Enjoyed this video. Pretty much all of the negatives are as a result of it being an Icon.

Had a Corolla Touring Sport (Excel) 2.0l Hybrid from new and nearly 50,000 miles. Averaged 50mpg overall over the 4 years, with a high of 60mpg on one tank in hot weather and a low of 46mpg in the depths of winter. Highly recommended. Only dislike..the automatic headlights were a bit slow to dip at times.

I have a 2019 saloon version. Mine is a Hybrid and it does 60mpg. When the low fuel warning message comes on you can clear it with the 'return' button on the steering wheel. I didn't they did a manual (wouldn't want one though}

Usually the features that you cannot permanently turn off is to comply with whatever accreditation. Like the annoying roadside 'assistance' that reads speed limit signs and beeps at you incessantly when you exceed what it thinks is the speed limit, which works half the time a quarter of the time. Safety features, like the Lane Keeping Assist that tug at the steering wheel, that I cannot disable permanently. Or emissions (stop starts are rarely allowed to be turned off completely, in any car). Modern cars, hey. I have a Corolla TS 2023, hybrid 2.0L, mid-range trim. Yes, it's very dark inside, and the car is 'soporific', in that it's very relaxed, and not really geared towards performance, even the 2.0L 193 bhp version. Otherwise, it's great car, fuel consumption is around 4L in city, 4.5L country roads, 5L highway, 6L motorway. Only one USB port (come on Toyota, it's 2024).

Great, positive overview of a good, practical, no-nonsense car. Equipped with sensible, non too intrusive safety aids, it still retains some semblance of how cars used to be. That is, a manual gearbox and a 'normal engine' instead of a hybrid system coupled to CVT trash. Ugh!🤢 Good review.

For the last 2 years I’ve been fantasizing about which retirement car to buy, in a few years time. There’s only 2 choices - you’ll think I’m mad - Mazda MX5 or Corolla GR sport (not the GR Corolla). Two seemingly incomparable cars. But not when you consider my requirements I’m insisting on (1) Japanese engineering (2) great looking (3) ultra reliable (4) brisk performance. The MX5 will give me the simplicity I crave, plus huge smiles. The GR Sport will feel like a Rolls Royce by comparison and will slip into my life seamlessly, and will be every car I ever need. You have both cars! (Well, almost, your Corolla is the Icon). So what do you reckon Neil?

No contest, MX5. I’ve always promised myself a Caterham and that’ll be my retirement present. Head will say get something sensible like a 5 series but when I get to that point in life the heart will be making the decisions. Just make sure you get it undersealed from day 1 and you love every minute of driving it and every day of owning it. We don’t plan to sell ours.

@@midlifemotors5050Well I’m delighted you liked my wee Roy Buchanan impression 🤣👍. And cheers for the reply on the retirement car….. Yeah, I’m gonna let the heart decide, so MX5! Hope you get your Caterham when the time is right. Cheers 🍻

Acceptable as an alternative to the Astra and Focus, but a manual petrol 1.2 Corolla estates are hen teeth stuff. Some earlier Auris badged model are slightly easier to find. I drove a hutch version as a loan car when my Avensis was serviced and liked it. My Avensis 1.8 Tourer manual is also 1.4 tonnes (but bigger) and has a similar comfort level. Still, at 289,000 miles, I am looking for a suitable and similar Toyota rig, i.e. none, hybrid, manual estate. To say it's hard to find is an understatement. 😮

I have the new 5th generation hybrid Corolla touring sports and the fuel economy is excellent excellent averages 70 mpg in normal mode have achieved 85 mpg on several occasions and the new hybrid system is much better on responsiveness less noise and more torque, the design trim is the one to go for better alloys and better tech and not much more than the icon, overall an excellent car the ride and the steering is great

I hear the cvt in the gen5 is much improved. Need to try one because the earlier generations were not for me tbh, too slow and noisy. I quite like a bobbybasic model as my daily, always have for some reason 🤔 It is an excellent car though, even in icon trim

Isn't it only a 10yr warranty if you get it serviced with a Toyota dealer?

100% correct. 5 years then 5 more if you use Toyota service centres. Gets a bit pricey sticking with them though

The 6 speed manual is much nicer than the hybrid on the highway. The premium interior is much improved in terms of color and lumbar support too. This is based on time in a fleet grade hybrid and owning the highest grade of non gr manual.

toyota needs to stop doing the turbo engines and bring back the naturally aspirated engines, i can't stand the bloody "save the environment" crap that is forcing toyota to make tiny engines for massive cars, a 1.2 is perfect for a supermini tiny size yaris, it's ridiculous how toyota has no common sense, because the smaller the engine, the more strain on the engine, when it comes to it being a mid size saloon or an estate, toyota's most reliable engine is their V6, and im seriously considering looking into buying corolla saloon from ireland, because i checked the insurance and tax for that is very cheap, but i am completely lost on how can i buy a car from ireland and import it to the uk, i have no idea how that works, or a japanese import or either buy a lexus with a big engine V6 from here in the u.k, down side to that is paying an arm and leg for roadtax and insurance
@midlifemotors5050
@midlifemotors5050 4 ай бұрын
The 1.2 is a peach of an engine, don’t underestimate it. A big V6 may sound great but all that weight upfront is only going to unbalance the car, make it understeer and probably ruin a perfectly smooth drive. I’m with you on big NAs, got one in the garage, but not as a daily driver, not for me anyway

Even Toyota's new hybrids will be downsized turbos. The DynamicForce engines are their last NA engines. I think 2026, something like that.
