Huge congrats to him on making it happen 👏🏻 my favorite part of the episode though was like the 10 seconds of funko pop talk about how the market is crashing, and you turn away 400-500 a week. And how the landfill article is what you think triggered it. I would love to hear more discussion like that in future episodes where as a store owner you see certain trends on things new or old. How did character models happen without or before 3D printing
@andrewg5672
@andrewg5672 6 ай бұрын
the process is called injection molds. It is very expensive and needs metal casting skills, heavy machinery skills, and programming, usually done in a factory. You shape a prototype using plaster or resin, and can use a program called CNC to have a graphical representation of the toy/parts. Then you use a heavy milling machine that will carve out metal in the form of half the toy. This will be the mold. Another metal mold will be created to represent the other half. The two molds are pressed together, and then liquid plastics in injected in the mold to create the toy. People would then spray paint the toy as needed. As you can tell, this is an extremely expensive endeavor that requires a lot of investment, time, and care. Because of this, most toys are manufactured in china, as most heavy machinery and now robotic systems geared towards creation of small toys or electronics is not native to america or even europe for that matter. Obviously now this is slowly changing with 3D printing, and programming skills in even the youngest of classrooms!

Funko pop is such a waste off space and money. I never understood what people found collecting them. 3D prints are pretty fragile. As someone that makes props, I rarely use an original print as a prop. Only if it's display only. They should really make molds from the prints and cast them in ABS or another strong plastic. Just like the original toys. Then you could cast a few dozen quickly and cheaply and sell them at a much more reasonable price per piece.
@ZsH85
@ZsH85 10 ай бұрын
there are many types of resin. i also worked as a 3d guy in movie props and some resin are so hard you cant even brake them with hammer
@MichaelTotin
@MichaelTotin 10 ай бұрын
@@ZsH85 Given the size, I assumed FDM printing. If these are SLA, then yes, the resins can be pretty solid and hold up. Given they are more sensitive to high temps and UV compared to cast resins. Also you can control the time better. Cast resins cure in a range of time frames ranging from minutes to a few hours. Much faster than waiting on a print. Even SLA.

Good question but that depends on many factors such as how many he is going to produce of each figure. If it's super limited which I think is what he's going for then there will be No problem with copying the design entirely. If he intends to produce thousands (unlikely) then sure the Bigwigs would go after hum.

Yeah, these are nowhere as big as he originally made them out to be. Not different enough from the oversized Mattel ones to make these at all unique. Now if they’re doing oversized vehicles/playsets, or dinosaurs, that could be interesting. Or the M.A.S.K. line that he mentioned at the end! That’s what I want to see.

Yeah. Very likely an IP violation unless they have a license to duplicate and sell.

Yeah I hate them, goofy looking,not poseable, etc, that being said I have a few only because there just isn’t any other option out there for the title. I think they’re so popular because they’re cheap, easily accessible and they just have so many licenses you will probably find a figure for that off title that doesn’t make figures anywhere else.

Like he said, he's into the art style. Doesn't need to be a mega fan to buy and appreciate MOTU.

Dude he says he isn't a massive MOTU guy just loves the art style and design of it but he does actually know a fair few names etc for a casual fan
