Special thanks to Mythic Legions Tactics for sponsoring this episode www.mythiclegionsgames.com I think the thought of selling and getting out of collecting is one that has crossed all of our minds, so I find this a fascinating topic to discuss. I hope you guys enjoy this one!

Regarding to sell a collection. Well, let's never loose grip and levitate and keep our feet on the ground, collection is just a hobby, but there are things more important and require priority in our lives. One person grew not collecting then decided to collect and evalueted again and decided to sell. He or She still the same person from the beginning but with more experience, knowledge, memories and wisdom.

When the stuff you own starts to own you, that's when you need to start thinking about trimming down. I sure went through the same process, still am, and Jason is right, at some point, it's more about the experiences than stuff. For me, I realized I had way more fun watching old cartoons than collecting lots of their toys. I don't obsess anymore about missing a toy, chasing this or that one, or stressing about them breaking, etc. We'll always have toys, just less, but the ones we'll keep will be really special to our hearts. Great video!

This was such a great video, for so many reasons. 1) The reminder that it's OK TO STOP! 2) The support of Jason's friends, family, and even the comment section with this difficult choice 3) Jason's amazing collection! I had to watch this a couple times before I noticed the She-Ra and BraveStarr animation cels, and the awesome Gargoyles collection! Thank you so much for making this important video, Dan, and best of luck in your next ventures, Jason!

"If buying everything makes you happy, then go for it" Yeah, sure; but keep in mind you'll eventually be overwhelmed & stricken with anxiety 😅 Just looking at Devall's collection gave me anxiety. I'll be redoubling my efforts to maintain a smaller collection, this was stressful to even just see in a video - good move Devall.

Great video on a topic we’ve all wrestled with! I’ve sold whole collections so many times over the years. Some I still regret, some I regretted so much I bought them all over again, and then others I don’t miss or even think about until I see them pop up in a toy video and think, “oh that’s cool I remember having those.” I totally agree you have to do what makes you happy, and like you said, just think it over and make sure you won’t have regrets. I know from experience how dumb it can feel buying something back for way more money just because you completely regret selling it in the first place. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I have a tiny, TINY fraction of this collection and I'm always debating getting rid of stuff so I can certainly relate to the anxiety. A lot of mine is in storage tubs, only occasionally getting seen or rotated into the display so at a certain point it's like, why am I buying more stuff essentially to store in a closet? I also feel like sometimes having a large collection maybe detracts from being able to focus on the more meaningful pieces. If I set out 40 Marvel Toy Biz, am I going to be able to focus on the childhood Iron Man figure I remember getting with my parents or am I going to just see a wall of figures? Anyway, great video! Really enjoyed it.

Alex, I know exactly how you feel as I have been debating that alot lately so many toys that are coming out but I only have so much room. And how many of them do I actually need. How many of them actually matter to me in the long run. It was so much easier when I was in my mid/late 20's then it is now in my early 40's.

I relate to this, greatly. So much so, that I literally started to part with a lot of my collection this past week. I have found the things I enjoy the most are the pieces I have direct connection to or memories. What’s the point of having a super rare toy if it just sits stored away? Or to keep it only becasue it’s rare. Doesn’t make sense to me or for me anymore. It’s cool to surround myself with the things I love, and I enjoy it. But it eventually becomes too much. And purging actually feels great…and helps the wallet and bank balance 😆

That guy is just such a “real” dude. Always loved listening to his podcasts and his thoughts. Got me through ALOT of crappy work hours. I am right now dealing with the same thing mentally. About to give it all up. What’s it all for? My mind won’t let me have just one or 2 of anything. I need to get it all when I “get in”. Best of luck man. And thanks for all you did!

It's great that you guys are talking about the mental health side of toy collecting! I've been thinking about my collection and how it affects my anxiety, and I had a lot of the same conversations, both internally and with my wife. Being more selective or smarter with my purchases (especially with rising retail prices) has helped. Taking the time to go through the collection and sell off the pieces that no longer bring the same joy will also do wonders for your mental health. I also created a catalog of my collection for my wife/family, so that if something happens to me there is a resource there for them to be able to sell it. These are great conversations to have in our community!

I recently decided to drastically scale back my comic book collecting (I’ve recently got into collecting three action figure lines). I think habit is such a huge part of a collecting mindset. My buying habits were not bringing me joy anymore. I realized that less is more when it comes to collecting sometimes. Trying to get everything can be exhausting and you don’t really get a chance to enjoy what you get when the next new thing comes right after that. Focus in a collection can be meditative.

Oh man. I love the conversation between you and Deval at the beginning of the video because I can really relate to what was being discussed there. Particularly on the point of making that decision to let go of your stuff and later regret it. The painful part is after youve sold it, now you want it more than ever! I remember this from one of the episodes of ' Figure it out' on the WWE channel featuring Zack Ryder ( Matt Cardona) and Curt Hawkins ( Brian Myers) where Matt said he once bought a SDCC Ninja Turtles exclusive and then sold it off to only buy another one much later because of how much he regretted his previous decision that he made. PS: It's a relief to hear that we still get to see more Jason Devall in Dan's future toy hunting videos. One thing I forgot to mention earlier was how much I enjoyed your two working together in your early days of youtubing , making toy shows such as 'That New Toy Smell' which I think till this day is one of the greatest and the most informative toy news shows in KZbin toy show history. That's how much I appreciate and feel for the show. All these years I was hoping to get a glimpse of Jason in Dan's videos after their work in That New Toy Smell ended.

