Jaguar XK8 X100 gearbox service Part 2

I Service the gearbox on my 1996 XK8 convertible. In Part 2 I remove the old oil filter, and we get an insight to the condition of the gearbox .

John, your gentle and calm approach to your servicing tasks makes working on my XK8 so much easier to do. So many people get frightened about working on their cars but seeing how you work definitely instills confidence. This is definitely on my to do list now. Glad to hear you're on the mend. I'm a year on from a stroke so I completely understand the energy comment.

Good job John. I did my 97 XK8 at around 80k miles and it looked pretty much the same as yours and I know for a fact that was the first time it had ever been done so you can assume that yours is also a first time drain. I did the differential at the same time and that oil was terrible. Depending upon how the car is driven, my estimate is that the gearbox can go to 100k without too much concern but I would suggest a diff oil change needs to be done around half that. Richard

Great guide john! Trying this on the XF now and access is even worse for the fill plug, cut an hex/allen key to size and also broke a spanner trying to get the fill plug to open , I just replaced the oil in the Xk8 through the oil cooler pipe at the rad (put in what you take out) as i know the filter was done at a gearbox refurb i had done about 40k ago.

Hi John: I am sorry to say that I could not wait to do mine. did it about 3 weeks ago. Quick jacks make such a difference :) Emma's 97 gearbox now has 125000 km on it but looked much like yours. Same black sludge on the magnets but no chips/slivers or anything to make me worry. bolts all came out fine but one would not torque going back in due to slipping in the t27 torx head. NOT a thread problem thank goodness. My favorite Jag mechanic came up with a replacement but they are t30 now and the head is a bit more substantial. I am looking forward to your re fill. I did not enjoy doing that. Glad you are feeling better. Cheers... Glen.

John I always leave a couple of bolts in at the opposite end to the drain plug that way the pan can tilt and drain just a bit more fluid out, once the drain has gone to a 'drip' mode I always replace the drain plug I also do this on the initial drain so that I don't get dripped on, this reduces the amount of mess when removing the pan also stop it dripping on your arms.

I did mine with similar results; just be sure the fill-up plug will come out nicely before draining the pan! Also, a heads up on types of fluid suitable for refill could prepare us for step 3; I drained and refilled mine twice to better replace more oil from the torque converter, with the filter done after the second draining. Glad you’re feeling better!

My 01 XJ8 was low on fluid and developed a hard shift between reverse and drive. I started the process of draining the fluid. I have done so twice without removing the pan. But the odd shifting is continuing between reverse and park and sometimes in second. I actually added Lucas Stop slip. I am wondering if its gonna recover. Or if the trans was damaged and now us just damaged. I can try to drop the pan and do a proper change. But I think I am going to have to continue to use Lucas Stop Slip to keep it driveable. I'd prefer not to because while it does fix hard shifting its not really fixed and its difficult to put in because its very thick and has to be pumped in through the fill hole.

Hi Andy And welcome to the gang. A few of our subscribers have either XJS's or X150's . A lot of the lessons to learn are the same and they all have that unique Jag GT car appeal.
