Valve springs help with boost blowing the valves open on a diesel. Most people don't spin them that much faster than stock to worry about floating the valve train. Push rods make sense if you stiffen the springs but critical if you have an aggressive cam. Agreed that lift pump, head studs, and transmission are a must. The Fleece bypass is what I will install when I replace my clutch.

I agree with everything in here if you want to make 500 hp. There is a big difference between 400 and 500 though. If all you want is to bump a 305/555 or a 325/600 truck up to 400 hp, you really just need a tune and gauges. A lift pump will make your CP3 last longer but the stock pump will make 400 hp as long as it lasts.

One note to add, I’m not sure what you are seeing for consistent manifold pressures, but I was seeing consistent 27-32 psi under load. This isn’t much, but it was enough to cause my stock intercooler to leak. I’m not sure if mine was just a fluke- as I’ve seen them handle much more abuse and survive, but fwiw, I’d consider an upgraded intercooler and boots a worthwhile investment as well.

I like seeing a guy that is happy about not seeing smoke lol. I personally decided to go the 6.4 hemi route in a 3/4 ton but now I'm looking into doing a g56 swap on the truck. Mechanically the g56 should fit and the swap will be similar to a cummins however I will need to make new fuel lines. The factory lines go over the transmission right where the g56 shifter would go through the floor. Did you know that before the lines cross over the trans the are plastic? Cost cutting at it's finest I guess.

Early 04 305hp Cummins 6spd. My plan has always been about the same as you for the support mods, minus the valve work (I don't hardly push 2500rpm), but the power addatives are going to be hardware in the forms of mild turbo, injectors, and the minimalist of tunes. Have had the truck 19 years and still not very far into the list. Lol
@JustDiesels Жыл бұрын
Honestly you’d probably be plenty happy with tunes and head studs alone!
@PlaneSaddles Жыл бұрын
@JustDiesels Head studs definitely need to happen. Tune wise, I've had a Smarty Jr paired with a Quadzilla box all set fairly low for so long the first Avatar movie came out afterward. Have had a FASS on it since 07 (the fairly loud one). Turbo wise have had HE 351 (good power, lost mpg), HE 351VE, and back to the stock HE 341. S&B intake. The first real step in support mods for the current plan is the clutch hydraulics...just because the original failed. Pretty much the money spent on this truck lately is maintenance, repair, and upgrades for hauling a truck camper is all.
@pOOlarisking Жыл бұрын
I have same truck. 450,000km on it. Smarty Jr on performance tune and no issues at all. Going to a smarty touch, diesel Dr where I live says with my mileage studs are necessary until you go monster turbo. Already have stage 2 south bend clutch rater for 525 hp. The only time head studs are needed is if you have a low mileage truck. Otherwise the head is pretty much welded in place after 300,000km. Did a bd iron horn 361 turbo kit. No problems with it at all. Mat it all day for two years. No blow no valve float nothing.
@malnfc85652 ай бұрын
625’s are definitely overkill for that level of power. However a great base for when you get bored and go for more at some point. L19’s are a more economical option for stud that is stronger than the typical arp 2000/425 stud that most people opt for the first time around.

@@JustDiesels i have the exact same truck 06, 3500 qcsb. I have custom tuning via mm3, but up here in Utah my tunes smoke a bit more than others say down by sea level
@JustDiesels Жыл бұрын
If they’re custom tunes, just have them back the fueling off a bit!

What kind of mileage do you get? I've seen as high as 25.5 hand calculated on the highway. My truck smoked a bit even on stock tunes

For best reliability replace with gas motor.

Why would you test the power on the top end ? Don’t really get that . Be a man boost launch that thing in tune 5 and send it sideways …

Sadly manual and automatic even at the same power is such a different feel

It’s true. An auto always feels so much faster than a Manual.

Hello, Andrew - Good video and great advice. Many diesel enthusists believe slapping a tuner, intake and exahust is going to give them the power they want...not so. like you said, there are modifications that you really need to look into if reliabilty hasn't left your brain. As far as the lift pump; which do you prefer, external or in the tank such as the Fleece intank pump? Getting ready to pull the trigger on transmission, Lift pump, extended range fuel tank, By-pass coolant line (much needed), and a monitor. However, the lift pump outside the on the rail is just a bit concerning, being a target for rocks and morons who want to mess with it. Your thoughts....again, nice work. Cheers!

I really like my fass and it’s super tucked up, but I do see a good argument for an in tank! I just like having easy access to the filters.

@@JustDiesels Thanks. Having access to the filters is a pretty good benefit
