I had one of these. Bought it in great condition 121,000 miles 1.6 automatic 3 speed with a/c. $400 out of someone's front yard. They took the carb apart and couldn't put it back together so it sat for a while. They lost parts for it and I got a beautiful rebuilt from National Carburetors in Florida for $213. With the new carb it never smoked, idled great, and started and drove perfect. I think the original problem was the float disintegrated. Those engines run forever.

Those models almost had a cult following in South Africa, they were extremely reliable and long lasting engines but the rust got the bodywork.

I am be able to deal with Corolla at any age as long as it still in decent body shape. The engine of Toyota is very simple to rebuild and plenty of parts available at reasonable price. I have owned more than 5 corolla that I brought used condition and older than 23 years old.

I've had the exact same issues with the same motor as that. The vacuum system is a painful thing to get right and the master cylinder on mine was also toast. Great Jo getting it started 👍

I revived a crusty old 1985 Corolla once. It still HAD all the original vacuum lines on it but it wouldn't really run. I replaced every single vacuum hose one at a time so I didn't get confused . After that (and a carb rebuild) it ran perfectly!
