You’re so right-on about that. They were/are all highly sought after studio musicians. Boz Skaggs is considered by many to be the one who first introduced the three guys who would become the core of Toto to the world on his AMAZINGLY popular album Silk Degrees. David Paich, Jeff Porcaro and Steve Lukather are all over that album. David Paich co-wrote many of the songs with Boz for the album. They’re also known for the ton of work they did on Michael Jackson’s Thriller album. (Still the highest selling album of all time with an estimated 80-140 million albums/downloads.). Again, writing the song Human Nature, which I believe Toto’s Steve Porcaro conceived and wrote because producer Quincy Jones was seeking another unique song for the album. Eddie Van Halen did lead guitar solo on one of the songs, but it was Steve Lukather’s guitar work you here on quite a few songs on the album.

I'll always have a reverence for this song. It was one of the first songs I learned to play on drums. Trying to learn triplets and swing beats. It's not the most difficult song to play on drums to be sure, but every base drum note, every fill, every open hi-hat, etc was done so tastefully. The entire song was produced magnificently, and the vocals and lead guitar are just iconic.

This is surprisingly difficult on drums
@somersetcace12 жыл бұрын
@@pauledwards9210 To play it properly it absolutely is. There are a lot of little dynamics in it, especially on the bass drum. However, kind of hard to compare it to guys like Billy Corbin, or Terry Bozio, etc, so to avoid that argument...It's not the most difficult, but yes, I agree it is not as easy to play as it may seem.
@johnhunter22942 жыл бұрын
It's a great song, and deceptively difficult to play on drums, especially towards the end with all the extra kicks. It's still a fun song to play just keeping time with the bass, but it's a classic case of "make the hard ones sound easy".
@somersetcace12 жыл бұрын
@@johnhunter2294 Yep, as I was saying to Paul ^^ - To play it properly it absolutely is. There are a lot of little dynamics in it, especially on the bass drum. I didn't mean to imply it was easy, just not the most difficult. At my level of playing at the time, it was damned near impossible. lol So, yeah, I agree. Beyond difficulty though, I really appreciate how he approached it Just very `tasty` for lack of a better adjective.

It was either '77 or '78 and I was a freshman in college. WRKK (B'ham) had morphed from a true underground FM rock station (It was formerly WJLN coming on at midnight to dawn and often played whole LP sides) to a more hit, though not particularly singles, FM rock station along the line immortalized by Steely Dan's "FM". Hearing this song over the radio was like a kick to the cranial cavity via the ears. I loved it and it rightly became an immediate FM rock staple introducing this group of former studio wunderkinds with a raw power visceral lead vocalist named Bobby Kimball. The keys and the slashing guitar chords against the heavy syncopated drums just gelled with those vocals demanding full attention. And the guitar solo by Steve Lukather was incendiary. What an opening salvo for a band that proved itself not to rely on these great power chords laid down here as Toto was so much more. Different, but right up there with Yes for the pure perfection of each member.

This guy looks like he just stood up to sing his karaoke song in my local pub after sinking 15 pints and absolutely fucking smashed the hell out of it! Truely amazing 👏

@A1 Steak Mann AHH that's cool but the music and voices was half of the experience! I loved the radio stations in vice city especially. You should reply it again

One of Toto's Greatest Songs. Transport me back to the late 70s early 80s.

My Gentle Pitt Bull days I wish I could have lived Now most of the music that comes out today is considered utter crap But this band and the few that are left still as Quincy Jones put it ( yes I quoting him and David Paitch) are still blasting through the darkness that music is these days

I'd be honored if some fans of 80s power ballads would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of Phil Collins' AGAINST ALL ODDS and Journey's WHO'S CRYING NOW on my channel in tribute to the masters. Real live acoustic with no autotune or karaoke tracks. Thanks & please excuse the promo.
