Who will come out on top as Peter Sagan, Caleb Ewan, Mark Cavendish and Tim Merlier look to win their first stage of the Tour de France 2021?
Stage 3 will see the spotlight switch from the puncheurs to the sprinters as they fight it out on a flat(ish) route from Lorient to Pontivy. The run into the line is far from simple, after an undulating section through Guern the riders will fly down a short descent to the outskirts of Pontivy where they’ll then be met with a series of 90° bends. Only in the final 1.5km does the road straighten out, giving the sprinters and their leadout men a brief window in which to organise their trains. He who marshals his troops best, before unleashing his sprint from pole position at 200m to go, should come out on top.

Can anybody please help me to understand this? Today was stage 3 of the Tour de France 2021. The stage was designed to be a sprinters stage and because it was only stage 3 there still was a huge peloton with all the sprinters in it. Additionally, there was neither a prologue nor a ttt prior to this stage which would possibly have settled general classification till the mountain stages. Therefore, even the GC contenders would try to sprint for bonus seconds. All this information made it clear, that there would be a furious pace in the last 10 km and literally everybody in this big peloton would try to be as far at the front of the race as possible… And then you look at the last 10 km of the stage…WTF! On 80% of this last 10 km the road was even too narrow for 2 cars passing each other at normal speed and for sure too narrow for a whole peloton sprinting. There were no “run-off areas” like parking lots or something similar, roadsides containing grass or gravel and the penultimate km was fenced with the old dangerous barricades with their stands protrude into the street (still!!! in 2021!!!). To say severe crashes were expectable is quite an understatement. I’m just curious: Are there any reasonable rules of how the layout of the finale of a sprint stage should look like? And if yes, does the UCI care if these rules are adhered? Does the UCI really think it does a suffivcient job on riders safety when prohibiting “super tuck” and “puppy paws” because these positions are dangerous? Give me a break….

I think a lot of these crashes are the “MVDP affect.” He makes the GC contenders nervous because he can put the power down at anytime…even during a sprint stage. If you watch Primo’s crash it was just after Van Der Poel made an acceleration. It turned out to be nothing more than MVDP making some space but it got Primo’s attention and caused him to surge into a wheel. Likewise, he is making the lead out guys and the sprinters as nervous as hell because he can,(and did) shatter the traditional lead out structure by accelerating 1000 meters out. I mean the man performed the lead out for the winner of the stage while wearing the gold jersey! He’s playing by his own rules and it’s creating absolute mayhem. God, I admire that man.

Ewan picked a line into a disappearing gap (the fencing bulged inward), tried to switch from right to left, and hit Merlier's wheel ahead of him. He then took out Sagan, who kept his hands on the bars, landing on his upper back, saving his collarbone. I suspect Ewan would have been relegated even if he'd avoided Merlier's wheel for abruptly changing line in the sprint, given Sagan was there.

There's a rule in that if a rider crashes in the last KM (or Idk how many, but close to the finish line), they get the same time as the group they were in. If you look at Ewan's and Sagan's official times, they were given the same as the rest of their group. Though, there can't be such rule for the whole lenght of the stage. If a rider falls whilst in the peloton, what time will he be given? The peloton will eventually split up, which could then lead to inappropriate strategies from other teams (or the victim's team itself) to play with those time checks. Every sport has such rules that just cannot exist because they would kill the game.

First time it was spectator fault, and this time, if you check the video you could see that Colbrelli pushed him/bodychecked him. It is true that Roglič had a late start to his cycling career and maybe he lacks in some technical parts of cycling, but he is a really good descender. Me and my brother rode with him many times here in Slovenia and even at the start of his cycling career he was a very good bike handler and descender. Even on training rides he went on "kamikaze mode* and it was almost impossible to follow him on descents. Though he became more carefull later in his career and when he signed for Lotto NL.

At some point the riders have to take responsibility. It's not always the organiser's, UCI, or elses fault. It's a tour across a country and you have to be able to ride the local roads. How about we race only on closed newly paved airport runways? The Tour is just insane with every team trying to stay at the front with 8 riders, it cannot work out inspite of the route.

@@isitrachelorj3953 Wrong. The course is as dangerous as the organisers make it and it is madness to try to cram the number of riders currently in the Tour on such narrow and twisting roads on flat stages, when the peloton is together. I'm not sure I entirely agree about the course being to blame. The road was no narrower than those in half the classics that we all love. The body count suggests something isn't right, but G crashed before the "dangerous" downhill roads, Roglic crashed on the outside of the peloton, Ewan crashed in a section of near empty road by TdF sprint standards. It's right to look for improvements for rider safety, but sometimes it is just one of those things.
