So much of the coverage of Amorim and Postecoglu seems to revolve around the idea of them compromising their ideas to deal with short term problems, in terms of injuries, poorly balanced squads, lack of investment etc. The idea seems to be that they can do something 'pragmatic' in the meantime to get better results in the short term and then resume their project once conditions are optimal, but I think that's flawed. For a start, conditions are NEVER optimal and you are almost always going to come up against some issue, whether it's injuries, suspensions, fixture congestion, your boards refusal to finance the reinforcement in a necessary area, etc. That leaves the project forever in a stop-start, not quite, things will get better when... state which is just poisonous to everyone. It's ultimately what took Ten Hag down, cause he had A Plan when he came to Man Utd and he compromised it after a few thumpings to get through his first season. He revised The Plan for season 2 and it fell apart just as quickly, largely due to injuries, so he compromised again and come season three there was just compromise and indecision. Amorim and Postecoglu would rather take their medicine now, bear through the bad results and work towards the idea that once things are closer to optimal, the players who've been working the system will be able to apply it and things should get better, rather than always be waiting to start. This works so that both ceiling and floor are raised - compromising just stabilises the floor in the short term, but the ceiling never goes up and over time, the floor collapses as well because nobody believes in everything.

Spot on, in my opinion. If the coach is "pragmatitic" (i.e. chooses the approach that gets the best out of the current players), this may lead to better short term outcomes. However, the coach does not develop the players into the direction of the desired approach, which reduces long term outcomes. If the coach is not pragmatic, short term results will suffer but the desired style will be reached sooner so that the long term benefits of the chosen approach set in as early as possible. Essentially, there is a trade off. The club must decide whether immediate results can be forgone in favor of long term results. The club must also consider: will the style of play the coach apsires to in the long term actually good enough to yield improved results that justify bad results in the short term? In the case of United, it may be worth it to employ a coach to rigorously work towards the long term style of play because the long term goal of winning the league outweighs the downsides of being less competitive in the short term. However, I doubt hat Amorim's game model will allow United to challange for the league title when it is perfectly implemented. If his game model is not "elite", they may be better of with a short term manager because long term results will not be good enough to rectify the trade off. Beyond that, succession planning is difficult when few other elite coaches share a similar game model/formation with your current manager. Optimally, United should have thought about the appointment they can make with the squad they build for Amorim when Amorim is gone. If Inzaghi is your only option in 2-3 years, you should probably build towards a different long term game model with a different coach.

The guys on the podcast also seemed to forget that when Amorim had the team he needed at Sporting they were consistently punching above their weight in Europe (at least against some of the bigger teams), so this whole argument about it not being worth actually building a squad to match the manager's vision doesn't hold up either.

@@amphiphil844 I'd low key disagree with the notion that 3 at the back is so uncommon at the top level as to make succession difficult when and if Amorim doesn't work out. Conte, Gasperini, Xavi Alonso, Thiago Motta, Simone Inzaghi use three at the back, Tuchel, Postecoglu and others use it as well and IMHO the current meta tends to default to three at the back in posession anyways as fullbacks push up or invert or a midfielder drops in to make the 3-2-5 box midfield attacking shape most top sides want in posession. What's difficult about Amorim's system is less the 3 at the back and more that it's quite aggressive rather than the usual perception of it, with the centre backs expected to start attacks with runs/passes and that means the understanding between the CBS and midfielders needs to be spot on, or those attacks will get turned over and then your CB is out of place, which combined with attack minded WBs leads to SO much space to be taken advantage of. The time it'll take for that to really bed in, combined with a fair few unsuitable players (who weren't up to standard in a 4231 either, lets remember) is why United have gotten worse of late. It will improve, eventually. Should it fail to work and Amorim is jettisoned in favour of a manager who prefers a 4231/433 or whatever, then a the only real change needed will be to sell a few excess CBs and the usual swapping out of parts. IMHO,, moving TO a 3 at the back is more stressful than moving away from it from a squad management PoV. As to whether it's good enough to win the title or at least consistently challenge the next 3-5 years, well... who knows? Sporting did incredibly well - but thats in Portugal where you're only REALLY challenged by 2, maybe 3 or 4 teams if Braga/Vitoria are having a good year. Amorim's European performance hasn't been amazing - falling out of the UCL/EL in the grounds/R16 or R16/quarters, so maybe the level is more 'top 8' in the premier league at it's peak. We shall see.

