын
I don’t agree with the kayaking being a no. I am 68 and was back in my kayak at 8 weeks after a total replacement. I can see that getting in and out can be challenging even if you haven’t had a knee replacement, however it is no big deal to keep that leg flexing and move it around while paddling.

I’ve had both of mine done within the last year. The first two weeks are brutal, but you can do it! I was driving within 3 weeks both times, and I’ve steadily improved over the months since I had them done (L, 7/19, R, 11/19). I found it helpful to keep a written record of meds and exercises every day. I did everything my PT told me to do and am so thankful to be pain free-at least in my knees. BTW, I’m female, 61, not in great physical condition, but trying. You’ll be a stronger person mentally once you get through this.

Was walking 1.5 miles daily after right TNR but cut back to spin bike as my only real exercise. Low impact on knees. Still need more time. Can't imagine that I will be running 12 miles per week (4mi x 3 days) ever again. Surgeon did thumbs down on it too. Too hard on the plasticware. We'll see.