I have to admit before I saw the collection I wondered how you could part with it. Then I saw the volume & breadth of what’s been collected and understood where Devall was coming from. I have to say over the years I’ve always purged & edited what I own and having just moved states there was stuff I gave away & even more stuff that has gone since I arrived. I really do feel that I’ve brought the collection down to only the things I love. I understand completely where Devall is coming from and when he has it down to what he loves most, I bet he’ll feel the weight of the anxiety lift from his shoulders. 🙏🏼

This was such a trip down memory lane. I saw so many lines I had parts of as a child that I had no clue about (I loved cool action figures, and still do, no matter the property). I had that Power Lords great creature vehicle. I remember it because the front leg/wheel assembly broke off of the one my brother and I had. I also remember the Potato Head Kids, so you aren't the only one. I have done occasional pruning of my collection over the years, as my tastes change or I shift focus. Otherwise most of it ends up in a storage unit (which is currently the case due to housing situation).

Reasons like this is why I’m just strictly a MOTU, Mythic Legions, and some pro wrestling or other random barbarian like figures. I’m already putting a halt to buying anymore origins figures but I already have the ones I want anyway. Still though I’m close to selling off some of my overflow while I just try to keep my collection down to one shelf being MOTU and Mythic Legions and the other being my wrestling and miscellaneous figures.

I had similar thoughts and actually downsized my collection. Even though I didn’t collect vintage toys I did collect Hot Toys. Those suckers are super expensive and super addicting. Especially being married I didn’t want to burden my supportive wife with so much stuff so I have 1 display cabinet that I keep a small collection of marvel hot toys in and this month for my birthday I’m buying the hot toys hulkbuster for on top of my cabinet and probably rest from collecting hot toys.

This happens to most of us collectors/toy hunters. First you get a massive high getting everything you remember from your childhood, then you focus on a few favorite lines and eventually you get a period where you barely get new stuff and begin selling some stuff.

This is dark. Its really I think an almost unconscious evolution of getting older. Like just 3 years ago we were all still totally passionate about all this, but as we get more and more and as we realize our kids ... many of them anyway, won't care about it the way we thought they would... it all just makes less sense in our lives. Its just turning into stuff... when we see it could be money used on different things. I bet anything that we are about to see mass sell-offs now.. because I'm thinking it too.

I've put some serious thought into selling half my collection to just focus on other types of things. I can relate kinda. For years I collected to have "one of everything" one of every star wars character was even a goal of mine for years. In recent years I realized I'd much rather have one to three REALLY good articulated figures from properties I like. So instead of 100 5-point articulation figures, instead do the hand full of $60 super articulated figures. His statement about the collecting the dust also has a huge influence on me too. I hate that I have a huge collection that is literally difficult to keep dust-free because there's so much, where if I had a few VERY important items, I could much more easily clean them. Display them with cool brinted backgrounds, instead of just a shelf of many things.

Very entertaining & insightful video. He had a lot of items I don't think I ever heard of, and some I did, but had little interest in; however (as was mentioned), alot of the stuff looks great when together. For the last couple of months, I've been getting items in beat up packaging (at discounted prices) to take out as I'm not a mint on card guy. But lower prices that allow for greater quantity can have this consequence at the end of the day. Moderation is a key component, something that we all might occassionally slip out of, but should always remember the benefit of contentment with what we've got and appreciate what matters most.

For me, it was comic book collecting. I started collecting in 1989, as I entered high school. At first it was just Batman; then Superman; then I discovered the whole DC Universe and the “crossover events”; then eventually it spread to Marvel, and so forth and so on. I was collecting so much, I seriously never even truly read most of the crap I had because I simply never had that kind of time. I would always “skim” through everything to get the gist of the story, but it became more of an obsession to have every tie-in, every important event, etc. Eventually I whittled it down to only picking up the stories I truly wanted to read, and even that began taking its toll. I must have had close to 30 long boxes full of 20+ years’ worth of comics, most of which were being stored high on a shelf in the shed where I used to live back in New York. I had contemplated selling the collection for many years, but every comic collector I would talk to would always say the same thing: they won’t be worth anything right now, wait another 20-30 years and then they’ll be worth something. But that wasn’t really a feasible option for me. Once my wife and I decided to make the move to Florida in 2019 to be closer to her family, I remember feeling huge anxiety and being overwhelmed by the amount of comics I had, and the thought of transporting all of that down here. So, minus a small number of comics I kept, I just donated the entire collection to a charitable organization, Materials for the Arts, and immediately felt a huge wave of relief. Sometimes I think about the comics I had, but it’s more of a fleeting thought. If it was important enough, I either kept it or had the trade collection. I’m glad I got rid of all of it because it was really just a huge burden that I no longer needed.