@@thechriscrowing Hats off to both your comments, you were spot on everything. There's the notion that Amorim is a one idea only coach, I disagree and believe that's wrong. The differences between his first real team and the last one he left at Sporting were abysmal, the first played a very physical/aggressive and transition football style (for example a lot more suited for the Premier League) whilst the natural culmination of his ideas lead to a final team built to dominate games and all phases of it but being malleable to play in many different ways within the same system. (We often see Amorim saying that the problem is not the formation but the players' limitation to play elite football and understand the game) You mentioned that the European performance hasn't been amazing, and you are right in part, there were games where Sporting dominated the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal, Atalanta, Dortmund, Frankfurt or Juventus, and games where they naively lost against midtable teams of lower leagues. At Sporting Amorim often devalued the European competitions and took a rotational approach to the competition, I can't stop to believe that that sentiment wasn't passed to the players. Something he stopped doing last year and this season, where Sporting was one of the best 4 teams in the champions league before his departure, with many believing that this season would be Sporting breakout year in European football (hence Amorim wanting to finish the season at Sporting). Do I think his ideas are good enough to win the Premier League or challenge it consistently? I believe modern football is about managers, their ideas and its implementation (pragmatic managers won't succeed in today's football) he is a manager of good and strong ideas and if he's given the tools to succeed I do believe it can work. From what I know of him, I doubt he would have accepted Man United if he wasn't guaranteed the tools to work with.

Amorim said a few weeks ago when asked about the prospect of a relegation that it was 'a possibility' - technically it is, he later said the whole of United 'needs a shock'. He's clearly trying to provide that shock, and also I think he's realised the high expectations and high pressure of the badge is causing a lot of the anxiety we see on the pitch (particularly at home). That's why they were good at Liverpool and Arsenal - no expectations, the underdogs. I think with these comments, he's trying to get a reaction, challenge the players' pride, and also take some of the pressure off in a weird way. Us against the world, they all think we're the shittest team ever, let's be blunt about it and lower the expectations further, what else is there to lose?

Few points on Manchester United needing to invest heavily for a back 3 system 1. A lot of prem teams have used or use variations of a 3-2-5 build up shape (Chelsea, villa, Arsenal, City). In the case of Arsenal and City they often pack their back line with CBs, playing them as fallbacks in the starting formation. What’s the difference between this tactic and a back 3? Aren’t a lot of teams essentially building up with a back 3? (Genuine question as I don’t have the tactical knowledge to understand this) 2. Regardless of the formation Manchester United need to sign a lot of players. They have not had a fully fit natural leftback for over a year. Casemiro and Eriksen don’t have the legs for the premier league. Mason Mount is eternally injured. They have 1 natural number 9 who is not ready. I could go on. 3. Why are we still talking about them as a team who should be challenging for the league when they haven’t won a league in over 10 years. They should focus on building a good squad and getting top 4 before thinking about the league.

'Fans have been angry at the manager for ages and we just need someone else to be angry about' is one of the worst takes on the situation I have heard. Spurs fans are pissed off because they were told the stadium would be this golden goose egg that would change their fortunes and start them on the path to competing at the top. Since it's been built they have had to pay the highest ticket prices in the country, seeing home atmospheres suffer as regular fans have been priced out. There was the Super League debacle in there too. This season was not pitched as one of transition but it clearly was, some of that is on Postecoglou's messaging, but most of that is on the club. Bergvall, Gray and Moore are clearly very good and likely to be important players but they're not ready to win trophies now. Despite that, fans were led through club messaging that this was the aim, maintain our position and build with the young exciting players coming through eventually to compete with the elite. Spurs had the most money to spend in terms of keeping within PSR this summer, they focused on investment signings instead. Daniel Levy has been consistently conservative when being aggressive could have taken the club to the next level (signing no players in 2018 after the club finished 2nd, signing youth in 2024) and delayed a rebuild for 3-4 years by trying to shut the door on success with Mourinho and Conte when the horse had bolted on it (the squad needed a refresh). So yeah, it's deeper than that.

