I love how natural you kept the outside enclosures'. That makes for comfortable animals.

Also, I LOVE the parrot aviary! I love whistling at them, with them. I visit their enclosure several times per visit to interact with them. They’re so sweet and fun.

Was hoping to visit in August on my way from Stranraer (I think that's the ferry terminal - no passport so was intending to drive to the north, cross and drive south past yourselves) down to Norfolk for a steam engine weekend but having looked at the long range weather forecast I think I'll give Fota a try instead (I'm in Kildare so much closer to me as well) and will try and plan a visit to yourselves (and a steam engine festival) next year when hopefully the weather won't be either raining or so hot I'm not going outside in it. In the meantime your videos are very much enjoyed here in Kildare.

I feel so privileged to have been one of the lucky ones to do a lynx experience before you stopped doing them! I think it would be amazing to have lynx wild again, but I worry it would attract people to try find them too much! I struggle to choose my favourite part of the zoo because I love different bits for different reasons.

The lynx were so unpredictable and shy that it was an encounter that was difficult to guarantee at all - easiest to just leave them alone in their exhibit ❤️

I remember a very long time ago, when I was little, Edinburgh Zoo had a snow leopard in a dreadful small, boring enclosure. I wonder now how they were ever allowed to have it, kept in such conditions?! Chester Zoo now have Snowies, but your enclosure and private sleeping areas are FAR superior. You’ve given the snow ladies a beautiful home. I love seeing both of them, they’re wonderful! I dunno how I feel about the lynx….I’m envious of countries where people have footage a casual bear or an alligator, just mooching about! It’s so cool, but I think your average, small-minded Brit would have a major panic attack about the very *thought* of lynx being loose. I mean, some people still have reservations about beavers even!! 🤦🏻‍♀️🥴

The Eurasian lynx isn't huge, especially in comparison to the Scottish wildcat -a protected species - or even a Norwegian forest cat or Maine coon (both of which can grow to a LARGE size but aren't known for attacking humans or other pets). I've just been comparing sizes via google images and lynx are a lot smaller than I thought.

It is mad to see how much variation there is in exhibits across different zoos. We’ve got some exciting plans to make some modifications to our exhibit, it’s going to take a little bit of time but it will make a great difference.

Thankyou for the tour videos, I can’t wait to pay a visit from Sheffield soon! Would you be able to take in racoons from other zoo’s at all or does it really mean, once they sadly pass on, there will be no more? Interesting facts about the invasive species in the UK!
@NorthumberlandZoo
@NorthumberlandZoo 5 күн бұрын
Sadly Raccoons can’t be bred in the UK at all so that includes Zoos. There is also a ban from Europe too, so once they are gone they are gone ☹️ glad you enjoyed the tour!

If you don't mind me asking, how long do those wooden structures (eg. fences) last? They do not look to have any kind of treatment to make them water resistant, though please correct me if I am wrong, and considering the climate I was wondering how economical they would be as a choice since they look great, but. When it comes to favorite area, the African grey parrot aviary was a pleasant surprise with how spacious it is. I guess that is one of the benefits of newer ZOOs as opposed to old ZOOs in my country, there are fewer space restrictions and you can build "up to code" from the get go. Plus it looks awesome and the parrots get to watch people now! :)

They're probably "Pressure Treated" This is a process that forces preservatives into the wood. Any brushed-on treatment might be poisonous.
@NorthumberlandZoo
@NorthumberlandZoo 10 күн бұрын
It depends on which kind of wood you mean. We don’t treat the ‘waney’ boards from the local saw mill and that doesn’t last forever, however that wood is inexpensive compared to treated wood and when we replace it with new waney board, the old is recycled into our biomasses to use for heating - so nothing goes to waste! The parrots love their new aviary and we have seen positive health benefits as well as bird-to-bird relationships formed in this space which is great to see. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻
