There are 3 types of elves in Warhammer - high elves, dark elves and wood elves, but they all have a common origin. Malekith - the witch king of the dark elves was once exiled from his mother and now wants to regain power in the kingdom of the high elves on Ulthuan.

Since you watched most of the trailers released thus far in one go there's no quick way to explain all of them. Most of the races, units and characters you see have several pages of lore attached to them and the same goes for the characters. The basic rundown for races is that they each draw from classic representations of fantasy races and or history and then it gets cranked up to 11. Here's a quick rundown of some of the races: - The Empire of Man is basically steampunk fantasy Holy Roman Empire. They're fairly technologically advanced as far as humans go, with access to muskets (called "handguns" in-universe), cannons, rocket batteries and even steam powered tanks but they are being constantly attacked on all sides by the Warriors of Chaos, Vampires and their undead hordes, Orc and Goblin tribes, Norscan raiders and the mercifully rarer Daemon incursions into the mortal plane. They have disciplined full-time professional armies, known as state troops, which contrast with most other human nations in the Warhammer world. The Empire is constantly beset by internal problems as well, as a result of being an electoral monarchy with highly autonomous religiously and culturally distinct provinces, each ruled by counts and dukes who have their own interests. To add to that, Chaos cults are constantly infiltrating imperial society and are in turn rooted out and hunted down by the Witch Hunters of the Order of the Silver Hammer (basically the Empire's inquisition). - The Dwarfs (Dawi in their tongue) are one of the elder races, together with the Elves, and used to have a continent spanning empire focused mostly on the mountain ranges of the Old World. Their Empire shrunk to a fraction of its size after being engaged in a protracted war with the Elves (long before the events of Total War), a war which they won but ended up severely weakening both them and the Elves. Greenskins (the collective term for Orcs and Goblins) took advantage of their weakened state and the fact their Empire suffered a myriad of natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, to launch massive attacks on their Karaks (city-fortresses built into the mountains). The Skaven (the ratmen you see on the trailers) did much the same but attacked from deep below the earth, deeper than even deepest Dwarf mines thanks to their globally spanning tunnels, catching them by surprise. The Dwarfs put up a hell of a fight and survived but lost most of their cities to their ancient enemies. This has resulted in Dwarfs being often grim individuals that are convinced their race is a dying one. They are also vengeful and obsessed with grudges and keep all of the grudges against their race recorded in The Great Book of Grudges (which is a mechanic in the game). -The Elves have an extremely long and complicated history that I can't hope to summarize adequately, but they are separated into three distinct cultural-religious groups. The Dark Elves (Druchii), High Elves (Asur) and Wood Elves (Asrai). The Druchii split with the Asur during a massive civil war known as the Sundering, while the Asrai split peacefully with the Asur by migrating into the magical forest of Athel Loren. The Dark Elves are cruel and merciless slavers, who practice dark magic and often sacrifice captives to Khaine the Lord of Murder, the elven god of war, violence and destruction. The High Elves on the other hand are the polar opposite and see the Druchii as irredemable criminals and barbarians. They don't often engage with other races beyond trading, preferring instead to protect their island-continent homeland of Ulthuan and the few remaining colonies of their once globally spanning empire. They see themselves as the protectors of Order and heavily oppose Chaos and their daemonic forces but believe themselves to be a doomed race, much like the Dwarfs. The Wood Elves on the other hand try to live in harmony with nature and the spirits of their forest home and are extremely isolationist, protecting Athel Loren against any intruders, either by misdirecting or just straight up murdering them. If the Dark Elves are evil and the High Elves are good, the Asrai would be considered morally "neutral", representing the bounteous and positive side of nature as well as its savage and negative side. There's a lot more to it and to all the other races I haven't even mentioned it but if you have questions feel free to ask.

Everything has been greatly simplified. There are no "good" and "evil" factions in Warhammer. And the High Elves aren't saints either... They are arrogant, racist, and schemers. And the Dark Elves... Sometimes you can even sympathize with them. Yes, they are cruel Nazis who practice sacrifice, but you will remember the story of how they became like this, and how it all ended. By the way, these are small things, but you haven't listed all the varieties of elves. Each of their races also has a sub-race. High Elves have Sea Elves, Dark Elves have Night Elves, Wood Elves have Amber Elves (Amber Elves are also known as "Eonir" or Elves of the Laurelorn Forest. )

@@Dremorich Well that's true, I did simplify it for the sake of brevity, after all this short summary alone took several paragraphs. You are also right that "good" or "evil" aren't too applicable in Warhammer and if I wanted to be more precise I should have used the tabletop categorization of "Order", "Destruction" and "Chaos" but that would have taken some extra explaining that I just didn't wanna bother with. I decided to go with good and evil because they're more easily digestible concepts for people new to Warhammer and also because it's not too far off to say that High Elves for example are, generally, better people morally speaking than Dark Elves. I do think you can empathize with individual Dark Elves such as Malus Darkblade (even if he's not a bastion of good morals either lol) but that's quite different from believing the Dark Elves as a culture and civilization are a shining model of good behavior. And yes, it's correct that there are many subraces/subfactions in the setting but hell if I were to mention them all just in regards to the races I tried to explain in my original comment we'd be here all day. There's no point in overwhelming newcomers to the universe with a lot of, admittedly cool, extra lore just for the sake of being thorough. Just in order to do the Eonir justice I'd have to dedicate them several paragraphs.