The League is punishing those whose tactics aren't good enough. Unless Ange sees that his tactical setup is responsible for the injury list he has and the insistence to play one way despite the "changes", why should I keep faith with a project manager like him?

The take on United and Amorim is very strange to be honest. Their buildup formation is 3-2-5 which is what ten hag used along with the 3-1-6. Furthermore, if he was to line them up as a 4-3-3 that in itself will not make these players play like prime Barca of 2009-10. Very absurd take.

The new Manchester United management team aren't naïve enough to create a squad specifically for a back 3 system, it will surely be more adaptable than that. Before he arrived, Amorim said the line-up will read like a back 4. If you look at Conte's successful back 3 system, he had Victor Moses as one of the wingbacks, with Azpilcueta as a wide CB behind him, and Hazard as one of the 10s. You could rotate that team anti-clockwise slightly and it'd be a 4231. This kind of balance is surely what they'll be working towards.

Tottenham's recent crisis has really made listening to my favourite football content so tiring, and I'm really disappointed to hear the Tifo Podcast fall into some of the tired tropes that everyone else has, especially around injuries. Just the other day another podcaster was saying our players are being flogged in training and that Ange's style leads to more injuries, but if you listen to real journalists like Ali Gold you'd know training has been radically scaled back to combat injuries. To hear this pod regurgitating the tired line that Ange's teams are constantly injury ravaged is just bad journalism. This all stems back to one single article from one of his clubs about first season injuries, and now it's become a stick to club Ange to death with, despite the total lack of research and journalism done behind the scenes! You guys are football writers - do the research, tell us how much more Tottenham players run, tell us how many more injuries Postecoglou teams get, don't just spout what you've heard as accepted gospel.

I keep seeing people excusing Ange for the injuries but is the fact that he’s had this injury crisis and stuck with tactics which are so obviously damaging to the players on the pitch not a bad mark against ange. I constantly see people excusing him for injuries and yes I understand it isn’t good but all teams have injuries and other managers, like Russell Martin and Vincent Kompany, who I know well about being a Burnley fan, tried playing tactics their players couldn’t do at this level and were rightly panned for it and kompany got incredibly lucky Bayern could get one of the other 15 managers they wanted. And btw I like ange and his football I just don’t agree with this new idea of managers being so wedded to their ideology at the cost of everything else. A prime example of this is the Chelsea game with 2 reds it was incredibly entertaining to watch as a neutral but only so because Chelsea couldn’t hit a barn door. Any other team that would’ve been a premier league record win I have no doubts. And Tottenham would’ve still been on the halfway line in the 90tg minute

Am I the only who thinks that Spurs haven't really spent well. Bentacur, nice player but can't stay fit. Richarlison is inconsistent. Less said about Werner the better. Dragusin seems to be struggling. And in the summer they spent over £25m on this young winger Odobert when there's a strong argument that the money should have been used on more defensive options. Yes maybe Ange needs more money but the talent scouting side of things really needs improvement. The backups aren't good enough and that will hurt a team with injuries.

Just my 2cents on the United front:- Just cursory glance at their squad and the following set of players will most likely be sold (or leave due to contract non-renewal) in the summer:- Evans / Lindelof / Malacia / Shaw / Casemiro / Eriksen / Antony / Rashford* / Garnacho * / Mount * - and these are players that are currently occupying the bench or playing ping pong in the treatment room! (I can probably add Bruno / Hojlund / Zirkzee also to that list but...) That's close to 10 players - that should free up a ton of wages + get in some money = to help with the PSR and financial fair play rules. It's going to be a massive summer ahead for United and they need to get their recruitment right - get the players in that suit the system and Amorin will deliver the goods. The reason I am optimistic about the rebuild in the summer is United actually have "football people" in charge of making footballing decisions at the club, and hope the Berrada + Wilcox + Vivell connection can help identify and get the right player profiles in!!

