That is amazing m8! Very lucky! I picked up my 02 f250 4x4 crew cab short bed 7.3 powerstroke from an old farmer who bought a new truck and didn't want his anymore. It needed a radiator (clogged with dust/dirt from being a farm truck) and all fluids changed and she hasn't let me down either! Cheers!

I regularly towed a 6500 lb trailer behind my 92 non turbo between 5000 and 8000 feet. 2nd and 3rd are definitely the work gears up in the mountains, i cant imagine trying to pull 14000 lb up a pass with one of these two valve non turbo mills! They like sea level air and level roads

I ran across an 89 e350 7.3 yesterday and the guy gave me a great deal. I'll only be using it to other other vehicles. I keep hearing how weak they are and I really want mine to do what I need. It's in great shape. No rust and the interior is mint. Shows 63k miles and has oil change receipts that verify it. This made me more hopeful.

Awesome run bud. I have a 02f350 dually. I towed my first load few days ago. Triple axle 40ft camper. Dry weight was 18,500. I was leary at first but see your video and said why not. I wish my truck had a zf6 but it's auto 4r100. I was amazed at how good it towed. Pulled hills fine and my egts never got above 950. I used a quarter tank of fuel on a 3 hr haul up north . So I was very impressed and decided I'm keeping this truck for sure.

@@BRIANVANDUYN I'm not exactly sure. The factory temp gauge isn't very accurate. When it has kicked on, it's always been in the summer with a heavy load usually going up a long hill. The gauge will go to over 3/4 on the high side, then the fan engages and then you hear a ROARING noise that's unmistakable. . That sucker is LOUD. My 1984 Chevy 6.2L is the same way.

I like the video! Quick FYI, using overdrive will not cause heat build up in a manual transmission. Only in an automatic towing a steep grade or when lockup cannot be achieved. The only concern for shifting will be engine power band and exhaust temps.

Glad you said that. I heard him say that and was wondering
@jakewaters5563
@jakewaters5563 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct on that, however towing heavy on over drive still isn’t the best idea because those gears in the transmission are the smallest and there for the easiest to break. Also as the engine starts lugging and sending surges through the gear sets it’s easy to break the gear teeth. This is a fact of all manual transmission regardless of manufacture.
@Mark_Tschetter
@Mark_Tschetter 3 жыл бұрын
Why would exhaust temps be an issue on a NA engine? I thought only turbo charged engines had that problem because of drive pressure.
@PartoftheMadness
@PartoftheMadness 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Jake, you will notice that I very specifically mentioned the engine power band when speaking of shift points. Ideally, one should never shock load the drive train or be lugging their engine. I do not doubt that you have seen broken teeth and I am not a dedicated tranny mechanic but I have had numerous gear boxes apart both on my own and in trade school: OD certainly has the smallest main shaft gear but its counter shaft gear is the largest. First gear has the smallest counter shaft gear and the largest main shaft gear, so I do not understand what you mean when you say OD has the smallest gears. Perhaps you can share your thoughts and I can learn as well. MarkT, even a naturally aspirated engine can generate enough heat to melt a hole in your piston if you dump enough fuel into it. The owners manuals are very clear on that. If I could post pics here I could show you the metal fatigue on the piston crowns of my 6.9 IDI near where the flame front exits the precup. Combustion chamber temps are what matters, which are directly proportional to exhaust temps. It's just that we can easily measure the last but not the first. I do not recognize the term "drive pressure".
@bikingwithcamo5469
@bikingwithcamo5469 2 жыл бұрын
I’m going to end this discussion, don’t tow in OD, it puts torsional stress on the countershaft in the vertical direction, thus separating the countershaft from the main. Eventually it willl either wipe the bearings out or cause other issues
@joshuaphillips1867
@joshuaphillips1867 2 жыл бұрын
These trucks used zf5/zf6 trans which have tight tolerances, and needle bearings which require atf, not gear oil. That is the only reason for excessive heat buildup. Some f350+ cab chassis used the t18/19 4 speed until 90-91 no worries on overheating those transmissions....

Your dual mass flywheel is completely shot that's why it chatters so bad on take off. If you do not fix this immediately your bellhousing on your transmission will be cracked like a spider web if it isn't already and being a zf 5 speed that means a whole new transmission. I would replace clutch and flywheel with a 1 piece flywheel, the dual mass setup is a P.O.S. the springs go right away. I also hope you have a pyro cause I can tell your pumps turned up probably around 1.5 flats you don't want to touch 1200 F for very long. Many idi's have died because of the lack of a 100 dollar gauge. Treat the old girl with some TLC and she will always get you home.

I actually pull heavy with idi ford pickups and a international S series and I thought your truck did well for pulling a 25k trailer with a N/A idi ,but when you pulled up to the scales it shows your not pulling 25k your pulling around 17,500lbs. Don't include the weight of your pickup and say that's what your pulling to make your load sound heavy your gross overall weight truck and trailer is 25k.

we had a 8600lb forklift on a trailer, 1991 7.3l turbo .05 over pistons stage 1.5 injectors. going up some 10+% grades (long hills, bout this whole video worth of climbing) and that thing would not pull it, first gear 30km/h and the water overheated halfway up.

@@Donkusdelux There must of been something not dialed in right. There is no such thing as stage 1.5 injectors. There is moose injectors,dps, and r and d. All the injectors have is different tips so they empty faster. Turbo idi's pull very good when enough fuel is supplied and running around 12psi boost in a healthy motor. My 3 ton s1654 is a non turbo 7.3 and it pulls better than the turbo one you mentioned.
@Donkusdelux
@Donkusdelux 3 жыл бұрын
@@wildrosegarage4208 you should look into stage 1.5 some more, they make them, and thats what I bought when I shaved the heads, upgraded the valves and put the turbo on it My truck is 3.55 gears, i think that is why it doesnt pull well. it will do 180km/h no load 10psi. 4" exhaust, enough fuel to make her dump black when you work it. And i am going up long hills, you climb 4000feet in 20min, the 1999 f550 superduty we have climbs those moutians easy. but the idi just fights it until it overheats, pulling 12k lbs on the flats it runs cool, right at the bottom of "normal" on the dash. Im going to get another 7.3 f350 superduty that last pull we had oil dumping out the rear main seal.

@@Donkusdelux let me no who makes stage 1.5 injectors so i know for next time i need some. The best factory injectors is a BB code. Stage 1s have the tips cut off to alow them to dump quicker they dont realy give you much more fuel if any they are just less restrictive, fueling is all in the pump and a factory pump is around 80cc . As for stage 1.5 this is the first i have heard of it and how they could allow more fuel with out a db2 injection pump that can give more fuel is beyond me. I have been playing with idi's for a very long time.

Wouldn't feel comfortable hauling that much weight with my 12 valve its a 3/4 ton though too not a 1 ton. I'm in Pennsylvania we have to steep of grades to haul that much weight unless you have at the minimum 800-850 lb ft of torque. The mountains can be pretty tough over here most I'd feel good about is 15k not including the weight of the truck. So that'd be about 23k lbs altogether my 1st gen extended cab weighs about 7,890.

@@BRIANVANDUYN ok. That’s pretty decent. Was just curious if the N/A got better or worse mileage. I run a 12v Cummins but have a lot of respect for OBS fords. In all honesty I think the trucks are a little better put together especially interior but I liked the simplicity of the 12v over the PS and the dodge had straight axle Dana 60 in the front. For some reason I have a soft spot for n/a diesels and if it was in the cards I’d own one with the old up to 85 interior. That’s a really cool truck you got there.

Uh oh, I can see another weight rating war about to happen. I don’t know the exact specs for your truck, but I am certain that you are over. I am pr etty sure Ford set the max GCVWR gross combined weight rating at less than 18,000 lbs for that truck. I think the GVWR was around 8,800 for just the truck. Your door tag will show the GVWR. I am sure more will chime in on this one. Huge topic on the forums. Have to say though, she was pulling her own!

Sure it was slower than most 4 wheelers going down the road but she was working ! I just cant justify spending 50+k on a new diesel pickup that the door says i can tow..... when this pickup is doing it for 10k.....

Yeah, but those weight ratings kinda become useless as the vehicle ages, or if you start modifying it. Like mine has a dually adapter kit on it, and an aftermarket rear dif, and I have a 5 speed trans to throw in it. So the weight rating on the door tag really isn't super accurate.
