ryo did so many right things with roy, i agree with most things he did during the set (though he should have really slowed down a little against rosa since a lot can go wrong against her if you approach too much *cough* luma jank *cough*) . Roy is way too underrated by most people, would be happy to see more rep of roy from ryo and other players in the future.

Jeeezsus nuts The highest I believe Roy can go when played at the highest possible capacity is mid-upper tier. His moves weave into each other when tipped and they can be blended with the base of his sword for combos. OoS Up-B and Neutral A are great and his mobility overall is one of the better ones in SSB4. His recovery is exploitable and he has to wait for an opening. I believe Roy is better than Doc and Falco. The others are difficult decisions because they net similar rewards from their strongest attack and their combo games.

Jeeezsus nuts I believe *G&W*, when played at the highest level is at high upper tier. Sure he's light, has a weak ledge game, & most of his moves are punishable on shield, but he compensates that by having great shield damage, some of the best juggling a character could want, a Up-Smash with intangibility frames that kills early, good SSB4 factor with rage boosting his good kill moves, good range on his many moves, long-lasting hitboxes, and recovery that's hard to stop, good off-stage presence, one of the best dash attacks in the game, and having a great crouch that can evade many moves. *Link* is low-High tier when played at his highest potential. He has good SSB4 factor because he's fairly heavy. He has big hitboxes and a ton of power on most of his moves. He has decent OoS with Nair and jab. His projectile game insures he won't ever have to approach most characters (meaning he can easily rack up a ton of percent when he gets stage control). He does notable shield damage and his f-tilt, d-tilt, jab 1 & 2, Nair, Bair, and zair moves are very hard to punish wen spaced properly, or at the least, risky to punish. he has good juggling with his aerials and he has good landing with his dair having no lag when spaced properly from the floor or platform. His big problems are getting comboed, lacking an up-close game, having an exploitable recovery, and being forced to approach some characters. I believe Shulk is mid-High tier when played at his best. He has an exploitable Up-B (good OoS though), has predictable moves, has Minado Arts that have downfalls, and lacks up-close frame data(which leaves him vulnerable to hardcore rush-down characters and forces him to space his moves perfectly). He mitigates that by having the longest disjointed range in SSB4. His Up-tilt is one of the best. He has an easy time 2-framing the ledge with D-tilt or spiking characters through it with Dair. And being able to wall out many characters with his Nair, Fair, & Bair alone can be really good against many charcaters. His Minado Art Canceling enables him to cencal the landing-lag on his aerials, which leads to possible mixups of being even harder to punish. His Minado Arts give him everything he needs to succeed at a cost. *Speed* enhances his neutral, enabling him to play super campy or super-aggressive at the cost of having a worse jump. *Jump* gives him some of the better off-stage presence, a 50/50 kill setup from his up-throw, and some of the best air stats at the cost of taking more damage from aerial attacks. *Shield* makes him one of the heaviest characters but reduces his mobility greatly. *Buster* lowers the knockback on his moves while dealing more & damage and increasing shield damage and pushback. This makes his combo game really solid (although you'll take more damage from anything). *Smash* makes him one of the lightest character while making most of his moves kill moves and he even gets 2 kill throws in D-throw (with smash active it's the strongest) and B-throw (one of the strongest with smash active).

That's not so much the character's fault as it is the player for not utilizing the character as well as they should. Characters do have their shortcomings and I'm not going to ignore that, but ANY character can destroy just about everything if the player is smart enough to adapt accordingly to how the character should be played. I have to agree (mostly) Soundwave Superior.

I think Ryo would've won if he countered Rosa by switching back to Ike. Roy has a hard time killing Luma and then can't really deliver much damage before he comes back. Ike, on the other hand, is a Luma killer, and has more range and power to wear down Rosa while she stalls; sure, killing Luma the easy way will often be punished, but that's a relatively small price to pay to give Rosa a hard time and force her to play virtually the whole match without Luma, which will put most Rosas in a situation they usually don't experience against most characters.

He has an incredibly complex and hard to maintain neutral, no safe approaches, next to no safe moves on shield, mediocre recovery, his only redeeming factors are grab combos/mix ups, and very good air and ground speed. (Things that nearly all of all characters in this game have)

I know Ryo didn't take the set, but he did win 2 matches. And tbh, less people should be surprised when a lower tier character wins. Yes, Roy isn't used as much as other characters, but remember you can be good with any character, if you know how and you practice enough. The reason I'm not surprised is because me and my brother play Smash so much and use so many different characters, that we know the ins and outs. And by doing that, we become proficient at the game in general. We don't only play 1 character, and not only watch one character. Like when people say "Oh wow a [insert lower tier character] won!" They shouldn't be THAT surprised, and think that lesser used characters can't win at all. Thats the great thing about competition, is that upsets happen. And Smash 4 is a more balanced game than the previous titles, in my eyes. So seeing combos and kills that other people will react like "you can do that?" is not new to me. I don't know everything, but I've taken the time to experiment, try out, and observe more than just my mains. I've mained Link and Marth since Melee, and each game I've used more and more characters and i've become more knowledgeable and proficient with them. Sometimes I feel like I can be a good commentator, because some commentators barely know anything lol. I encourage people to pay attention to other characters, so when someone is surprised, you can say you weren't, and tell them that they've been sleeping on that fighter.

I feel pretty sure these players put quite a lot of hours on each character in the roster to know the match up. Even players with only single mains. Watch anyone play iron mans. Every Pro knows the bread and butters of each character and their key mechanics. When you ask for the level of precision of these guys, you tend to only get to that level with one or two characters, so a pro might as well invest in someone with good frame data. Roy, though enjoyable to play, is not worth the investment for many of these pros.

I get where you're coming from but do keep in mind that skill is what gets you the win but once you reach a plateau and challenge another player with equal skill that's where the influence of character frame data and move sets start to influence the outcome. I know tier list isn't everything but having the ability to abuse certain characters for their frame data does provide a significant advantage over someone using a character that can't. I too main Link. I'm not good by any means, I try to practice, but against certain characters like Mario who can throw out moves and hardly be punished for it is just ridiculous whereas as Link player missing their move will take a string of attacks or a smash attacks to the face because of how bad Link lags.

JayE but there's a reason Low Tiers aren't winning tournaments. While Ryo is carrying Roy here, it stands to reason if he put the same number of hours on a higher tier character, he may have done better. That's what makes it hype that he went 3-2 on Abadango with Roy.

It's really hard to react DI so you have to preemptively DI but that too has problems. At some point Ryo did forward throw jab up b He could've hit with side tilt and the most optimal DI is inwards but that's perfect DI for jab and apparently Abadango wasn't aware of the up b angle so he died