Sure ten Hag made mistakes and deserved to go, but it wasn’t just on him that the team failed and they played 4-2-3-1 most of the time. If you change formation to a back 4 they still need a left back, centre back, midfielders, a striker, probably a wide player or two. What’s the difference to what Amorim needs?

@ Yeah and I think that is because they never really planned for him to be the coach for when things were on the rails again. When Chelsea’s CL-squad was slowly dwindling, they did the regular ‘big club’ transfer policy - buying the biggest names they could get hoping to stop the gaps in their team from being exposed. However, quite quickly they realized the boat was already going under so they went into real crisis mode. First they bought the players and staff from other successful teams (Brighton) and when that failed they got a solid manager (Poch) and instead brought their (Brighton) entire transfer strategy over (only on a bigger and more expensive scale). Poch was always planned as a transitionary coach imo and when they saw the transitions from crisis to being a top team went quicker than expected they brought in a more tactically adept manager.

Regarding Utd, it feels like you're too focused on the tactical shape and idea instead of the obvious issue of many of the players not being good enough. And this is nothing new, because from as far back as Mourinho and Ragnick we have known the players were not good enough for the standard required for a club of Utd's stature, but also the premier league. You're also talking about the recruitment like they're buying positions that don't exist in other formations. They still have no natural LB/WB, and they're not particularly deep at any other position. These are issues that haven't been addressed pre-Amorim. I don't think they need more CBs though assuming two or three of Maguire, Lindelhof and Evans go then you're still left with Martinez, De Ligt and Yoro. That's not enough even if you switch to a back 4. I'm more interested to see how this team looks at the start of next season when they would have had time to hopefully resolve a lot of their glaring recruitment issues.

United were set back years by ownership and Ten Haag. It's pretty clear ownership let Ten Haag make his own transfers and that was a massive mistake. They paid 95m Euros for Antony and they'll be lucky to see even a 1/5th of that money back to sell him on. They also spent big money on De Ligt and Mazraoui and while they're good players they spent big money on these guys Ten Haag specifically wanted only for Ten Haag to get sacked 2 and a half month into the season. They also spent money on aging players like Casemiro and Eriksen while the rest of the premier league teams started to bring in talent that was either at pre-peak age or peak age performance and age wise. It left United in a spot where most of the squad was either past their peak and starting to decline or pre peak and need time to develop, leaving no middle ground to balance the squad out. And when they have spent money on younger players they overpay market value for players with little experience and expect them to make an impact immediately (Hojlund and Yoro are examples) United have also upset the apple cart that are their academy players. Garnacho and Mainoo were thrust into the team at such a young age into a situation that isn't great for growing potential players. Now that United overspent of players who have either been complete flops, overpriced or have been injury prone it's caused ownership to come out and put up younger players like Hojlund, Garnacho and Mainoo up for sale to make money. Not even a year ago these players were at the forefront of United's future planning, and now they're being put in the shop window. They've also been terrible at planning around transfers. Mount was bought even though Bruno plays in his favored position, meaning the little time he has played has been out of position. Zirkzee was brought in to score goals even though his playstyle isn't and has never been as a goalscorer and is more of a hold up/creative striker. Hojlund was also brought in to score goals and expected to lead the attack even though he only had half a season of top flight football experience in his life. Antony was brought in even though he can only use one foot and his play style doesn't really work in the Premier League. The ownership also wasted half a year with keeping Ten Haag after the FA Cup win. It was said regardless of the result that Ten Haag was going and they went back on that immediately after the win. Instead of cutting ties there and brining in Amorim and letting him have a pre season with the team they wasted that on letting Ten Haag stay. They wasted it even more by sacking him early into the season. Makes the decision to keep him seem even more pointless and harmful now. And now you have Amorim who came in middle of the season and is expected to turn things around with a squad he wasn't given time to get to know in a league he isn't acclimated to yet.

This discussion shows the folly of relying on a stats approach without having watched Spurs play. There are two facts that the discussion ignores. The young chap with glasses said Spurs are much better defensively when Romero and VDV play. What he ignores is that the results were average and Spurs were very inconsistent. Another fact is that if you look at Ange' Premier League record (minus the opening ten games of last season) It's P50 W19 D7 L24. That's barely above relegation form. Ange is a poor coach. I have come to that view over a number of games ( I am a season ticket holder). As was shown in the second half of last season even with a full squad Ange' results are below average.