the ones titles (usually) the something and the something are usually adding units and either heroes or lords to a current faction - Total war games are usually rated pg13 I think, the blood for the blood god, adds blood and gore to the game (as dlc) Mortal Empires made factions from total war 1 & 2 to 1 big map and you can choose from any of the factions to fight. This seems a little more confusing if you haven't played since there's no 'you start with the factions' , game nr 2 adds these etc

Rats, called Skaven, are the most technologically advanced race in Warhammer fantasy, using guns, mortars, plagues and even nuclear weapons. They are everywhere in this world, as they live underground and connect almost the entire world with tunnels, except for Ulthuan, where the High Elves live (the Elves have a magical barrier that prevents the Skaven from tunneling there, if I remember correctly). You could say that the most hated enemy of rats will be dwarves, because they also live underground, but this is not true. The greatest enemy of the Skaven race is other Skaven. For this reason, they hate each other and constantly plan to kill the other in order to become the strongest of them and join the "Council of 13", where the leaders from the strongest clans meet and listen to their god the Great Horned Rat. That's the reason why they can not conquer entire world, even though Skavens are the most technologicaly advanced race. Why they are most advenced? It's simple: 1. Skavens use this material named Warpstone, highly "radioactive" (this light green stones) and with a lot of energy accumulated, 2. There are lots of rats, ratslaves and slaves from other races, so they using their weapons on them to test what will happen. There is even a story about that Skaven launch a missle to the one of the moons, and destroyed it cus it was green so they thought it was made form the Warpstone Warpstone for the Skaven is currency, fuel for their machines, drugs, ammunition, and even food for some of them, There is nothing more valuable than warpstone for them.

The nuclear weapons stuff from the end times is peak stupidity imo, but Warpstone as far as I know is solidified warp energy, which in Warhammer fantasy means pure solidified magic, as the 8 winds of magic are individual strands of warp energy.

Vampire Counts: Transylvania Norsca: Vikings, but daemon corrupted Woof Elves: Violent tree huggers, and the trees hug back. Warriors of Chaos: Bad guy faction Brettonia: King Arthur, but French. High Elves: Tolkien Elves mixed with Atantis. Dark Elves: Evil version of High Elves Lizardmen: Aztecs mixed with dinosaurs. Skaven: They don't exist. Rats of unusual size do not exist. Tomb Kings: Egyptian, but fantasy. Vampire Coast: Pirates of the Caribbean, but also Vampires. Kislev: Fantasy Russians who also ride bears. Cathay: Dynasty Warriors China, but fantasy...well, more fantasy. Khorne: Daemons of war Tzeench: Daemon of magic Nurgle: Daemon of COVID Slaanesh: Daemons of drugs, sex, and rock and roll Daemons of Chaos: Daemons of indecisiveness, so a a bit from each of the four other daemon gods. Orge Kingdom: Reddit mods. Chaos Dwarfs: Dwarves, but Babylonian, and evil.

You are fine with referencing lord of the rings! Tolkien is the Father of Fantasy for a reason haha he originated most of the modern fantasy elements and tropes. As well as games workshop definitely taking inspiration from lord of the rings to build their fantasy world

Post-comment edit: Dang, sorry for the wall of text! I am.. passionate about this trilogy of games, to say the least. Anyway: So I am 3 months late to this video, but I want to chime in regardless. About your "So I'm guessing these are additional factions you can play if you buy the DLC?" Yes! With them comes new "Legendary Lords" characters from the lore you can play as, each with their own focus on a specific part of that race's roster, new starting locations on the campaign map, plus new units But the best part is that some of the best additions are free reworks of older content as well. The biggest example was Silence and the Fury, which made the Beastmen go from being THE absolutely worst & most boring faction in Warhammer II to being the most mechanically deep & fleshed out after they had languished in their extremely barebones' self from Warhammer I for almost exactly 5 years. Instead of having no mechanics at all save for one that occured every few turns, the Beastmen were given 4 new mechanics to play with, plus another one for their newest Lord, Taurox. These mechanics were called The Blood Grounds, Rewards of Dread, Rituals of Ruin and Challenges of the Dark Gods. Taurox's exclusive mechanic is known as "Rampage". Three guesses what kind of actions fuel & empower all of these things. In any case, all of them flow seamlessly into the other and that gigantic overhaul turned the Beastmen into the primal force of destruction they are meant to be instead of being a limp, lame roadblock that-while unintentionally lore accurate- was simply not fun to play as. And this may sound silly, but MY favorite change with that rework was having one of their Legendary Lords, known as Malagor the Dark Omen be able to fly, because he was born with giant crow wings, but.. he couldn't fly with them for those 5 years. As for your "They're really promoting the Daemon factions in the 3rd one." Yeap. Chaos is one of the big focuses of the third game. There's 4 Dark Gods to represent where they were more or less wholly absent for the first two games save for roaming & disorganized warbands of "Undivided" Chaos Warriors. There wasn't even a single Daemon in the game except for one 'boss' character that you couldn't play at all, so Chaos in Warhammer III is quite literally exploding with new content, and even more is coming.

I left the Star wars fandom for warhammer cause star wars fandom has got way too much fans who got their heads up their own ass, and they make it their business to let everyone around them, and the internet know that. Not saying Warhammer hasn't got those kinds of people too, but they're on a much more manageable level. Enjoy your time with warhammer, but also consider looking into it's sci fi counterpart, Warhammer 40k + Horus Heresy.

Without the vortex the world would once more be overrun by the hordes of the chaos gods