I started as a comic book guy as well, hardcore, with the Death of Superman. I got into the same problem. I was dropping over a hundred bucks a week on comics (this is in the 90's, mind you) and was accumulating a MASSIVE stock of books. I eventually sold over 4 thousand books in 2006 for about 18 cents a book JUST to get out from under most of them.

Man, this video really hits home. I buy stuff that makes me happy…but that’s also means I buy a lot of stuff. We just moved and packing the collection up was a horrible experience and it’s still not unpacked (maybe 50% unpacked) I have no room in the new house. I’ve been wanting to sell as well.

Dan, great video! Agree with everything and what a treat to see a lot of these obscure lines, so much fun....BUT.....I feel like you went through every single shelf, nearly, he's got this AMAZING 80s toy collection and I saw he had a lot of ThunderCats and I saw Centurions, did he have SilverHawks too...I kept seeing the shelves above, the shelves to the sides, the shelves below but it's like you LITERALLY skipped the ThunderCats collection!!! DAN!!!! I know it was a mistake, I'm just kidding, I loved seeing everything, so much I did not even know...existed, especially the big vehicles and playsets for some of the really obscure lines. I too especially loved seeing the Filmation Ghostbusters collection and I agree that playset is all kinds of extra. Very neat video, best of luck on the auction, (still a little salty about the skipped ThunderCats ;), not really

Its smart to cash out now. the bubble will burst and people of our age will die out and nobody will want are retro junk. 80s-90s era of toys and cartoons are the last days of saturday morning toons and we are all hitting 40 and 50. do we leave it to our kids who didn't grow up in our era? or just sell it for funds for our kids?

@Robert Anthony I agree with dough , when our generation is gone nobody is really gonna care about our g1 transformers , and if they do ,their gonna probably want the more detailed articulated stuff that's out now. As much as I hate to admitted I think it will happen.

Honestly, not a lot Action figure-wise is staying. Just some bits and pieces that mean something to me on a personal level.

Excellent video. Always interesting to hear about when people make this decision. But you skipped over showing the Disney Afternoon and Thundercats that we glimpsed next to some of the other things. Amazing collection though.

I've been collecting a long time and stuff comes and goes but I already know if I live long enough to be in a nursing home the only thing I'm bringing with me is the clock my father hand made me, it's the one thing I'm taking with me to the grave. Collecting is a fun hobby but it's good to keep things in check.

Dan, this is why your book about heman and other toy collection books are so great, you can have the entire collection in the palm of your hands for a fraction of the price and not take up an entire basement.

As a collector I've pondered selling my DC collection on an off over the years cause right now my focus is on collecting MOTU Origins, Revelations, Super7 ULTIMATES and a few NECA toy lines but I'm not selling my MOTU stuff EVER, too much sentimental value I'm passing that down to my family once I'm gone and they can sell it and enjoy the money

Yeah that collection definitely looks like it’s out of control. I think Jason just needs a reset really. Pick out five toy lines that you love the most and focus on those. I’ve got dibs on the food fighters if he has any 😅

This is too true. I've slimmed down to Transformers, Lightning Collection, funko which trimmed within to Masters of the Universe, One Piece, MHA and some random, GI Joe (Joevid got me), and then the Kamen Rider Figuarts. I may get into Ghostbusters Plasma if they do RGB and IDW ghosts in the line. As a kid I know I dabbled in many lines. Too many I think. 😅😅😅😅😅

AHHHHH the furry monster puppet from the "Board" show you guys used to do! What was his name, Little Devall? This year has by far been the worst ever for my little family. A car accident took me out of work for the past 7+ months and with not enough money to live on I've had to sell off a LOT of toys from my collection just to survive. I've still kept some stuff but slowly each line I owned is being liquidated to make room and keep my family fed. I think as collectors we have 3 phases of existence just like a Butterfly. Phase 1 is the 'Caterpillar Phase' where we consume as much as we can and grow and grow and grow. After that we often enter a period where we start to reevaluate how much stuff we have vs how much stuff we really want or need. That's when we enter Phase 2: the 'Pupa Phase'. After we have made all of our purges and have started to cultivate our collection down into something smaller, more manageable and more easily enjoyed, that's when we enter Phase 3: the 'Butterfly Phase' and become the better collector we really want to be. I know lots of collector friends who are still stuck in their Caterpillar Phase and that's rough because eventually you get SO big that you feel obese with stuff. I remember when you had to pack up your toy room Dan when you were moving and you documented the entire process, I know how overwhelming that feeling is. I've been dealing with that since February and I've sworn and kicked and cursed at my stuff because you get to a point where the joy from keeping it and moving it around doesn't exist anymore. You know that old saying, "You can't take it with you." well that applies to being a collector too. If you have SO MUCH stuff that in an emergency if you had to only grab 1 tote of stuff or a handful of toys, you wouldn't be able to take it all. And if that was a the case, why even have that much to begin with?

Puppet Devall is his name. And little known fact, he used to eat LEGO bricks on camera. Then we had a parent tell us her kid tried to eat LEGO's after seeing it, so now he eats cheese...lol!