@@POWDRYeah. Most of Spurs’ summer signings were the wrong age profile. Too many young talents when the club needed more experienced backups ready for the first team. Naturally, I can’t blame them for not anticipating such a severe injury crisis, but last season they had injury problems too and it was clear then that when there were injuries to first team players, the replacements were too much of a drop off for the squad to maintain performances.
@jacklane3679
@jacklane3679 10 күн бұрын
@@T.E.S.S. Totally reasonable argument. The amount being spent is genuinely very high - you would expect that from one of the highest revenue football clubs in the world - and most of the business in isolation look like great long term investments. The issue is, when you actually boil down how the director of football has built this Spurs squad for a season in Europe, it's borderline negligent and explains why the injury issues are there. They came into this season with less wingers than last season, moving three wingers and bringing in just two teenagers from lower leagues, with one only arriving in January. They had to move Kulusevski into midfield after selling three midfielders and buying only two teenage midfielders from lower leagues. They sold more defenders than they bought in the summer, after depth at the back was already an issue the season before. They failed to buy the left sided defender they needed after long term injuries to both VDV and Udogie clearly hurt our form last season. They have only brought one clear upgrade to the first eleven in the last three transfer windows. it's been a slow motion crash to be honest!

I don’t think the concern about Ange accidentally winning a trophy and then Spurs being stuck with him is valid… If anything that vindicates people like myself that are in support of Ange. If he wins a cup, it shows what he can do with a stronger squad - which I assume he’ll have if he “accidentally” won a trophy.

ffs Amad isn't playing at a 10. it's baffling how many pundits think just because Amorim came in with some daft over inflated PR about being a revolutionary coach, that MUST mean United are actually playing a 343. Amad is wide right, exactly like how Saka plays at Arsenal. You wouldn't say Saka is a 10 would you, so why is it this constant nonsense that Ruben Interim plays with two tens. Amad is right wing and Fernandes is slightly less wide on the left, but still basically a really rubbish left winger. a 10 operates in the centre. It is arguable that Ruben Interim actually plays with no tens rather than this myth that it's two tens

I was astonished at this Man U take. What is the point of hiring a highly-regarded young manager if you're not going to back him? You're never going to get anywhere with the rebuild of Man U if the club followed the train of thought of this podcast. I think some players need to go, but others will be able to adapt to the system, but I think the coach needs to work with the players in pre-season to do it.

I don’t think Ange has necessarily covered himself in glory as this season has worn on, but it’s pretty hard to not consider how disastrous the injury crisis has been at Spurs. When the team was mostly fit, Spurs had some of the best underlying numbers in the league in both attack and defence. And even now, the only game they’ve lost by more than one goal was to Liverpool. Everything else has been losing by the finest of margins, compounded by the odd player brainfart, poor refereeing decision (like the corner Arsenal scored off in the last NDL) or fluke deflection. The team definitely aren’t playing well enough however and it’s where the player morale is at that will be the ultimate deciding factor. Progression in one or two of the cups and a couple of good wins, with players coming back from injury in the next few weeks, could be enough to bounce the club back. My concern is that he’s running out of runway now though. If Romero and VDV come back and there’s not an improvement in defense, it might mean the end for Ange.

People talking about the issues at Tottenham but clearly haven't been watching them or following them for decades. Tottenham are rubbish because our players are not good enough to play the system the manager wants. If you think the manager shouldn't ask the players to try and play football (play out of the back etc, which is where our problems come from) then you shouldn't hire an attacking manager. But regardless I am resigned to the possibility that Tottenham will never be a particularly good side under ENIC because they have shown over two decades that they will not buy top quality players. The last time Spurs purchased a ready made top player was Rafa Van Der Varrt back in the days of Harry Redknapp! Any other player we have had that has gone on to be top quality was purchased before they realised their potential (who knew Modric / Bale etc were going to be as good as they were before Spurs purchased them?).
