Really? One of the best sci-fi authors ever...? I saw "Blade Runner" in the cinema in 1982 and was bored to death. I didn't even finish watching the film and that hurt back then as a student... Could it be that your point of view is a little too American? Spoiler... There are 120 million fewer of you than live in the EU alone. And that doesn't include Norwegians, Swiss or Brits, to name just a few. You are not a benchmark for anything... Is that clear?
@lonelyboy197723 күн бұрын
@@melchiorvonsternberg844 Blade Runner is one of the worst book to screen adaptations of all-time. You should *NOT* judge the status of Philip K. Dick on the basis of that godawful film, which doesn't do justice to the book Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? Few readers would dispute his place as one of the greatest and most influential science fiction writers.

@@lonelyboy1977 As a European, I see it differently. The Man in the High Castle was the only one of his novels that I liked, even though the book was full of clichés. One of the things to keep in mind with these (1990’s and forward) movies is the advent of computer enhanced graphics added to special effects. It wasn’t widely called cgi yet (or widely used at the time), but it was like a brand new toy for everyone in the business. So in some movies you’ll notice scenes like the large lady at the customs checkpoint and her exploding head. Scenes that seem overly long for its purpose, and maybe out of place, depending on your viewpoint. But for people of my generation, it was all brand new and added to the fun of action and sci-fi movies. It helped push practical effects artists to new heights, as they probably felt the incursion of oncoming cgi.

Michael Ironside (Cohaagen's goon) is an extremely decent guy in real life despite being typecast as villains for most of his career. Was watching a behind the scenes from this movie and he was giving an anecdote about how when Arnold found out that Michael's sister was recovering from surgery during the filming of this movie, he would call her from the phone in his trailer after filming had completed for the day with words of encouragement until she recovered.

Great reaction! Philip K. Dick wrote the short story this is based on, and one of the main themes in his work is the ambiguity of reality. So there are aspects of this film that make it appear to be a dream (one of the main ones is the image of Melina at Rekall), but it can also be taken as reality. The reason Cohaagen doesn't want to turn on the reactor is because the fuel for the reaction is turbinium, which is what he is mining and sending to Earth. It's very valuable, so burning it up to produce air eliminates all his profits. Turbinium might also be the only reason for a colony on Mars, so although Mars now has air it still might not be a viable colony (it's unclear whether Mars is capable of producing it's own food, machinery, etc.). In any case, it's a fun film with classic Arnold one-liners and fighting...

The whole air machine releasing vapour would not save Arnie as it's an atmospheric pressure thing. The reason their eyeballs were popping was the pressure differential between their bodies and the atmosphere, in order for the pressure to equalise the gas would have to cover the entire planet and gravity pressurise it all.
