Towing 20k with my ram 2500 5.9 Cummins 48re Take 2!

Was unhappy with my 07 megacab. The 48re gearing was just not very helpful. No torque converter lockup until 30 mph. Empty truck, not bad. But towing was painful. Did a mystery switch (manual lockup for 2nd) helped. Had to be uber careful. Swapped in a G56 manual. Glorious difference when towing. Gear spread, engine load, exhaust brake... All were much improved.

I replace the transcooler with an larger after market on my o4-2500 5.9 and when I load my 2,000 lb truck camper the temp stays at 140 F in the summer.

Hell I towed 6k-7k with my 05 and I was so unhappy with how it towed that I got rid of it that summer, if I ever give a Cummins a chance again it’ll have to be a manual. It was pretty sad seeing it struggle towing a light f150 on a flatbed trailer. Especially when it had a new transmission and engine.

I dont know if you have tried this, or seen it. I have a 2004 305/555 truck, and if I put the truck in manual 2nd, it locks up around 28mph in 2nd gear. Then you're able to run that gear on out and bump it up into 3rd. It also provides better engine braking going down hills. I just got the truck so I haven't hauled with it yet, but I was happy to see that its capable of locking up in manual 2nd from the factory unlike my 2nd gen trucks. Id be interested to know if your truck does it as well

I think it does. I never use this truck to tow anything real heavy though typically, just wanted to try it. Have a Duramax with 6spd Allison and it takes off so much better with the lower first gear and it has exhaust brake and is a 3500 so better suspension for heavy loads. Use this truck for everything else cause it's shorter wheelbase and gets around town better.

My 05 ram/ cummins with 48re pulls my bobcat on a 35 foot goose neck pretty nice but trans temp shoots up over 190 pretty quick until the converter locks up and them she drops to about 160

Yep, pulls good once the converter locks but doesn't like to take off on hills and gets pretty hot pretty quick on a hot day if you have any slow speed hills or stop and go traffic.

Look into 5-9 diesel tuning.. it locks up sooner and has true trans tuning..

I was gonna get efi live years ago but I have other trucks better setup for heavy towing. The edge was on the truck when I bought it and I mainly use the truck for a grocery getter now and occasionally a bumper pull and it does ok for that.

I have a mag hytec pan on my 2005 dodge. My temp gauge 99% of the time is 160F the hottest I ever got it was 180F never had much over that.

I have the same truck as you, except 2006. Do you think its worth doing a g56 swap? I generally only tow around 12-13k pounds at most.

Not really. They do ok at 12-13k. I think that's about what they're rated for.

Your lucky mine has 3:73 believe the big tires deff hurt it a bit but the small tires look so gay . I just hauled over 20k pound load home with mine it was working to get going but it did it lol

Well, you don't have to guess... Look up my video taking the Duramax and tractor to the cat scale. Scale ticket shown in video. This truck and the Duramax is pretty much the same in weight. I also had an additional hay spear in this video that I didn't have in cat scale video. You can Also look up my video of me buying a set of dot portable scales and weighing different things... Bottom line I know what it weighs and it weighs what I said it does 🙂... Around 27k Gross combined. Thanks for watching... I don’t understand why someone would hook up 20k #s to a truck that has a max tow of 13,600 Lbs. The numbers on the door do mean something. You are putting everyone on the road at risk.

@@hey_youtubeim_back2159 Yes absolutely. But not if it jeopardizes people’s safety. Sometimes you have to make an extra trip. Yeah it sucks I know. Driving around on your property is one thing. But driving down the road like 50-100 miles or so is a totally different issue. Just stay safe. That’s all I’m getting at. You see trucks turned over wrecked and burned to the ground overloading their trucks because they have this voice in their head nothing bad will happen Next thing you know your dead and you killed a family of 4 in the vehicle you overloaded. Not something easy to live with. Hope it’s worth it.

Rollover don't normally happen because the rig was overloaded. Speed, worn out or faulty equipment, driver fatigue or just plain old driver error are what usually causes an accident.

@@hey_youtubeim_back2159 Disassemble what? Instead of hauling 24 Round bails at once haul 12, then make a second trip. I guess I’m not understanding what needs to be disassembled. Max tow on a single wheel 3500 is around that 16,000 # mark. The dually 3500 max tow is normally around 2,000# less. It has a higher payload but tows less.

My 07 5.9 dually with 80k miles and a 4speed tows like garbage I pulled 11.5 last week to redo my driveway and that 1st gear is horrible to get a load Rollin. Nothing is wrong with my truck infact I was so unhappy with how it tows I went out and picked up a "work" truck 09lmm 6speed Allison feels like a whole different truck the dodge can cruise to work and the grocery store the Duramax will be used for work

Exactly what I did. Got a lbz Duramax with Allison that pulls good even my dozer. Use the Cummins to run around town etc. The same Cummins with the 6spd manual is a totally different truck compared to the auto. The auto just isn't geared for heavy towing.

Idk why they ever put these 4speeds in these trucks a 5 speed with at least a 3.1/1 1st gear would have been much better
