I enjoy these videos. I don't have a 4Runner and probably won't. In the late 70's I had a 67 Landcruiser. The video quality of your latest offerings is probably the best of anyone's that I watch. This was outstanding and really professional. I have decided it must be a Regional thing -- I have always used the term " turn over" for "crank." I have noticed though that at least as many people use it to mean "start," as you did. I just need to think about the context, and make sure I understand which way they mean it. 'Til the next one......
@TimmyTheToolman5 жыл бұрын
Hey Dave, thanks for the nice compliment. We appreciate it! It's funny that you mentioned my word choice because I actually gave this some thought. You're right that the terms "turn over" or "crank" are used by people to mean the engine is starting, but what it really means is the engine cycles when you turn the ignition key letting you know the battery and starter are in working order and the engine isn't frozen.

My 22re engine has a problem starting. ONLY when its hott outside and its. Been sitting in the sun. If its cloudy and below 70 degrees it starts like a charm. If its sunny and above 70 degrees it wants to stumble. I have to hold the key to the start position abit longer and then it will start up everytime. If i forget and dont hold the key a lil longer it will die. And fire up when i give it gas the next time. So its like the opposite of alot of peoples problems. However after driving when its hott. I can turn off and start without any issues. Im thinking to much vapor in my gas tank maybe my charcoal canister is going bad. Still learning about working on my own vehicle. Timmy you have helped me more times then not ! I cant thank you enough for the info. Even if i have an issue that isnt the main issue your diagnosing in your videos. I always seem to learn more the more i watch! Im currently getting ready to do the valve cover gaskets in my 5vze and will be using your video. My 22re has some minor issues but i have been putting them on the back burner till i get my toyota t100 dialed in. Going to work on the 22re more afterwards. Ill be checking the ohms on my switches then! But i have a feeling my problem is fuel related. When its hott outside and it doesnt start when its hott. I get a smell of fuel. Almost like my engine is slightly flooded.

Can't seem to adjust it back to the right setting. Also any suggestions on the best shop manual for these old girls. Mine is an 85 efi with a turbo. Thanks in advance, -Joel
@TimmyTheToolman3 жыл бұрын
That thing with the spring is for the AC system. When you turn on the AC, your idle will kick up higher to compensate for the extra load on the engine when the AC clutch is engaged. That plastic adjuster with the spring underneath it allows you to adjust how much idle kicks up when you run the AC. That shouldn't have affected the running of your motor unless you were running the AC at the time. The best manual is the Toyota FSM. You can find them for sale on Ebay.

I’ve already replaced my fuel filter, fuel injectors, fuel pumps working good, and getting fuel to my fuel rail. Could this part go bad and make your engine not run?

The cold start switch is just for starting as far as I know. It has nothing to do with the engine performance after the engine starts.
@TheJadeWilk3 жыл бұрын
Hey I was hoping you could help me with a cold start issue I've been having on my 1986 4Runner. Basically it takes a little while of cranking in the morning before it will start. When the engine is warm, it will start just fine. So far I've replaced the following: fuel filter, cold start time switch, water temp switch, removed and cleaned the fuel injectors with new seals. I've used my multimeter to test the AFM, circuit opening relay, specs for cold start time switch and water temp switch. If I short the fuel pump check connector it still takes some time cranking before it will start. The way that I have found it will start with the first key turn every time when it's cold is this: short the fuel pump check connector, connect a fuel injector tester to the battery and send 3 short pulses to the cold start injector. This leads me to believe that fuel pressure is ok, fuel pump is working, cold start injector works. I'm thinking there is either an issue with the wiring from the thermo time switch to the ECU or wiring to the cold start injector. Any thoughts? (Sorry for the novel. I was trying to explain the best I could)
@TimmyTheToolman3 жыл бұрын
I honestly think you know more than me in regards to diagnosing this issue. I wish I could offer something more, but I don't have any suggestions for you. My cold starting issue is intermittent. Sometimes it starts as soon as I turn the key, other times it has to crank for quite a while. I have noticed that if the battery is cranking strong, it does start quicker, usually. I have been using a Ctek battery charger on my rig because I don't use it enough for the charging system to keep my battery strong.
@TheJadeWilk2 жыл бұрын
@@TimmyTheToolman Hey just wanted to update this since I hate it when people post problems but never come back and describe the resolution. Turns out it was my cold start time switch after all. I was getting voltage at the cold start injector harness during cranking. The only thing it wasn't getting was the ground signal which is sent from the cold start time switch. Using my multimeter everything on my cold start time switch was within spec, that's why I had originally ruled it out. Put a new one on and it's fired up first try every morning since. Hey man I have a 92 22re pickup just like yours and it has been a pain recently. It has only been starting up in warm weather so I assumed it was the cold start injector, after cleaning it and putting it back to check if it worked, it sprayed all over the cardboard after I turned the key for a quick second. Therefore I new that was not an issue, yet after putting everything back together, it wouldn’t start, only crank. I then checked the lower electrical connect with my ohms meter just like you did and I got 41 which I assume is plenty good. I am now at a loss for options regarding my cold start injector because I know that the electrical is working and I know that fuel is being squirted out. Any advice?

Had a ‘71VW Bus with dual Kadron carbs and before a ‘67 Ferrari Dino with 3 dual webers. I tuned them ALL by Ear with a short 1/2” tube. Call me old school but I prefer carbs to FI except my Triumph Speed Triple that I map out with my laptop.

@@redrhino4370 Well, I'm not sure what you're issue could be. I would say it could be possibly be an ignition problem but it starts fine when warm so that doesn't make sense. so did you burp the air out the coolant
@TimmyTheToolman4 ай бұрын
For this job, I don't think I bothered. Any air will work its way out to the radiator and reservoir. Every time I renewed the coolant and burped the system, more air always works its way out over the next few days. I saw evidence of this by the level in my reservoir dropping. I just top off the coolant in the reservoir a few days later and I'm good to go.

It could be the MAP sensor.

After I replaced the coolant temp sensor, I've had no issues with a cold start. It may very well been a combination of a problem with both the cold start injector switch and the coolant temp sensor.

It could be the coolant temp sensor on the front of the motor causing your issue. I think my cold start issue was both the cold start switch and the coolant temp sensor that communicates with the ECU. They are the two right next to each other on the front of the motor.

Hey Tim, I have installed the new water temperature sensor, and the truck is still having a hard time starting, after the engine had warned up and has been sitting for about 10 minutes, do you think that maybe the injector could have a little leak causing it to flood it itself out?
@TimmyTheToolman4 жыл бұрын
@@twotoneranger I don't know about that. Without an electrical pulse going to the injector, how would it flood? I've heard about this issue on other vehicles. Starts fine when cold and then it's a hard start once the engine is warm. Have you tried asking this question on T4R.org in the Classic section of the forum to see if anyone has any clues as to the cause? I'll do some research too and see what I can find as a possible cause.

Does anyone know what the tps voltage from the plug is supposed to be?
@TimmyTheToolman4 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming since it's a 12 volt system you should be getting 12 volts power at the plug. I don't think there's anything in the system that would step down the voltage. What are you trying to figure out? Could it be low battery voltage?
@TimmyTheToolman4 жыл бұрын
It wasn't for my situation. My battery was fine. A low battery could cause a vehicle engine to not to turn over and start but my engine was cranking strong.
@j4k3z4 жыл бұрын
@@TimmyTheToolman Right. I'm moreso asking because I feel like thats what might be my problem. My battery has spent a lot of time near dead lately and also cold startups, its almost like my starter is too powerful for how lazily the engine wants to crank over seems like the starter is skipping over or something and doesnt start the first time because I wont keep cranking it (pretty sure thats bad) but starts right up on the next crank.. idk much what technically is going on thats just my amateur interpretation and I figured low battery voltage (or whatever happens after killing the battery a handful of times) could be responsible.
@TimmyTheToolman4 жыл бұрын
@@j4k3z Yeah, maybe replace the battery and see if the problem resolves itself. It definitely sounds like your battery is weak but first make sure your battery connections are clean, corrosion free and tight. Bad connections can cause your issue as well.
